Ok, with my 4age swap I haven't been driving with any power steering for the last couple weeks. My celica feels totally different and turning when the wheels aren't rotating is a pain in da ass. Anyways, I noticed a big difference in control when I take the corners around my place. (i live out in the countryside). It feels much more like your in control. Overall, Power steering has its pros and cons. It does give more total control, but at the same time a full revolution of the steering wheel is a major drag. For now, i'll be the only one on 6G without any power steering in my celica. My tendons are pumped now!

there are a few people on here that dont have theirs. i would never loose mine.
i think you might have more of a feel of the road while driving, but it should really make your handling any different -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

ps helps absorb some of the shock on the road.
I would never want to drive a car without powersteering. Parallel parking is as hard enough as it is. |

ok from my understanding, if ur car has power steering and u shut the car off while ur rolling its HARD AS HELL to steer...but if u remove the system its easier to steer without p/s?

my friend and i actualyl have a name for driving without power steering
we go to the top of a hill with winding roads to the bottom... get it rolling down, take it out of gear, turn off the motor and then turn the key to the on position then we drive around at 2 in the morning with no lights and confuse the **** out of the people that cant see or hear us but know that we are driving by... its pretty stealthy but i have noticed that without the power steering the car handles a lot differently, there is a lot more feedback in the wheel but you need a little more power for it... its cool to drive without power steering when you are screwing around on the back roads somewhere up in the mountains but as soon as i hit traffic in san diego or try to drive at 10 mph in a parking lot im sure glad i have my powersteering |

Most race cars don't have power steering... and like you said its a great thing... you do feel the road so much better.. but parking is a bitch .. but do you drive more or park more?

A true manual rack is different from a power steering rack that isn't working... As far as I know... I think ALL 6th gen celicas had power steering standard... I don't like broken power steering racks... I do however love a true manual steering rack.

So, how would you go about converting? I've noticed the Celica's steering to be a little uninformative. There's not too much chance I'll switch to manual, but I'd still like to know how to do it. You're going to tell me it's not possable without a custom box since there aren't any Celica's without PS, aren't you?

I used to hate driving in a parking lot with my 85' civic with no power steering but when I got the celica I began to miss the lack of powersteering. Also when I used to drive up my street in this civic I would just coast with the engine off for like a minute and then just glide and park in front of my house, kind of dumb but it was cool driving a car with no sound!

I used to have no power steering in my '89 CRX, it was uncomfortable at first but you get used to it and it does feel like you have a lot of control compared to cars with ps.
Anyways... Can't you just drain the ps fluid or something? |

I'd like to do something to stop the numb feeling I get from this car. I just figured it was because it is FWD, but the more I learn, the more I think it's just this car. It would be hard for me to put in a lot of time, effort, and money to lower the value of my car and take away an upgrade like ps. I'd have to see if someone else actually seen an improvement with this.

Front engine car without ps is pooey... Mr2's without ps are fine...you barely can notice it and you do have nice feel of the road...mr2's front ends are lite weight though. My dad has a Sentra without ps and that car sucks to drive....it feels soo numb to me. I would never want a celica without ps...i think the ps is great on our cars...not too easy but not too hard...gives a nice solid feel to the car.

I drove cars without PS in China, it was wierd at first and almost cost an accident cuz I thought all cars in 2004 should have power steering.
You can feel the road better and feel much more control of the car, but parking is slow, all that turning. Once you start driving it doesnt feel difficult at all. It can build your arm strength and endurance at the same time. But I wont give up my power steering, especially in NYC. Cutting lanes in n out of traffic on jam packed roads requires quick reflexs which would be impossible without PS, unless your arms are really built. |
