Alright, I'm irritated. This is the second sub I've gone through, the exact same kind as my last one to. I was just driving down the road listening to Lloyd Banks-on Fire and all of a sudden the base dissapears. Now, when I stopped the car, I checked the amp, and the amp was still on so obviously my sub blew or over heated. I highly doubt the sub blew because that sub can take quite a beating and is pretty Powerful. It's a MTX Thunder 8000 12". IF someone knows more about it and disagrees, please lemme know so I can beat someone up.

How many watts are you sending to the 8000? What size of an enclosure is the sub in, and are there any air leaks?

I blew my MTX yesterday, i know it was my fault though its rated for 100 rms and 200 max and i was running 170 rms to in constantly. I got a polk MOMO 12 for free but now i have to find a new amp because the 170 rms can barely get it to anything.

Last time this happened I checked my ground and it was good. But I'll check it again for sure. The enclosure is just a sub zero 12" box. Only air leaks I could think of is like a screw hole in it. Box is sealed up pretty well. and it can run 1000 watts is what the box says and what the guy who sold it to me said (even though he said could run 1500 easy) But I'm not sure what the rms is. But I know the Amp is a 1000 watt that rms's at...umm....damn, can't think of it. I think it was like 680-700 which is around what I was told I would need to run this sub and I mean, the sub thumped too man. Even ask Clipsetuner, it sounded like it was well powered, but I could be wrong.

So you're sure it's not your amp going into protection mode? Maybe try hooking up another sub from a friend or something just to see if it works.

my subs stop workin once in awhile too, but i know the ground isnt really secure. I gotta relocate the ground wire elsewhere when i get time...Either that or is ur amp overheating?

Can't setting your gain too high eventually make your amp or sub blow? I'm not quite sure, but that sounds like its bad. |

What kind of amp have you got? I blew a MTX RT251D a while ago and the LED on it still powered up - and the fuses were ok, but the output signal was gone. It might be your amp.
Also check to make sure that the ground on your amp is at least as good as the one on your deck, or else your amp will send a charge back down your RCA cable into your deck and ground through there. A cheap multimeter is important to check your signals. Edit - setting too high a gain won't blow your amp.. Maybe the sub but it's unlikely. I don't see how air leaks in the sub-enclosure could have anything to do with it either Coom. This post has been edited by KAMiX: Jun 30, 2004 - 9:19 PM |

Several possibilities here. I've experienced a ton of probs w/ this in mine and my friends systems.
1. Amp is overheating or going into safe mode 2. Loose ground or grounded to a bad surface, such as painted or nonconductive surface 3. Loose speaker wire. (check connection @ amp, contacts on box(inside and out), and contacts on the sub itself. 4. Blown sub- to know if its blown just take the sub out and see if you see any cracks in the coil or broken wires. You could also hook up the sub to a system that you know is working and if it plays ok then its not blown. 5. Bad RCA wires/Jacks-check for secure connections @ headunit and @ amp. 6. Headunit itself could have a problem, doubtful, but the outputs could be messed up due to a broken wire. |

I had the same exact problem with my MTX 8000 series too...Weird...My buddy who's all into electrical enigneering put a piece of wire on the amp connecting the power and i believe the umm...i forgot...but the smaller wires from the amp to the box...instantly my sub started thumpin and my antenna went up...im not exactly sure where that second location was but ill check...im pretty sure ur having the same problem as i am..its something with bad connections...100% its not the ground...

Sorry, I've missed a lot of stuff. As far as the amp going into safe mode, that could be possible because I had two of the exact same sub because I was gonna run both, but then decided to just run one and keep the other as back up. Well, this exact same thing happened with the original and so I used the back up and now the back up just stopped working and so now I am bemused as to whether or not I have two bad subs, or what. I thought my amp may be overheating but it's working fine is the wierd thing. I made sure it was turning on and everything. I still need to take a look at the speaker wires, but I'm sure I put those in really tight and made sure they wouldn't come loose, but you never know. I'll try taking the subs to a car audio place and have them tested. Irritated as all hell though, and my damn carpet won't stay put no matter what I do, it always eventually comes up and slides my sub around. Subs not bolted, but the carpet has some interesting set up I made to try and keep it (which obviously isn't working). Sorry, had to vent a bit. But yea, VangSTa, if you could figure out what he did, that would be awesome man, see if it works for me. As far as the ground goes, that things in real well. I'll go back through and double check when I get off work and get back to the topic.

Its actually not my opinion, as I've never dealt with an MTX sub (except for hearing them and not being impressed). It's just the general consensus I ran into on the net when I was researching for my subs. People would say: Whatever you get, dont buy sony or MTX etc etc... so.. I dunno.

I agree that sony and mtx subs are not very good along with a few other brands. Sony headunits, on the other hand, are some of the best in my opinion. The main things to look at when buying subs are magnet size, RMS and max power rating, durability-like the thickness and toughness of the materials, etc, etc, etc.

And then research street knowledge. Do the subs handle rated RMS? (In the case of Sony, none of their products do rated RMS, you'll blow them), do they last long? In the case of my JLs, everything is supposidely perfect, except that sometimes they won't last very long- but if they're faulty like that, they blow within the HUGE warrenty period JL offers.. so.. *shrug*

I am very happy with my MTX gear. Sounded by far the best out of all the gear at the shop and it seriously pumps. Really I think you guys are talking a bit of BS about their quality unless you are aiming at putting your car in audio shows.
All their products carry a lifetime warantee as well, so even if you blow an amp, or drop a sub you can send it back and they will repair it. My amp got both its motherboards and all LEDS etc replaced and sent back within 2 weeks. |

Mine use to do that all the time, its usualy a connection somewhere, check everything, with mine it would die even when it was still conected, sometimes its just not a strongenogh connection that makes the amp shut off, check your sterio output to, makesure its getting the signal to turn on, and that its connnected right. other then that try a diff sub/ or amp etc. they can just die like that.
