I bought these kybs off ebay. There was one problem on the side of the shocks where the two holes that are supposed to get drill back to the rotor or piece it connects. The holes are to far apart? those two holes are also further apart from each other comparing to the stocks shocks i took out. did anyone have these problems.

Umm, are you sure they aren't the rear shocks? If you bought them off of ebay, im pretty sure you got all 4 KYB's if I am correct?
Anyways, the ones that look like tubes (shock inserts) go in to the front of your car. You have to twist off you old shock inserts in the front struts and put in your new KYB's in. Make sure you add just a little oil into the holders where the inserts are gonna go. The KYB Shocks/struts that look like the stock ones for the celica are actually for the rear. If you mix this up your pretty screwed if you went further and tried to force them on into your car. If I am correct you should have the silver color KYB GR-2 Models right? Look at the pictures! ![]() ![]() These are actually for the front of the car, They are the shock Inserts! ![]() These are the struts for the rear of the celica! ![]() If you have something different than the stuff above, then I guess im out of advices. Perhaps you received the wrong type of struts? E-bay sellers tend to sell the cheap stuff and do it at half-AS |

Sorry, Samurai, but I cannot figure out what you're talking about...the rotor isn't connect to the struts, the knuckle is -- rotor's connected to the knuckle -- and why would you have to drill holes in your shocks?

Good how-to on dealing with the stubborn gland nuts:
http://www.turbomr2.com/MR2/HowTo/Suspensi...ringStrut-1.HTM I used the vise + prybar method and it worked well. Just remember to only crack the nut, then get the old strut rightside up again so you don't lose the oil, which KYB wants you to use with the new inserts. |

my problem wasnt the gland nut, it was sealed over the cartidge, making it impossible to get out.

What was sealed, and how?
When I disassembled mine, had to remove the gland nut, which was difficult, then the oil seal, which was held in place by the nut, then the cartridge came out. |

I can't figure out why you guys would have so much problems removing the inserts. My shocks and struts were probbaly dead for like 4ever on that car when I bought it. |

so the shock inserts that are suppose to go in the front, i should take the old insert out the stock shocks and put these in and for the rear the new shocks and inserts should fit perfectly right? Thanks for the step by step page.

Please note the how-to is not for a Celica -- it's for an MR2. Celicas use full struts on the rears, so no swapping of cartridges is necessary.

Thats not really gonna be effective without your old struts as a holder for the inserts. As long as you put in your new inserts your strut will become like new, provided that they aren't bent or rusted to the core. ******Make sure you dump the liquid in the struts and add a bit of new motor oil in it***** The rear struts are a pain in da A*s. You will need some small vise grips to hold the nut on the sway bar links. so that you can remove the bolts tat hold the sway bar and the sturt together. (Its a piece of meatl 3-5 inches long and has rubber joints at the end of each section). You must be very careful, because they are probbaly stuck and rusted. The hardest thing is these are HEX bolts and if you screw up u will over thread the hexs. You would end up like me sawing off this little metal bar and buying 2 new ones. It costs nearly $50 and up a piece! For the rear, I had a 2" drop in springs so I didn't really need the spring compressor when assembling the struts again. any questions? put up another reply |

man me and my uncle tried to put on the shocks today. and well everything went wrong. first the shocks that were for the rear. the ebay dude i got it from (jdmwerks) sent me 2 right side. that sucked. and for the strut cartridges for the front. Well we got them in the shock holder but the circular piece that is suppose to hold the struts onto the shocks tighly didnt fit but i still put it on like that. and now my car makes a metal tapping sound when i hit bumps on the road. i think ima just got to the dealer ship and order the front shocks and struts. that wayil know itll fit. and im gonna go get the left rear shock also. hopeffuly everything goes to plan

You didn't tighten the gland nut and you're driving on it?
Oh. My. God. Betting that metal sound is the cartridge moving around inside the strut. This is bad. The gland nut's not supposed to be all the way into the strut -- there's supposed to be a small amount of room between the end of the strut and the nut flange. RE-read the instructions KYB included. There's a lot of torque that has to be put on the nut. I had a 200-lb friend using a 16" bar to torque mine. No noise. And jdmwerks will send you a replacement left strut...apparently it's best to call him. Why spend the extra money on Toyota parts when the KYB are the same, performance-wise, and you've already bought them? |

Oh my gosh, even after that many posts with Underlined Tips. You forgot to add the oil to the cartridges? Anyways, are you sure you got two of the same parts. You should have looked at the boxes the guysent you from e-bay. If they have the same part number then they are the same. If they are differen't then they are different! :p E-bay is one of the places where you should never do all your buying from. I should know better . (Gives the middle finger at ebay seller JDM_KRS). Shipping is probbaly gonna kill you when you send that thing back for an exchange. |

Actually, the replacement cartridges use the oil to improve heat transfer and rust prevention. With the amount of force being put on those cartridges, oil wouldn't prevent it from moving around if it's incorrectly installed.

The way you've written this sentence, it seems you didn't put the gland nut back on the strut. I'm sure you couldn't have possibly made that big an error, so could you explain what you mean? today i got new struts put in today. no more stupid scratching noise. turns out the kybs i bought from jdmwers was right after. the only thing was he sent me only one circular nut to tighten the strut cartridge to the shocks and he sent me to Right rear. atleast now i got extra strut cartridges and a Right rear shock. So when i need to replace them again all i need is the left rear and another circle piece thing so i guess in the long run everything went alright. thanks everyone for their help. peace

Crap! I didn't add oil, I just changed my strut cartridges yesterday...
I am noticing a rubbing noise when I steer though, is that because I did not lubricate them? I didn't realize I had to add oil to the strut housing... am I going to have to pull them off and do it now? How bad is it to leave it as is? |

You want to use an extremely light oil -- KYB instructions say you should re-use the old strut oil, which is lighter than most motor oils.
However, I've got an e-mail from a KYB tech (Troy Horn to be specific) who wrote there's no need to add oil when using their cartridges -- I'd asked before I bought and received their instructions. Frankly, I didn't do the oil either, relying on the tech's information, and haven't noticed any problems. The part of the cartridge that turns is the piston rod, which wouldn't be affected by oil in the strut. |

from what i gather, the oil is just there to help heat transfer. Wouldn't matter if you did not put oil in it.

If you plan to put the car under stress -- racing, autocrossing, road trips -- it's a good idea. Better heat transfer = better longevity.

The original ones had some type of liquid (liquid unkown X) in them that helped when the cart rubbed against the inner strut. Since we are replacing the cart, we need to add this X liquid in it and to save time and money we just dump a little bit of motor oil in it to help with friction. |
