ok guys, heres my problem, I buy alot of crap off ebay. I saw This Air Intake on ebay for like $10, it looks nice and all, but would it really fit properly? Also, I really doubt it gives you "INSTANT 10-15 HP" if anything I was thinking more like 3-5 hp. Also, I want to start my way into messing around with my engine, and the best way to learn is hands on. So would this be a good starting spot for me?

looks like it would work, but it being short ram i doubt it would gain as much hp as a cold air system.
heres a how to i wrote http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showto...&hl=cold+intake |

so a cold air intake actually does give you some hp boost?

Both will give you small HP gains but not alot, the cold air intake and short ram both have good benifits and downfalls.
Short Ram intake - less distance for the air to travel from intake to throttlebody. Can be prone to sucking in Hot air from the engine bay which will starve the engine of those extra earned HP, probably not as much of an issue as people make out but something worth considering. and my personal choice of modification to the intake system. Cold air intake - Guarantees you cold air going into the engine which is always good but the engine has to work harder to suck the air along all the pipework required to locate the filter in a cold airstream, depending upon the routing of the pipework the air can get heated up just as much as the short ram intake from the pipework soaking up alot of heat from the engine. The best option would be to have a short straight intake pipe in a cold airflow. Using a sort ram intake and fabricating a cold airbox to encase it would be a good option, aslong as there is plenty of cold air inlets as to not restrict the airflow. Each method has good and bad points, its all down to personal preferance. |

hmm, cant i just build an A/C for my short ram, lol. Ok but being serious you think a short ram would be best? hmm, Would it be possible to get both... maybe cut n weld some pipes together, or would this be pointless?

A cold air is going to be much better. The idea is, for s tock air system is a cold air, but it is restrected. therefor adding aftermarket will make less restictive and better flow. cold air combusts better, and is more dense therfor more power result. Your still only to maybe gain 1-3 hp.. but it does help.. a short ram will do nothing. the hot air is going to cross out the gain of the less restictive system.

the problem with the cheapo ebay intake is it might not be legal in your state. The filters are crap.
there have been dozens of cai vs short ram discussions. I like the short ram. I don't drive hard often and I feel a slightly better throttle responce and better mileage. I went with an AEM short ram for a 92-95 civic. All AEM intakes are C.A.R.B. exempt, or pending C.A.R.B. exemption (50-state legal). Picture in profile don't waste your money on a crap ebay filter, go for a K&N or AEM with a short or cai. -------------------- |
