I just put in Motegi 17' MR7 Rims. They look great and makes the car look nice. but they expose the disc brakes and the rear drums. The rear drums are rusted from bad maintenace of the previous owner. Any ways i wanted to knoe if its safe to paint the rear drum and what is a good paint to use.

Make sure you clean everything as best as you can otherwise you will risk rust coming off and having spots in your paint job.

just spray the front, spray the back of them and you run into trouble.

IMHO painted drum brakes look good, but since they are drum brakes, personally, I wouldn't want to draw attention to them... I would just be worried someone might laugh. but like I said just MHO

I have mine painted and haven't had any problems. I need to go back and touch them up because I chipped them when I was taking out my struts.

Thanks for the replys' I dont really want to draw attention to them but i dont want them to look rusty either. so black or maybe even blue will do.
some one suggested whit to match the rims.

sliver metallic looks best... just something to make them look clean and not draw attention at all, black is the other best bet

I would just powder coat them... will last alot longer... dont have to worry about rust and you should be able to get them done for around 25 a rotor... at least thats what is costing me for my brembo ones.. but there just doing the center hub so it would be a little more to get the whole brake done.. but like K2 said DONT do the back side

Whats wrong with drums that you wouldn't want to attract attention to them? IMO they look better than the front.

do a search for powdercoating and your area on google.

QUOTE: Whats wrong with drums that you wouldn't want to attract attention to them? IMO they look better than the front.

the reason for not attracting attention to them is because drums are econobrakes. not made for performance at all. have you ever driven a car with front and rear drums? unfortunatly alot of older cars came like this, they tend to not like to stop too well.

biggrin.gif Well i just painted them today and i think i did a good job on them. The final color i chose was chevy blue with 500 degree resistance. This was the only color closes to my sea-spray car color. I post pics soon.

Paining them looks great. IO have a black car and I sanded off the rust with fine sandpaper and then spray painted them black. Looks great with my 16 GTS rims. Much better than the rusty crap before i painted them

KiLis-Can't wait to see the turn out on your drums. How long did it take you? 2hrs tops?

I'm planning on doing mine this spring/summer when the weather prevails. Prolly go look for something metallic color. I just want to keep it simple...not too much color for me.

Is sanding them down hard? Or does it just depend on how rusted they are?

Does anyone else have pics they can post so we can see how your drums turned out?
