I have recently been noticing an increase in the amount of exhaust smoke that comes from my celica at least when I start her up. Its like a gray/lite blue tint. Could this be an early warning sign of some upcoming problems?

has something to do with worn valve seals or something. can't remember exactly what my mechanic said. It is just a bit of oil burning. Use a higher weight oil and it should go away. don't think it is anything to really worry about.

Problems with oil - are always something you should worry about. Get it checked and serviced if needed.

Piston rings wearing out possibly. Bluish smoke is oil burning for sure. It would be a good idea to keep track of how fast your oil goes away.

i changed the oil like 2000 miles ago so yea i figured it could use a little more. I check the amount tho and the stick showed that the oil is exactly in the middle between the high and low lines. How much does it cost to repair piston rings?

how many miles on your car? its probably the valve seals, its a very common issue on the 5sfe. yuo can drive around for years without getting it fixed, just keep an eye out for your oil level.

im leaning more toward the piston rings.....i just had that same exact problem with my car it was burning way to much oil, it was burning about 2 quarts every 100 miles. It was my rings, just replaced them and no more problem, but that's my opinion biggrin.gif

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.

Piston rings and valve seals are different. Valvle seals are seals tha is placed over the valve stem to prevent oil leakage between the stem and the guide, and piston rings are split rings installed in a groove in the piston that seals the compression chamber from the crankcase. I guess your best bet would be to change valve seals first and if that doesn't work, then go for the piston rings. Come to think of it, if you're NOT burning too much oil, but have blue smoke, it probably is the valve seals. Good luck with getting it fixed smile.gif .

haha, my car has been doing this for 5 months.... smokes when you start it up, just rev it a few times and it clears right out. if you have to add more than a quart of oil between changes, then you should get it checked out, if you dont burn much though, its the valve seals, dont worry about it, just put it on your list of things to do and get around to it some day.
