Ive read lots of threads on these forums about the tein lowering springs and it sounds like everyone is happy with them, Ive also read that the tein springs + kyb combination is pretty popular, but I dont exactly know what kyb products I need for this setup, can somebody help me out?

Sorry latin... thats a little wrong. Basically, shock to my knowledge is a one way absorber. A strut is a two-way thus controling the vehicle better than a shock. Shocks a still primarily used in the trucks. Next time you see one, look by the rear tire. Its a post just like the lifts on the Celica hatchback. Shocks are separate from the spring and normally beside them. A strut is combined with the spring into an assembly. Now a coilover is a spring thats adjustable. Easy on that one.

Here is a nice article.

Yes... Celicas have struts all the way around. You would have to replace all of them if you were upgrading. The front should be the same. The rear will be independant. Meaning it'll look like this in an order:

Front x 2 - model #123456789
Rear Left - model #987654321
Rear Right - model #1234554321

just for you non-street smart people - those are not real model numbers

If the KYB's are just OEM replacements, why get em? If you want stock, your car came with it.

Go Koni Yellow. Koni's 8-way adjustable struts will own ANY kyb.

Some of us dont need Rally quality struts. I just need something that'll last through my drop and everyday driving. I know that my current stock struts couldn't handle it and the KYB's are a perfect match. KYB = 200. Koni = 600 and then need custom work as I've heard. I dont rally cross so I'll be fine with stock struts for my pavement battling Celica.

You're stock shocks will handle the drop. I'm riding on a 1.75 (tom's springs) drop for some time now. But I will buy Koni's once I get a few more bucks.

And you don't have to rally to appreicate Koni's. You can soften up the ride so you ride like a Lexus and your girlfriend stops bitching. (I've always been a fan of just smacking her and telling to shutup, but whatever works) Or you can stiffen em up to go have a spirted drive on curve roads.

I just feel like, if OEM toyota struts and KYBs are the same, why shell out extra money just for the name?

In the UK the KYB's a lot of people go for (me included) are called ExleG's and they're uprated 20% from the stock ones. The difference as far as I know is that the stock Celica ones are a gas and oil shock but the ExleG's are just gas.

Are GR2's the same as ExleG but just for the U.S. market?

I changed mine. Only bcus I tried taking them out when I installed my GC's before, seemed pretty worn through time. Not to mention the winter weather here. There's that risk of stripping that Allen head so be aware. I'd recommend changing them.

I got mine for about $50 each. Did some research on them and that's pretty much how much you'd be spending for them.

I got them from www.partsamerica.com. Part number for them is TRW 18087.
Do a search on your vehicle and the swaybar links, mounts, etc. is under the Chassis category. smile.gif

I believe there's also www.rockauto.com also.

If you want to save cost on the intallation, I suggest you do your rears. Taking out the rear link is a snap if you're going to end up replacing them. All you have to do is remove the 1 hex head that's attached to the frame and you don't need to worry about the other one .

The fronts gave me problems. There were 4 of us trying to unscrew the thing and it just wouldn't give. We took it to our friends friends shop and he torched the shock for me and installed the cartridges. Only charged $25 for both of them.

user posted image

He said that he thinks Toyota sealed the shock housing with some sealant to prevent leaks, so that's why it was hard to unscrew.

My tom's springs are alright. I have 2 rear blown shocks, so I'm sure it feels wrong. But when push the car side to side, it's really stiff. So they're decent, they haven't truely impressed me a lot yet.

Ok heres an update, Tein S springs get to my house on the 13th, KYB GR2's all around get here the week after. I got the list of parts that need to be replaced and they are the front strut mounts and front cv shafts (axles). I ran into a little bit of luck, my friend works at tires plus and can work on my car for free so all labor is $0 smile.gif I still want to get new sway bars just to make sure everything is new and in good condition. So almost $1000 goes down to about $310 with a little help from friends and a little more research. Is there anything else you all recommed I get?

no they're 2 different parts. Ones longer than the other. I believe the rears are.

Every time I goto a shop they tell me they cannot find rear sway bar links. I went to partsamerica.com and clicked on rear sway bar links, and they have the same number and the front sway bar links, thats why I was thinking maybe they are the same thing on front and back.

Bojangles, partsamerica will ship you the right ones, i notified them of that error on them, when i spoke to a rep. I made sure that they sent me the rears and they did. TRUST...it's legit. smile.gif

In the site they list them as the same PN#'s. They messed up when entering it into their system. The fronts are shorter than the rears. I believe the PN for the rear IS supposed to be TRW18087, the fronts are supposed to be TRW18086. Or vice versa. I have all the info at home.
The Rep. told me this when I spoke to them, but I only needed rears.

When you call them ask and verify this. They should send you a different front and a rear. Tell them that the part numbers are wrong and to verify that they're sending you the right ones.

Good luck.

well we have struts all the way around but for the front u only need to replace the cartilage but the back its better to replace the entire strut i think because it takes on the most beatiings when u drive

Well we got everything on today, but, I was driving up a driveway and the smaller axle broke in half. We went and got another one for free because we thought that the one that broke was a defect, we put it in, and it broke in half too, so my car to be towed to tires plus so they can find out whats wrong. Ill update tomorrow when I go pick it up

They might already know what the problem is. haha I guess I shouldve said this before but here is the possible problem:

we had to take the axle(s) to a shop so they could take something off the old axle and press it onto the new one (they said something about a peice that bolts to the frame) and in the process of doing that they couldve pulled the cv joint or whatever out of place, which is the gears or whatever that connect the axles. so when i tried to drive the car those gears that were already disconnected just got tossed around and tore up everything. if they determine that that is the problem, than i am gonna have the shop that did that pay for it.
