I'm going to do a tune up on the car. I'm getting plugs, wires, air filter, and fuel filter. What kind of plugs/wires do you all recomend? More than likely I'm going with bosch platinum 4's again. Same with the wires, bosch. Unless anyone can tell me why I shouldn't. I've done some research, I just thought it might be nice to know what people on here think. Thank's.

What I've heard about the platinum pugs is that they work great till the platinum burns off, then they don't work so well. As for air filter, I was already set on k&n, unless I can get up the cash for a apexi. Anyone else heard this with the pugs? It's not really a big deal right now, these things aren't going to gain that much hp anyway. They'll all get me the tune up I need. Well, just about.

Yeah. toyota wires are more than fine for any mild tuning. Just use OEM wires unless your using some kind of forced induction.

So, just putting new OEM's would be the best for me? I am just at mild mods. Is it that they don't change them because they don't haft to? or is it because they just work better? The way you guys said it, it was because they work better. I'm all about putting the best of the best on my car. I've always been that way, and money isn't really the big of an issue. I'm just about broke, but I'd rather be broke with the best on my car, than have a cuple extra bucks and something I knew wasn't the best.

YES...Use OEM Wires and Plugs if you can...Autozone/advanced wires are super crappy and the boots sometimes will pull off and get stuck down in the plug hole. Bosch spark plugs are crrap!!! Toyota's seem to run rough with them..Ive tried them a few times. I do really like NGK V-Power copper plugs though in toyotas. You can pick those up for around 2$ each at advanced auto.

I use NGK. In addition to many other sources, Intense Motorsports (a well known performance shop in AZ) recommended NGK, and use a step colder if force induction.

I has my bosch wires in for like a month, then went to pull one out and the boot came off. Just go OEM, you won't notice a performence gain from oem plugs and wires vs the other guys

NGK plugs are great man. V-Power coppers are perfectly fine for our cars and run smooth. If you dont feel like going to the dealer just get you some of those and a set of plug wires from advanced auto. MAKE SURE YOU USE THE ANTISEEZE GREASE ON THE WIRE BOOTS THOUGH SO THEY DONT GET STUCK.

for the spark plugs; i would have to go with either stock denso or denso Iridium. but ngk are okay too. depending on how much u are planning to spend on tuning.

Iridiums are pointless on these cars. Even if you plan on building a built up turbo celica you could run NGK Coppers just fine. You arent not going to get any noticable performance out of plugs and wires on celica's.

So now I'm at NGK plugs, and OEM wires. So, getting off the plug discussion for a bit, is the OEM wires the best. I think one person said this, and everyone else was talking about plugs. And fuel filters are pretty much all the same. So I think I'm just about ready to start this thing. Sorry if I'm being annoying about some of this stuff, I just love my car, and I want to be absolutely positive about what's going on it. Thanks again to everyone who's posted so far.

ok if you want the best stick with K&N its much better then apexi and you should invest in a cold air intake
wires just go to advanced auto and buy the xact wires those will be fine.... as for plugs the v-power is ok but personally my next set is NGK iridiums... and while your at it at advanced get GP sorensen cap and rotor |

What's a GP sorensen cap and rotor? And I've seen test results that show Apexi being better than k&n, that doesn't mean that I want to pay the $70-80 for it though; which is why I'm more than likely getting k&n.
K&N Apexi K&N 2 I'm just going on the second test, I haven't seen to many of these pages though. They are a little difficult to search for, I keep getting results from the accual companies, which can be flawed. K&N is easier to find info on though. Edit: I already have a CAI, and it has some generic foam filter on it right now. I just want a new one so I can take it off and put it on my girlfriends car. cap and rotor?
that would be a distributor cap and the rotor that goes inside of it this is normal replacement for a tune up |

Oh, distributer cap and rotor. I'll take a look at it, but if it doesn't really have any visable wear or build up on it, I'm not sure I'll change it.
Thanks for the input though. This post has been edited by Bigmeanbulldog55: Feb 2, 2005 - 9:57 PM -------------------- Live Free, Be Happy

I think I've finaly got enough info to be at least pretty well satisfied with what I'm getting. I'd like for poeple to post things if they would like. It never hurts to have to much information. Thanks to all who put there opinion.
NGK V-power copper or Platinum plugs NGK premium wires K&N Air filter (I don't have the $80 to spend on apexi) What ever seems to be the best Fuel Filter I can get from Advanced Possably Distributer Cap and Rotor Just incase your wondering why I was kind of pushing for stuff from the local auto parts store, my uncle (owns machanic shop) gets about a 40% discount there. My dad (Bdoy Shop owner) gets a discount from the dealer, but's it's only like 20%. -------------------- Live Free, Be Happy

Your topic reads "complete tune-up". I think you are forgetting a few things if you are going that route: timing belt, tensioner, idler, oil change, filter, tranny flush and fill w/filter, chassis lube, etc, etc.

Guys, just get off brand air filters, they're all made outta the same crap. Don't get me wrong, k&n and apex is great and better then pep girl's ricey filters. But you guys seem to not realize, you'll never see a difference between filters, cept in your wallet

I'm not talking about restoring the car, I'm just doing a tune up besides plugs. And this forum is open for sugestions on what else I should do and what kinds of things, so if you have any more info on what I should do or things that I didn't understand that you said, please write. Thanks. And the air filter post: Do you really think they are all the same? I've never had anything but the "cheaper" kinds. It'd be cool if they were all the same though. I've heard that they were before, but it was from the guy at autozone, and we all know how they can be sometimes. I bought a K7N airfilter. Can't really notice a performance gain. I guess MPG went up a lil. The thing is that its a lifetime filter so its worth the money

I've used the cones on every car I've had, they've just all been the autozone/advanced brands. I really think these things work if you put them in the right place. If your going to leave it up top like the short ram air things, then you'll notice a small difference. But if you run it down under the motor or in the fender, you'll see a good bit more gains. I've had the actual ram air (forced air) on my car, and thats what I like best. I've just got to find a way to make it work the way I want and look less getto.

bosches are ment for domestic cars, not imports. For imports, NGK and Denso Iridium are the way to go.

Iridium and platinum plugs are just a waste of money unless you're too lazy to change plugs or are running 300+ HP out of the engine. Come on guys, these are CELICAS! On average we're makin what 135 HP out of a GT? Get some copper Densos or NGKs for like $1.29 a piece and put them in the car. I guaruntee you you won't be able to tell any difference from those to an expensive iridium plug. As for plug wires, any of that "Autozone" brand crap, especially if there like painted wires and stuff aren't meant for performance. Just replace your OEM wires or like you said the NGK premium wires, but they won't provide any real gains.
Same goes for air filters, there is no difference between different brands for a stock air filter. -------------------- 1999 Celica GT

Woah, dude, mine didn't look anything near that bad and I had it in for 100K!!!! Is moisture getting in there somehow? The photo makes it look like rust. Mine just had some white corrosion on it. Is the gasket intact around the distributor cap?

Where does one get a cap and rotor anyway? I only have a Pep Boys in town and don’t really trust them.
As far as plugs, I have always heard that iridium and platinum and all of those fancy ones are a waste. They are just coated copper and they corrode faster because they are coated. If you can find silver plugs, they are the best conductor and corrode much slower. I wonder if anyone makes silver rotors and caps? -------------------- Michael
