Ok, so ive been at my school for around 7 or 8 weeks nows(give or take). Im going to centenial college, supposidly the best automotive school in Ontario. For the 6 or 7 weeks ive been at school, ive been bored off my ass. The main reason im there is to learn about paint and get out of there 2 go into the trade as a painter. But heres the kicker, about 3 weeks into the course, my original paint teacher had a heartattack(hez fine thank god), but the guy whos replacing him, is covering the same crap as my old one did and doesnt know a thing about teaching. So im bored as hell, and frankly feel like my money is being wasted. So im kinda at a point now where i gotta figure out what im gonna do. My next semester starts like, next week or so, and it goes untill around x-mas time. So im kinda at a standstill..i kinda wanna just drop out and head right into working. Like finding a job for me shouldnt be to hard, ive done 4 years of highschool shop thats pretty much as indepth as the stuff they do over at centenial college for general mechanical, and ive worked for a year at a tuner shop near by and have spent countless hours working on friends cars. Hell when i was 17 i rebuilt a B18, turboed it and swaped it into an EK civic. I built a 12 second K20A2 powered all motor EG civic drag car. But at the same time im thinking that if things pickup next semester, then ill stick around. But i dunno. What do you guys think??

I think if you're asking this to a bunch of teenagers then you're in worse shape than you think, lol.

I'm a teenager and I will say stay in school..... Dropping out is the easy way out, sure if may be slow now, but everyone has those classes, things will pick up. Who wants to hire a drop out? Look at %'s, if you graduate you will be more likely to get a job and make a LOT more money

heres the thing though..my lowest mark in highschool for auto was 94%, my lowest mark at college for all my courses is a 84% for math(witch i was exemted from), my second lowest is 93%. The course im in doesnt give u any credentials except for saying u graduated from centenial college with basic skills, if i graduate and go into the trade, ill be making the same amount of $ as if i just went into it from highschool. Like im paying $3500 to drive 40 min to n from school every day to chill with some friends and learn crap i learned in grade 10. They designed the course for people who have no background what so ever, like the retards who come in pickin their nose, scratching their ass wearing a shirt with a souped up civic on it and saying "I like cars, honda's are the best thing ever". like yea its challanging for some kids in my class(ie retards who worship civics), but for any one who has had any experience, its completely assinine. Like a friend of mine offered me a job about a week b4 school started workin at his shop gettin paid $16.75 to work on MK4 supra's all day long. I said no cuz i was excited about goin 2 college and meetin people and learning new stuff and every thing. Right now i feel like kickin my self in the head. My best friend went into a dealership about a month after we graduated highschool, hez been workin there since, hez making around $15.50 an hour, working 40 hours a week, gets weekends off.

Listen, we all run into semesters that just plain suck. For example: I am in a weekend Paralegal program and Frankly I’ve been doing great, I haven’t gotten anything lower then and A- and I pulled a GPA of 3.8 for my last semester. I’ve had some awesome teachers, and i got lucky in the courses I took so far, Intro to Law, Criminal Law, Family Law, and Legal Research and Writing. Right now I’m in Real Property and Civil Litigation. My Civil Lit teacher might be the WORST professor I have ever had, we had a quiz and the class average was around a 45%. We just had our mid-term and I got a 78. So yes, it SUCKS, I hate it, the only things I learned in that class is what I taught myself. Most of you that I talk to know that on sunday im on AIM in the computer lab because my prof just goes over personal jurisdiction everytime and then starts reading directly out of the book.
I work in law office, I don’t NEED to get my paralegal certificate but I know I will regret it if I don’t. Plus it looks a lot better on a resume to say I have it, then just the fact that I worked in an office for a year and a half.
Ok Now that my rant it’s over… It is my opinion that you should stay in school. You’re going to be bored, you’re going to be pissed off that you sit there. BUT in the end you will be glad you did it.
Have you tried talking to the professor and telling them that you have already covered the material that he is going over? Or maybe you could talk to someone higher then that.

wow, ok i wrote a lot, idk i was on a roll there.

ahem,

EDIT: I was typing and i didnt see your last post. I just saw this "The course im in doesnt give u any credentials except for saying u graduated from centenial college with basic skills, if i graduate and go into the trade, ill be making the same amount of $ as if i just went into it from highschool."

You don't get some type of degree from the program?

degree or deploma..thats it, like a ticket that says i graduated. One of the guys who used 2 go 2 my highschool started workin at the same dealership as my best friend..my best friend makes the same amount of $ per hour as the guy who graduated from centenial.

