I just fixed my car's horn and am about ready to go from regular factory bulbs to LED bulbs all around the car. Every light will be replaced, except of course, the headlights, in which case I just upgraded to Nokya bulbs and harness. I'm a little confused when looking at the Sylvania Replacement Guide for my lights... There's a thing there that says "Map Light" and the bulb number is 293. I assume they're talking about the Dome light... I would need 2 bulbs. And if so, where can I find an LED 293? I checked autolumination.com and I didn't find anything. If there are no 293 LEDs, where can I find a 293 bulb in blue? Thanks...
EDIT: The light in the ash tray box is a 74, right? This post has been edited by JoKeRkId613: Nov 24, 2005 - 11:58 PM -------------------- ![]() |

Well this is good news to anyone looking to re-do their interior lighting 100%(like me. lol). I spoke to Chris from autolumination.com and he told me that the 293 bulb is equivalent to the Ba9 bulbs.
http://autolumination.com/otherleds.htm He said that the Matrix are the best. So I guess I'm going to go ahead and get 2 of those in blue. Should look good. This post has been edited by JoKeRkId613: Nov 25, 2005 - 11:48 AM -------------------- ![]() |

sorry for the noob question, but i seriously know nothing about lighting and LEDs and such, but if we buy these Ba9s would we have to do any modification to the dome housing to make these LEDs work? or could we just plug em in and go.

no modifications needed. as long as it's the same bulb type, it'll have the same base and should be plug and play. you can check Sylvania's Replacement Guide for the bulb types on your celica and just go to autolumination.com(this isnt the only place but they have good prices and if you talk to chris, he'll take care of you. cool guy.) and order the leds you want.

what i found works best for the dome light is a series of 3 leds and a resistor on perf-board inserted into a ba9 base. this way you can have all the leds point downward.
in total i've made 3 of these, and it can be sorta tedious to solder, but they put off allot more (usable) light than the matrix leds because none of them are pointed into the ceiling. for my ash-tray i had to modify a num74 led to face outwards at 90 degrees for it to provide a decent amount of light. ended up breaking the connection and having to re-solder it, but it works now. |

I was looking through your profile earlier. Can you really see the PRND2L lights? You did it with a 74, right? was it inverted LED or what type of light did you use? i've tried every prefabricated ba9 i could find for the dome light and the matrix one was useable. could be a good idea to order a few cheap ba9 bulbs as well so you could disasemble them to use the base in a custom light should you decide to try that route later. it's tedious but nice when it's done. it was a single num74 led in the automatic transmission. i haven't found 74's in anything but a standard "up-to-100-degree" lens. i had to file the front of the lens down allot for it to fit. it's plainly visible at night (not as bright as my gauge cluster easy to see). the neutral indicator is a blue green, still totally visible. but the reverse light is hardly visible at all (not that it matters soo much). if i were to modify that led to bend 90 degrees it'd probably be allot brighter. might be something i'll do a little later, but space restrictions in the auto-trans light are tougher than in the ashtray. |

There's actually 2 kinds of #74 bulbs on autolumination.com. The Clear Focused Lens, which is LED and the Incandescent ones. http://autolumination.com/74.htm . Which ones should I go with?

i'm a big fan of LEDs for the follwoing reasons.
durable, low power consumption per light emitted, very saturated color (LED blue is a hell-of-allot blue-er than incandescent with a blue filter), very long lifespan (for the LED itself, not neccessarily the other components in the circuit). that being said i have had some problems with a few of my leds recently. a guage cluster led (5led matrix) started to flicker on me after about 10 months. and the num74 i put in my auto transmission seems to have had a malfunction yesterday. as for the gauge cluster one i have no idea what could've gone wrong. the auto transmission one i had to file down a bit to get it to fit. and i also took the led out of it's housing and re-seated it, it seemed like this one had a resistor problem, which was possibly due to my re-seating the led in it's base. just took another num74 led, filed it down a ton (almost to the cathode) and installed it without re-seating it. hopefully this will last for the next 10 years. incandescent bulbs offer a few things too. at present, they can be brighter, it'll still be a while before we all light our houses with leds. and if you don't turn them on and off they can last a really long time (the longest running lightbulb in the world has been going for over 100 years i think). as for the automotive application, the only reason i can think of is that the toyota sockets are made to house them so the actual bulb can be simpler. where the led has to retro-fit an led and resistor into a num74 socket. though i could just be having a spell of bad luck, statistically it's probably all good, since i've replaced sooo many bulbs with leds and only had 2 failures. but, to be quite frank, i've gotten so addicted to how nice the led color is that i'll never go back to incandescents. btw - when inserting the auto-transmission light i accidentally dropped it. this is a bad thing because i totally don't know where it is (probably under my floor carpet, never to be seen again. so, uhh be careful of that. good luck |
