the vent in the hood of a GT-4..... sorry i don't see how it works in the posititon it's in ????????????
as the intercooler top box sits between the vent and windscreen ! i have a plastic rain trap to catch any water, thus stopping any flow of air plus i've got 1" of insulation to the underside of the hood !!!!! if it's ment to help cool the top box of the intercooling system, them surely there need to be a through flow of fresh air via that grill and out of the rear hood slots !! anyone ??? anyone understand what i've said ????? -------------------- ![]() Life is for living, and you don't get a second chance Take care now !! |

Doesn't the air enter through the grill on the bumper?

the water to air intercooler stays cool on its own but can get some heat soak which is real bad, because of waters characteristics
it will take longer to get heat soak becasue it is water, but when it is hot, i will not cool down as fast. therefore that vent is there to let as much heat as possible OUT of the hood, and away from the intercooler -------------------- ![]() |

my '4' is stock, what i described is what i have........ i just don't what good the vent actualy does on the street car ????? and surely have the grill over the cool would make more sence ??? run the car a bit hard and come to a stop
the swappers in the US w/the vent say they see heat rise out of the vent... so yea, it should work for street use. -------------------- ![]() |

yeah i see the heat rising and in the winter with the snow falling i get steam

the vent sits right over the HOT exhuast manild and turbo to vent all the hot air produced by the manifold/trubo (ever see pics of exhaust manilfolds glowing? thats a lot of heat) .
you shouldnt have any hood insulation covering the vent. if u do, then its probably something a former owner could have done. i would recomend cutting out the hole so the vent can do its job. rain, or snow will not harm anything. the stock intercooler is water to air, meaning that its filled with engine coolant, that is connected to a pump, that then goes to a small radiator that is mounted to the front of the car. if you are getting any heat soak in traffic, i would recomend adding in an intercooler sprayer on the heatexchanger, or maybe a small fan. what do you mean when u say your are getting over heating problems in traffic? does the motor just seem slower because of heatsoak, or does the temp gauge in the car go up ? edit: also, you should doubble check that the intercooler pump that sends cooant from the topmount to the heat exchanger is working correctly and that your intercooler is filled with the correct amount of coolan. Some ideas on why there is insulation: keeps bonnet itself cool, might prevent paint deterioration on the bonnet, reduce engine noise, keep the temp sensor stabilised, keep the engine warm in colder climates, keeps water and dirt out. -------------------- ![]() |

i would just cut out the hole where the vent is, and keep the rest of the insulation.
did you make sure your hear exchager pump is running correctly and that the intercooler has coolan? i would think that the water to air IC would have very little heatsoak issues. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

i'm gonna cut out the insulation from the front lip to the back of the vent some time today!
you can just see where the plastic rain trap shows at the front...... i'll leave the rain trap for now and see !!!!!! i just don't want the engin full of snow at -40 in the winter, cause i'm sure that couls harm the engine........ yeah checked pump and coolent levels yesterday..... both are fine.... The ST205 is stupidly over cooled. It comes standard with underbonnet insulation and a metal plate over the centre grill. I've been out on track with that setup and driven very very hard indeed with no movement at all on the temperature gauge. Having said that, any way you can get rid of heat is good, and less weight is more speed. Don't cut a hole, rip the whole lot off (wear a mask, as it's nasty stuff) and bin it. Then laugh at the heat haze and scare other traffic when raindrops hit the front end and *boil*....... -------------------- JDM ST205

popstar, dont worry about water or snow. ive had my hood for 2 years now ... snow will not fill up in your engine bay and it will not cause any problems to yours motor.

Yeah i live in Seattle and it rains just about everyday - matter of fact it was raining just an hour ago (rain in summer sucks) and its never done anything bad to my hood and ive had my hood 2.5 years!

One of the best things to do IS to remove the under bonnet padding. You are suffering from residual heat build up, which on a four is a bad thing. Try to get as much air flow into the engine bay as you can, and let the heat in there disperse.
A front mount is the way to go though, it'll solve all your problems with heat build up. Thats what is going into my 185 when it's fully re-built and breathing fire ! A little birdie told me that the Intercooler from an iveco van is the correct size for the ST-205. Available on e-bay for arond £30 uk pounds ! Try and find one cheaper that'll fit, bet you cant !? so the GT4 hoods have a water trap or no? I know you all said that a little water in the engine wont hurt... but just curious what those vents look like up close...

No water trap. Turbo/exhaust manifold under the vent. Water doesn't last long.

i had a water trap, that had a run off gullly to the front.......
i've striped it out for the summer but will replace it come winter..... i don't care what you guy's say a thick layer of snow at -20 is not good condition to start a turbo working in, in my opinion !!!! but as for rain, i don't think the water even touches the engine when it's running ![]() -------------------- ![]() Life is for living, and you don't get a second chance Take care now !! |
