I recently had a new exhaust system put in from the cat back. I mentioned it before about how the guy told me that the cat was connected to the header, and someone said that we have two (one connected and another regular one). So, I have'nt put it up on a lift yet to check it out, but thought that he may have just taken the second out.
The problem is when the engine is cold and I start it up, the first couple times I hit the gas I hear this sound coming out of the back that is wierd. Its kind of a crackling, clicking sound. Hard to describe, but maybe something like the sound a stun gun would make. It goes away after a couple revs, and only happens after the engine is cold. It dosen't seem to effect the performance at all when it does it. Any ideas what this might be? -------------------- ![]() |

it might just be the metal heating up..expanding ..

It's pretty normal. As catalytic converters get older... they take slightly longer to heat up and start working. The clicks are probably just your cats taking their time to heat up, along with various other metal parts which tend to creak and click as they get older (metal expands with heat). Pretty normal stuff. Mine clicks constantly... but that's from the glasspack... ;] And yes... both versions GT and ST have 2 cats... one pre-cat in the header and another down lower under the car. ok, not to hijack your thread, but when i get a custom exhaust do i leave the cats or get rid of them or what?? I have no idea... Let me know what you think is best and your setup, thanks

if you remove your cats. then you will have better exhaust flow, but you will not pass smog.
what most people do is have a custom exhaust all the way up to the cats back, and then have an exhaust shop make them a test pipe. what a test pipe is is a pipe that connects from the header to the cat back exhaust allowing you to run your car without the cats. And when its time for an smog check, you remove the test pipe and install your cats back on to your car. But driving a car without the cats are illegal, so some people gut our there cats so it has better flow, and have the appearence of having cats. but you will not pass smog with this approach.. Its up to you whether you want to have the cats in your system. |

Haha screw cats...all I have is a straight 2.5" piping from the downpipe to the exhaust...flow sweetness. Comes inspection time...all I give is $11 and I'm done. It's good to have hook-ups and make friends with people.

Several people I trust at Toyota and other mechanics in the know have told me not to take the cats out until you go turbo. Our engines actually require a certain backflow pressure to function properly. I definetly felt what they were talking about on my previous '95 GT - it actually seemed more sluggish and had a bad effect on the valves or lifters or something - increased tapping sound coming from the valve cover area. I'm not a mechanic so I can't prove any of this I just know what I felt.
