well i havnt been through college yet, ill be a freshman this year, but i have a g5 imac. theres no way id buy a pc. all the apps i need for college will run on my mac. i dont want to deal with security issues/viruses or what not, plus i like the way mac osx tiger runs. a powerbook would be sweet, just dont get the 12", theyre too small. make sure to use the student discount when you buy yours. also, you get a free ipod mini when you buy it before sept 24! and do i need to mention that apple just plain makes sexy computers? smile.gif

oh and do you really need a laptop? after thinking about getting one myself, i decided to get the imac because its a much more powerful computer and its a lot cheaper.

in hindsight my only regret is I didn't have a laptop in college. then I coulda worked in the library, used airport out on the lawn

in conclusion, get a mac. they are awesome, and all that compatibility stuff you hear is a thing of the past, anyone with half a brain can get around most issues

Personally, I do not like Mac's:thumbsdown: , simply because their .gui program isnt as good as microsoft, add a crappy single button mouse and you can have a hard time getting around on them. I have never had a problem with getting around, I just dont like them.. my Dell Inspiron 9300 is supreme! wink.gif

yes they NOW make it. Too many people switching over and they were losing money

Its all personal Opinion on what is better.. Personally I like Windows, I have never used OSX, but im sure it has its good things and its bad things, just like microsoft.

I want Google to make an operating system.. those guys are geniuses. Microsoft tried to buy them out, but they said " nope... sorry!"

Google is great but far from genius, they wrote the google search engine itself in python, which is the easiest and most forgiving of all languages, they just got lucky that it hit big (basically the way it works is genius but the actual knowledge needed to do it is simple), either way google is great though I use GMail in which I still have 50 invites if you want one celicaST just PM me with your email and i'll send one.

As far as XP vs. OSX, once you fix the mistakes that the Win programmers made (using open source programs or manually) it becomes a very good OS due mostly to it's popularity, out of the box it sucks though. I can say i've never had a virus and can count on one hand how many trojans, worms, etc. i've gotten (actually last time I checked I had one in 3 months that was non-active). Remember this with Windows there are 3 commonly exploited ports, 5, 8, and 23 (or something like that) that really need to be patched, or you can also go in and regualate all the ports manually (which is one of the fixes for bittorrent) and only allow certain programs like updaters and downloaders to use them, which in turn narrows down your chance of something downloading itself, that combined with a good firewall and browser (such as fireox) almost eliminates malicious (sp?)programs.

Powerbook rules all. PC's in my opinion are so boring. Windows is overrated and causes way too much problems. Viruses are pretty much non existant on Powerbooks so u dont have to worry about much of that crap. Powerbooks rule any PC.

Your ignorant. Their gui is wonderful, and you don’t need two mouse buttons. Second of all, inspiron is far from supreme, its the home user line of the dells. Buy a latitude or an IBM ThinkPad, but not an inspiron. I get around on a mac nearly as well as a pc and ive been doing pc repair for over 4 years, I think I know the pc interface pretty well smile.gif.

If all PC users can claim is that macs only have a one button mouse, thats pretty sad.

I'm a mac and PC user. The ups, and downs of macs as I see them for a college student like myself:

mac plusses-
faster
easier to use
no problems with worms, trojans, or viruses
works better with design and graphics programs

mac minuses-
costs more
not as many programs (games are the biggest loss. You can almost always find a mac equivalent of the other important programs, eg accounting, work processing, design, etc.)

I use a 14' iBook when I'm at school. No complaints, except friends PC laptop doesn't play nice with my copy of myth. But there are plenty of other people to beat, so I'm not too bummed.

I'm also a Mac + PC user. I love them both and I can't live missing either one of them.

PC:
1.) GAMES GAMES GAMES GAMES GAMES
2.) Fast (result of it being easy to upgrade, lots of available parts, and cheap)
3.) IE, Opera, Netscape, Firefox, Mozilla (With all hypes about how good Firefox is, most user STILL use Win's IE. It's definitely a MUST to have one laying around to check your HTML code.)
4.) GAMES GAMES GAMES GAMES GAMES!!!
5.) OHHH WEEEE GAMES GAMES GAMES!!!! (k imah stop.. u should get my point..)

Mac:
1.) Web Developing (OSX is built on Unix, I can have Apache/PHP/MySQL and lots of server things running on this box. Very convnience when doing database work. Note: I later found out WinXP supports PHP and MySQL too, let me know if I'm wrong.)
2.) Graphic Design (Even though the processor is clocked at a much slower speed than my PC (1.2GHz vs 2.8GHz, 1GB ram vs 1GB ram), the mac is a lot faster switching between huge programs and a lot faster when handling large files like PSD files.. etc.)
3.) For School (Cal Poly teaches Java, which is awesome because OSX is built on Unix with its own shell that could natively compile and run Java, instead of having to download compiler like Borland or J++ or telnet whatever. Thumbs down for all you PC users suckers!!! hahahaha!)
4.) Organizer (iCal, iPhoto, Addressbook, Mail, iTunes... they help u get things organized)
5.) Virus Free (Note: not like mac doesn't get attack, it's more like the mac community is so tiny that hackers don't even mind attacking the macs.) But that's a YAY for the macs, nay for the PC.
6.) Internet (due to #5, surfing web, and downloading illegal music is BEST on the Mac without much worries)

I have the 15" PowerBook (Had a 12" but sold for 1000$). Whenever I open that baby, people look at me admire at the glowing apple logo. It's an awesome feeling.

oh yea, and the best thing is:

you're in a class with ur 15" powerbook on the table, professor turns off lights to show slide show or whatever the hell he needs the lights off for. immediately, your 15" screen dimmed, and your keyboard lid up.. right there, u'll notice people around u just couldn't stop but stare at whatever just happened to the laptop, and how beautiful your keyboard is. Too bad the backlid keyboard is not that bright, I'd love it to have the keys spotlight it onto the ceiling.
