dude i have the kyb-gr2's and it did not take me long the rears are easy cuz its a replacment strut, but the fronts are drop in's so u have to un screw the strut. and be careful cuz when u break in open alot of strut oil is gonna run out, but u will need spring compressors, 2=1 spring, one on each side, the u gotta get ur car realligned.

I had to take the front gland nuts off with a hammer and chisel....worked nicely but a bit dodgey. Get the spring compressors off ebay I got mine for like $15 shipped.

Make sure you Celica didn't have the perfomance suspension option - KYB doesn't make struts that fit the front for that option - I found out the hard way

wile I dont reccomend it for safty, I took my stock spring off without a spring compressor, our springs are not under stress unless the car is on it, but it was not a safe thing to do, if I was rong it would have been messy (but yeah it just makes a quick little pop when you un screw it, and thats about it.)

I have never head of a "performance suspension" please update, and the frunts are just cartreges right how would it not fit, diff diamiter shock?

from what I recall, the performance suspension...doesn't have a removable nut so you can take out the cartridge. The normal struts have the nut which seals the housing.

is the difference between the normal and sport suspension just a sealed strut and a non-sealed strut? kyb's site has 2 for our cars. sealed and rebuildable

The difference on the kyb site is that the front is a cartridge IE rebuildable and the rears are a full strut ie not rebuildable. They don't make a second type for the front. And from the GTS's I have seen they have the rebuildables. Infact all GT's seem to the ST's have the one piece.

i just checked their site again and i'm pretty sure i'm not reading it wrong...
when i went to the catalogue and looked up celica. they had 2 rows for the 2 different suspensions

1 row for the 1994-1999 Celica(Exc. All-Trac)(w/ Rebuildable struts) <- regular suspension
and
1 row for the 1995-1999 Celica w/ Sealed Struts <- sports suspension

for the left hand drive celicas, the part #s are
1994-1999 Celica(Exc. All-Trac)(w/ Rebuildable struts)
F:365092 R:334126

1995-1999 Celica w/ Sealed Struts
F:334379 R:334126

the rear part #s are the same while the front is different. so doesn't this mean they DO make replacements for the sport suspension as well?

so i AM reading this right, rite? i needa make sure becuase if they do make replacements i guess i don't need to buy used front struts

i think only the sport suspension needs the whole replacement. normal ones can just use cartridges

but could you replace the whole strut, and wouldnt that be easier than taking it apart and replaceing catridges.

The difference between replacing the strut and replacing the cartridge inside the strut is one nut, albeit a big one, on the strut itself. Everything else is the same.

Further, struts cost more than cartidges, and I'm not sure if anyone makes a complete front strut for the Celica given they're supposed to be rebuildable. At least, I didn't find any when looking (not to say there aren't any).

the ST's ...are rebuildable which means u have to buy the sleeves and then take ur stock struts to a car place like wheel works to have them put in. It doesnt cost much and its done really quick. Along with the KYB's, they are really bumpy and it is not recommended. (Personal Experience)..

You dont need spring compressors...They are barely compressed once the car is jacked up. I just remove the top nut with the struts still in the car then take the rest loose. I can do front and rear struts in about 3hrs.

er... ok i'm still confused about the kyb struts and the performance suspension problem and just wanted to clear things up.

so the NORMAL KYB, the rears are the full strut housing while the normal front is just the insert? is this right?

now, the performance suspension. is the problem with the front that it's a sealed strut and KYB only makes inserts?

because if that is the problem... i was just at a shop (recommended by a lot of people in toronto) and they said both the front and back are full strut housings???

The front and back are full housings only on the ST which is way a lot of people use ST struts on a GT since they are the easier install. I am yet to see a GT with sealed struts. Easy way to tell is lift up the boot around the strut rod (the boot is in between the spring and the rod and is black plastic type stuff) and see if you can see a large flat silver plate over the strut housing. If so you got inserts, which I am like 99.9% certain you have otherwise KYB would tell you to check. Be warned that galnd nut is a bitch. I recommend hammer and chisel to get it off since KYB supplies a fresh one.

I recommend a vice grip and a long bar -- much safer for the strut body.

Not exactly the same, since it's an MR2 and uses rebuildable struts all around, but the setup is essentially the same.

I ordered KYB GR-2s for my Celi from Toyo House in P.R...and when I got them, the rear ones where GR-2s but the front ones just said KYB. I asked the guy and he said GR-2s don't come for the front...I had to reuse a part from the front ones. He told me to use some tranny oil to prevent them from bursting from friction. When I install them, I'll take lots of pics.
