You should be fine without. Just lube/grease well on the bearings and the aluminum seat.

One of my friends had the DropZone Coils for his Cavlaier and he had these extra "plastic" type spacers that I used.

If you can fabricate one for yourself so that spring won't bind when turning that would be great. If not, just grease it well and it should work fine.

Question, why not just weld the sleeve to the strut and not worry about it?

Because that doesn't help the spring any. The top perch and the bottom perch need to be able to move independently. Ground control relies on the stock bearing to do this but this solution obviously doesn't work. The bearings actually solve two problems in one. They allow the top and bottom perches to move independently and they prevent the spring from binding in compression. All coil springs twist as they compress and this can cause inconsistent handling or popping noises in compression.

You won't suffer any damage without the bearings, but your coilovers will likely pop when you turn at low speed (high steering angles). There are other solutions to this problem, but this is the best one that I've found.
