what kind of things do you like? History? Grand monuments of nature? simple fun stuff that only locals know?

Willing to fly? or just within a weekend driving distance?

Me, i like grand displays of history... something that can tell a story just by looking at it and you can feel all the history locked inside jsut by being there. So now that im finally on the west coast, i want to drive down to McMinnville, OR to see the largest plane ever constructed... The Spruce Goose!

But thats the nerd in me, i know its not everyones idea of a cool trip.

History lesson: The Spruce Goose! was probibly one of the best worst planes ever, it was very cool and the biggest, but only actualy flew for like 30 sec, its cable/pully system that controled the flaps, ruters, etc maid it all but imposible to operate.

Australia is one of the places I have to see befor i die, (I wana go down under smile.gif

Engineering lesson: All planes, esp those back in the 1930s, basically use mechanical cable/pulley systems to manuever its control surfaces. Only in the past decade have planes been created with fly-by wire systems. There are some pretty lengthy equations that describe the correct control system feedback for cable driven flight controls. They are very scalable and was not the reason why the goose did not succeed.

History Lesson: The Spruce Goose was an insane project by the ecentric Howard Hughes. But it is marvel of ingeneous engineering. It was created to make trans-atlantic flights to aid in suppling the allied forces during WW2. But the war ended during its design phase. Only one was made. By the time that one was built, it had already sucked up so much money that congress forced Hughes to conceed. During a taxi test it which it was suppose to just be moved, Huges realized this would be the only oppurtunity he would have to ever see it fly. So he ignored tower orders and put her at full throttle. She lifted off the water surface and flew for about a mile. It didnt matter how long it flew. The point was that all the critics that said an aircraft that size couldnt fly were shut up. It proved that the same thoeries that made a toy airplane fly could be scaled to make anything, any size fly, there were no limits.

Its all good. I know that nobody does care except me. I love aviation and space history stuff because thats my field, i dont expect others to care.

And if you are going out of the country, Italy was a blast last time i went! Staying in the country, you should throw a dart on a map and go. The best trips are the ones that you find, not plan out. There is SO much in this country to see and do. Anywhere you go, youll find something.
