About 2-3 months ago, I noticed a pretty nice red MR2 Turbo cruising around my town, with an elderly man behind the wheel. It didn't really hit me until I saw it again today for the first time in a while that it's a 1995 with tan leather interior in mint condition, and it only has something like 70,000 miles on it. So heres my thoughts.....

For one thing, the owner is an older man. Like ready-for-the-retirement-home old. In this respect I see a huge opportunity here, because watching the old man climb in and out of the car once at the supermarket looked like he didn't enjoy trying to cram himself into the tiny two-seater whatsoever. And he drives it like an Oldsmobile, so thats always a plus.

Bottom line here is that I potentially have sighted an owner of a last production year MR2 Turbo that looks to be in excellent shape, aside from some faded clearcoat which isn't a concern. And it also appears that he doesnt realize how much his car is worth- BIG plus.
So heres the plan, and sorry if it sounds kinda pathetic but it may be worth it to give it a try- I'm going to casually start a discussion with him next time I see him and talk about the car, and see if he would be interested in maybe selling it or trading at any point. This really is my dream car, and it might just be my opportunity to get one for way cheaper than it should go for. smile.gif If that sounds sad, so be it....but the inner car nut wants it so bad that I'm willing to at least test the waters so to speak and see what he thinks.

Is this wrong of me to stalk the elderly for the perfect car, or am I well justified in my actions?? biggrin.gif

Sounds like a good plan. Just let him know when hes ready to get rid of it to call you.. he might just be ready or he might love it. I know il be that old driving somthing that small an nice.

But then again after talking to a guy that had a 93 turbo for like 6 months he said he had problems non stop, I dont think i would want the trouble for a daily driver.

Looks like its never been modified at all and been well taken care of mechanically, but one never knows with an older car. It sounds like it runs great from the one time I heard it running and driving around.

I would actually prefer a turbo AWD because of the winters around here, but if things unfold right and I end up getting a chance at owning it.....I'll have to do it. smile.gif

she sold it when i was at school, and now the thing belongs to a guy that treats it well, but is into vinyl.

I think you should just be honest and tell the old man what his car is worth, and that you would really love to buy it from him when he is done with it (now or later). Then give him a fair offer. Doesn't have to be as high as the value of the car, but a fair one. That way you are being honest, and if he wants to sell it, he would probably sell it to you, and might loose some bucks, but he won't have to look for a buyer.

Also, this way would probably don't mess with your (damn, I can't spell).. anyway, the inner voice in you or whatever.. I can't remember what it is called. You won't feel guilty for tricking an old person..

I know I would much rather sell my car to someone like that, than to maybe find out this little kid is trying to f* me over and get a decent car cheap just because I'm old..

Definately. I'm not some little punk looking to rip off an older man, but I figure that its somebody who would actually sell the car for more like its worth as opposed to adding on the rarity value and slapping a $12,000+ price tag on it when he does sell it.

Even if he isnt interested, I'd still like to talk to him about it and let him know that I would be just the right person to take care of it in the event that he sells it. It worked once with another guy I know in my town who has an '89 Supercharged MR2 MKI with 65,000 miles. I have pictures of it still, and was considering selling my Celica for it last year....but they're so ugly that i couldnt do it. wink.gif Now a 95 Turbo on the other hand..... biggrin.gif

What should I say to him though?? I dont know him at all and I dont want him thinking I'm going to steal his car...lol

A friend of mine once told me a story about an Audi. Her parents saw an Audi that they really liked in a parking lot, so they left the guy a note saying hey I really like your car. If you ever decide to sell it, please give us a call. I am interested. 2 years later or so, he did call and they bought the car. You never know....

Pieter, I'm up in northwest Jersey by Hope/Blairstown. This isnt immaculate either, so its probably a different guy....unless he happened to be down your way.
