my car seems to have like twice as much pull when i start it up cold wait about 15 secs and drive off...when the car is warm it seems slower....does this have anything to do with temperature of the air in the engine creating higher boost? many people have said that on a dyno cold air intake systems show hardly any improvement....well in a dyno u r not traveling down the road allowing colder outside air to be forced into the engine, shouldnt this be taken into consideration? if i installed a cold air intake would i notice a difference in performance related to how my car drives cold?

when you say boost do you mean that you have a turbo?
First off the point of a cai is to enlarge the size of the intake tube while still sucking up cold air. The factory intake is cold air. Second. when you get a dyno.. The put a fan infront of it, so your car will get sufficant air in around the engine. There going to do an avarage temp because thats what it will be outside. Its not always going to be sucking up cold air, esp.. if its warm. Third the reason its a cold air intake is because its not sucking up heat from the engine bay, like the short ram. Cold air is more dence which is better fopr more power. My guess is, you might gain 1-2 hp with a proper cai. |

First off, you should never drive your car hard when it's cold. It's really bad for the engine. Second, your car doesn't produce "boost" unless it has some sort of forced induction, like a turbocharger.
But yes, air temperature affects power, and you will get small gains from a cold air intake. On very cold nights, I can feel a difference in the way my car accelerates compared to on very hot days. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

QUOTE(Coomer @ Mar 22, 2005 - 7:05 PM) First off, you should never drive your car hard when it's cold. It's really bad for the engine. Just out of interest, where`d you get that information from?? When you say cold, how cold. The opperating temp of your engine will only be effected by extreme cold conditions. Ive driven my car hard in "cold" conditions (-6+) and the engine temp remained the same as usual, Turbo cars on the whole drive alot better in cold conditions as the charge air dosent get as hot from the turbo heat etc etc. -50 type cold might effect your car as it will prevent the oil from getting to the correct viscocity to lubricate your car in the propper manor but thats an extreme, also thicker oil lubrucates better than thin oil but its harder to pump round the engine but once its worked its way round it should be just fine. N/A cars work in a similar way as already stated, cold air is dencer/more oxygen which allows the ECU to inject more petrol as there is more air to help burn it etc etc you already know this of course. Still cold weather = push harder. Hot weather is when you have to be carefull, hot intake temps, thinner oil yadda yadda yadda. |

Let it warm up then you'll be fine. |

Yeah,
I meant that driving hard when the engine hasn't warmed up is bad. ![]() -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...
