Does your car have a turbo?Because it could be your seals going. But either way it sounds like oil!

white smoke is coolant burning. the valve stem seals would emit a blue smoke since there is oil on the seals.

White smoke is rarely a problem, black and blue possibly. White smoke in only the mornings is usually moisture build up from the car sitting over night with the morning dew, much of the same that happens to your windows over night.
More likely then not, its nothing to worry about. |

Its most likely condensation, IE why its only in the mornings where EVERYONES car does this in the mornings. Did it do this in the summer? -------------------- |

Sounds like you do. You can do a compression test and see if 1 or 2 are below normal, and you can also check your oil next time you change it. If it is milky, then your leaking coolant, most likely a blown head gasket. If the coolant gets mixed in with the oil... well you can imagine what it can do to your internals. When you do get it replaced, make sure you know why it blew in the first place, and address it so it doesnt happen again. Many times if your engine overheats, the head will warp, and cause the gasket to blow. So if you replace the gasket, take the head to a machine shop and make sure it is totally flat. -------------------- ![]() |

A blown head gasket would be alot more noticeable than some smoke.

Yeah I don't think it is any thing to worry about about. My car does it in the morning and I see it coming from all the other cars too.

i get smoke everytime i start the car regardless of the temperature. but when i start driving it, the smoke clears.
i think i've got big problems....i was told that it won't pass smog... how much does it usually cost to replace the head gasket? what's a fair price on a rebuild kit? thanks in advance. |

Blue is Oil, Usually from bad piston rings, bad piston, or cracked block (Most Expensive to Fix)
White - Gray is usually anti-freeze, usually from a bad headgasket, and sometimes with a cracked block. (Less Expensive to fix) Black is fuel, if you spew black, your running too rich, Not gunna mess your engine up. (Little Expense to tune out) Sometimes when its cold out, it is just condensation Blue is kinda a whitish blue color, but definately should be able to tell. If you smoke white smoke all the time, no matter what, you have an antifreeze leak, you can also tell because your antifreeze has most likely mixed with your oil, and turned it into a sludgy gray color. Those are all teh colors you engine should put out, unless someone put some green dye in there somewhere. |

Headgaskets are time consuming and expensive, its about a 6+ Hour Job (Mitchell Time Book) That means it will most likely be around $500-600 Labor +-100, +200 +-50 for parts. Have you actually tested your smog at a MVA or DMV Test site, just because it smokes in the morning doesnt mean it wont pass smog tests. |

dude head down to your local NAPA and head to the oil and fuel additives, and find the stuff that guarantees you will pass a SMOG test. Probably can't do much harm, and if you are financially strapped it might buy some time.

white in the mornings is nearly always condensation in the exhaust, nothing to worry about at all unless you have 'cream' around your oil cap as well.
if you have a big jap exhaust they are ven more prone to the build up of water condensation in the winter, hence the white smoke |
