I need help!! I've been doing searches all afternoon, and I'm not getting anywhere here! I need to know from someone who has swapped a 3SGTE into an ST if they have a complete part list from their swap! Also the clip i am buying is a MR2T rear clip with the LSD transmission.
So far I have: 4 brand new GT motor mounts (all of these will work, right??) Front Mount Intercooler I'm looking for: 88-91 V6 Camry outer halfshafts (for the MR2T transmission) GT Throttle Linkage Can anyone please tell me what other parts I need? I have asked around and people are giving me mixed answers, saying "yes you need this part" and "I dont know where you heard that, but you don't need this part" and blah blah blah. Can someone please help me out? I really appreciate it.. Thanks, Yota This post has been edited by Yota: Sep 23, 2004 - 5:48 PM -------------------- ![]() |

If you're gonna be working with an MR2 clip, you're gonna need shift linkages, accessory brackets and motor mount brackets (I believe it's slightly different in the MR2) and probably other little things. I believe there is a bit of custom work involved with mounting an MR2 tranny because of the mount... -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

Then whats the amount of work involved in an ST185 Celica versus the MR2T?

getting an mr2 clip sounds like a good idea in theory, but is more work in the end. ive never worked on an mr2 3s, but i know there are a few things that are not mounted the same way as the st185. the altinator is on the back of the motor insted of the front, the dipstick has to be modified, possible the power steering and the timing belft cover too.. i really dont know all the little details, but i can tell you that its going to make for a harder swap, especially since you dont have a spare 5sfe or 3sgte to take little parts from (brackets, mounts, etc).

true, well those reasons have made me think otherwise about the MR2T. If I went for the 5GC, what parts would I need?

Yota:
I have to agree with Lagos on the difficulty of the MR2 swap. There are a number of spare parts you will need including the mounts and the alternator bracket for the 5th gen altrac. I searched a long time for that part before I gave up. I believe my mechanic either modified my 5sfe bracket or fabricated one for me. I never did confirm it with him. The tranny mounts in particular involved actual fabrication by my mechanic. Also, I have heard (but have not confirmed) that the wiring is a different and possibly a little more complex. I wish I could help more. J-
Was your reply regarding the MR2T? Or did the modifications to the brackets and mount have to be for the All-Trac? -------------------- ![]() |

he was talking about the mr2t engine.
for the st185, your really dont have to do much. the hardest part is going to be drilling new holes for the passangers side motor mount, since you have an ST. you aslo have to decide if you are going to extend your harness or not. for mine, i cut a new hole in the firewall. its something you can only do with the engine out. which would you recommend? And for the ST185, what parts do I need beside the mounts?
I can still you the MR2T transmission, right? -------------------- ![]() |

you mean cutting or extending? well, cutting is the getto way, but extending is more risky and more work. if you extend the harness, you have to modify every wire that goes into the interrio/ecu of the car. if you mess one of those wire up, you could have major problems that will be almost impossible to track down. if you cut your firewall, then you only have to modify parts of your harness. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

What are you achieving by cutting through your firewall? Is it to "cut corners" so the wires will reach to where they need to go?
Is that the safer way? edit: Is this what they mean by "doing your wiring harness"? This post has been edited by Yota: Sep 23, 2004 - 9:03 PM -------------------- ![]() |

hehehe, you need to do more reasearch on wiring.
your harness has to be converted. this is also why you should get an st185 clip. no one here knows how to convert an mr2 harness. since the harness comes out of a RHD car, it will be too short to fit through the stock hole. you have to extend it or creat a direct path to the ecu by cutting the firewall. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

What do you mean by converting? Is it just a matter of getting them to reach?

The harnesses are very sensitive. You can't just twist and pull them into "fitting" locations. They should be cut, lengthened or shortened, to match the original factory ones... -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

remember, the search function is not working 100% right now, if you cant find what you are looking for use + before each word as an example:

It has always been my understanding that the MR2t 3sgte is slightly smaller than the 185 (accessorys not block etc), with the execption of the intercooler piping. The alternator braket should be the only major change and you should be able to use the 5sfe one.. I will check that for you this weekend yota.. hell get some good photos of the MR2t and bring them by and we'll compare with my 3sgte on the physical differences.
as for lengthening the harness.. thats pretty easy to do... just make sure you do one wire at a time instead of hacking the whole thing and then trying to lengthen it. also I would once agian suggest to you to get the MR2t clip and run a 185 harness on it. I know you can do that with little or no modifications.. theres a guy locally that if I ever get his number agian I'll have him talk to you that had an electrical fire on his MR2t and used a 5th gen alltrac harness to fix it.. think it took him a day or two to get the harness in and working, granted there would be a few changes for the 6gc but still think that would be your best route -------------------- ![]() 99 project version 3.0.. hello SEMA 2010 =) |

i dont think any of the accessories are "smaller" its my understanding they are just mounted more compactly.

Never,
Would you still recommend the MR2T motor? -------------------- ![]() |

So if I was using the MR2T 3sgte, I should get the ST185 ecu, and accessory brackets. along with motor mount brackets.
If I got the ST185 clip, would all these accessory brackets and motor mount brackets be in the clip? And now what shift linkages and throttle linkages? would I still need these? What year V6 camry do i need to get the outer half shafts for the hybrid axles? -------------------- ![]() |

i have my alternator mounted in the front because i have a st185 motor. But can someone post a pic of the alternator mounted in the rear of the engine for the MR2. I'm just curious where and how it's mounted.
Thanks. |
