Decideing against engine swapping a 3SGTE into my 96 Celica ST or just selling it and buying a 3,000$ 1st gen 6bolt Talon TSi AWD.
What would the best bang for the buck be? I just want to do 13's and I'll be happy. Also, on a scale of 1 - 10, how difficult is the engine swap from someone that doesnt know much about engines in general? I really dont know what to do for my next car. This 110 horsepower isnt cutting it anymore. |

Dont do a swap yourself if you dont know what your doing. I personally cant rate an engine swap when I dont know what you do. To me the engine swap was probably a 7 if 10s hardest. But then again I think fiberglass work rates 12 because IDK what im doing with it. It's all relative.

It sure is relative...I'd rather make a sub enclosure entirely out of fiberglass than change a motor mount.
As far as bang for the buck, the Talon will be faster for less money. But DSMs are notoriously unreliable. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

Don't forget a new tranny too if you get the DSM, and then another for a spare once it breaks.

QUOTE(Supersprynt @ Apr 11, 2005 - 8:53 PM) cough, crankwalk, cough. Wont happen lol, getting a 6bolt, 1990-1993 DSM. No CW like 7's I was thinking that as well, get the 6bolt, do all the tune up and repair/maintence in the book it says to do. Then rebuild the thing, so it doesnt break on me. Im going to stick with the stock 14b turbo and not going above the stock 16 psi. Hoping to buy a virgin and just do these mods: The free mods, remove the air restrictor, etc...little things New exhaust manifold (stock one is probably rusted all to hell) New 3" turbo catback High flow catalytic converter, with a higher flowing unit 2.5" High flow downpipe Better flowing 02 sensor housing 190 fuel pump K&N intake filter, and new hard intake pipe Boost gauge Manual boost controller Short shifter then a new performance clutch when the stock one goes out This post has been edited by StaticKnotX: Apr 11, 2005 - 5:50 PM |

Bang for buck is easily the talon. With the 6bolt ur pretty much good to go. But I would get a new clutch for it. Preferably a 2400. Also check the compression before you buy get it to make sure its equal all across.
Oh ya if ur going to get a new exhaust. The N1 is easily the best way to go. If ya want to know more about the DSM hit up.. www.dsmtuner.com This post has been edited by prompt: Apr 11, 2005 - 6:06 PM |

totally the dsm. They r incredibly easy to mod n with the stock 14b turbo you can hit the 12s. I think theres some1 on the board who did high 11s wit the stock turbo. They r great car n sound mean. but like each car u build somethin always tends to break since its old n used....n ill ask my bro in law bout da 6 bolt thing...im totally not sure bout it easier

wish I could explain it, but im tired lol. Def. going with the DSM. Friend just got back his ECU with DSMLink and has it set so his rev limiter is his launching rpm. ****ing pulls, 1st gear was done in a second and we were already hitting 40. Def. going with DSM. AWD > all
His isnt tuned at all, but is modded enough to where he can support 20 psi. I forget what turbo he has, ill let you know when I find out This post has been edited by StaticKnotX: Apr 11, 2005 - 9:20 PM |

I never post right now though, just soaking up the info for when I get mine. Also I checked the compression on a talon I was looking at, 150 across. Any good? 150 across for a 1st gen is damn impressive considering how old they are.
As for the 6-bolt its similar as to the fact it will get crank-walk as much as any type of car would. The 7-bolt was internally built weaker, but still a very powerful engine. Also check for the turbo seals. That is pretty much the only problem on them, anmd they dont cost much to replace anyways. BTW how many miles are on the car? |

130,000. 80,000 on the rebuild, 80k on the new stock turbo..14b, all maintence has been done to it. Never drives it hard and its his daily driver. Asking 3,000. Im more then likely going to get it, cause as a added bonus, its only 30 miles away This post has been edited by StaticKnotX: Apr 12, 2005 - 5:42 PM |

what's funny tho is that a 14b isn't stock. Its a upgrade from the stock. The stock turbo on eclipses\talons\lasers is the t25.
One last thing is to ask when he changed the timing belt just in case. If he has changed it recently then ur pretty much all set to go. First thing you should buy for the car though is a Greddy Turbo Timer. Cost less than $100 and it helps save the life of ur turbo very much. |