EDIT: I already tryed talking 2 my profs tina, but because my highschool shop and the shop i worked at was only practical except for my frist year of highschool shop. Since i have no proof except my word they wont let me out of class. Plus there is no exemtion except for math, witch i already passed with an 84%.

that sucks. I'd say stick with it if you were going to gain someting out of it in the end, like a better job, or pay.

after this course do you take more?

no..the entire course is 36 weeks, then as soon as i "graduate", im just going right into the trade workin in a shop being a shop bitch. IE i go 2 school for 36 weeks, spend $3500 of my own money to be bored off my ass n after i graduate sweep shops and prep cars..like i could b duin now if i get a job at a body shop. I can take more if i wanna, like go more indepth into general mechanics, but the general mechanics course is 2 years of the same crap i learned in highschool but with air conditioning. Thats the one thing i didnt learn in highschool.

Idk man, it is def a hard decision. 36 weeks isnt too bad, but if you can get a job now and you think it's something good that will last and you are that unhappy then go for it.

Stic in school, its like glue. Drop out and you become the regular trash seen by people everyday. U must show that even trash has more potential than those who wear business suits.

Take me for example, business people look at me like trash, but I can do things that only they can dream off. I can swap engines, be a plumber, carpetner, Pc tech, and so many more. When you look at the business people and the people such as yourself and myself. We are actually far more smart, and advanced. Sure a degree proves that you passed the test and is smart, But all that doesn't do crap if you never even touched the materials in real life b4.

Just last friday, the department I was working for had a little before banquet party. All the professers and some smart business people showed up for it. Myself and a few of the office workers were the ones that were sort of catering for them. We were allowed to grab whatever we wanted and do whatever we wanted. I was there and when I looked at them and myself. There was like a major-big-super-humongo difference. They were all in business suits and I was like in this ****ty T-shirt and cargo pants. The thing was, they were all talking about "smart" stuff and I was like helping myself to the food and drinks. They all just stood there and didn't even touch the stuff.

Im like O'yeah!! more food for me tongue.gif

Untill your blind, missing a limb, bleeding to death, and knocked out. Stick in school it will pay-off at the end.

see, ur like me. Ive been tested my enitre life(i have a writing disability and a few LDs *learning disabilities*) and i didnt know it untill about a month or 2 b4 i started college, but apparently they did an IQ test on me at some time and they told me at the college that im a genius, but because of my LD's i cant get it out. Writing and readin is what holds me back, but when it comes 2 practical work, vocal work, stuff like that, every thing comes easy for me. Yea, i could go into law or w/e, but i dont want to, i dont wanna b in a suit, ever. Im honestly like on the verge of just walking out of class one of these days. Todays class, we were talking about frame design for body over frame cars and unibody cars, we r talking about c-channels on lader frames, one of the guys in the back of the class puts up his hand and asks about what he should do about changin the floor in his buddies 89 honda civic hatch back...we r talkin about unibody design, it took them 40 f*ckin minutes to figure out where the A, B, C, and D, pillar are. I was the one who had 2 dumb it down enough for them 2 under stand, I said A pillar is where u mount ur 5" monster tach you dont need on ur automatic civic hatch, ur B pillar is where ur seat belt is bolted in, and ur C pillar is where ur hatch comes down. They got it right then n there. But i mean, i have to put up with crap like this every day..or worse. I was talking to a few of my friends today and they are even thinking of droping out cuz we cant put up with this crap/lack of teaching. I mean, i went for paint, our paint section of the shop isnt open yet/our paint booth isnt set up yet. The school got $1 million dollars over the summer to do renovations and get new machines, Its now almost end of october, they still arent finished, it was suppost 2 be done august 31st. Like im just gettin sick n tires of learning stuff i already know, puttin up with listenin 2 these kids in my class who dont know their ass from their hand, and not having enough or any equipment for training.

should you drop out? it depends

some specialized industries don't care about degrees but rather what kind of work you can do. I think automotive paint is one of those. if you know your stuff and can produce good work theres no reason to stay in classes where you aren't learning anything. however there is always room for improvement so consider working under a mentor whom you can learn from or finding a better/more challenging school.

as long as you are willing to improve and learn I don't see why you can't stop school for now .. if it doesn't work out for you just go back

edit: I should also say here in the US (or canada) there isn't such a huge stigma attached to 'dropping out' as some other countries. we are very lucky to live in a meritocracy for the most and I don't think a lot of people take advantage of it .. take risks, see where it gets you

see the thing is, im only at school for paint as backup kinda thing. I wanna go into general mechanics, and have body work/paint as a backup. Here in Canada, if you drop out, its not as big a deal as in the states. If its college or university its not 2 bad, but highschool every one thinks ur a failure. Here, if u have a background duing any thing trade wise, ur set. My neighbour graduated highschool and had a year of co-op at a plumbing place, hez now workin on his apprenticeship, got hired 4 days after we graduated. Jobs arent hard to find, if you have an indepth background and u drop out cuz ur bored/know what ur learnin, then u'll b fine to just go right into a job
