Ok so Im going snowboarding for the 1st time this Friday. Im scared! Im going with Jason and he hasnt been for 2 years so he should be pretty close to where i am. I wanna go on the chairlifts that day so i need some pointers on how to get off! i dont wanna fall (i know it will happen)

And what do i need gear wise?

Im renting board and boots - though I want my own but no use in buying it before i try it!

I already have a Helly Hanson Jacket and a pimp snow hat! ;-)

Im going to buy
Pants
Goggles
Gloves

Anything else?

lol get on the beginners slope first biggrin.gif

just balance ur whole body out and relax...keep the knees bended a lil'. when getting off the lift just aim ur board straight and sliiiidddeeee off...then u'll most likely fall but it's all part of the learning process! biggrin.gif

i love snowboarding!

bboy

edit: u'll fall ALOT btw...but why do we fall? so we can learn to pick ourselves back up. laugh.gif

Alright, 12 years boarding, only took a lesson after 5 years (oh yeah, big mistake).

1st tip, gettin off the lift. Sit on the end of the lift. If you are goofy, the right, normal - the left.
2ndt tip, take a 1 hour semi-private lesson.
3rd tip, wear vollyball kneepads under your ski pants (you look like less of a wuss/newbie with them under your ski pants).
4th tip, never go on a bunny hill, go in intermediate hills. You need to be on edges, if you are not on edge, you are on the flat and will catch an edge (this is not a maybe, you will catch an edge if you ride your board flat).
5th tip, don't panic. Your fear will cause you to lean back, this will cause your edge to stick hard and you will not be able to slide out the back end of your board. If you lean more forward, you can slide out the back end of the board allowing you to scrub off speed slowing down, so don't panic.

Good luck, it's a blast.

btw, Vallo- I don't snowboard because it is cool, it is not a fad, it is not about fasion. When you have cut fresh tracks on the Rubybowl at Blackcomb, you will understand. A powder day is better than sex. biggrin.gif laugh.gif wink.gif

thats an understatement! ya you will be spending more time on you ass than your feet your first time

ya lessons are a good idea. i took lessons my whole first day on the slopes

first time i went, the first thing i remember was trying to stand on the board and was like "holy hell this is slippery!" stick with it though, theres nothing like finally having a run where you dont fall smile.gif also, stay as slow as you can and focus on staying up for first first 3 or so times you go boarding. i got pretty confident end of my fourth day on my first trip, picked up way too much speed for me to handle at the time, and crashed really hard. which reminds me, wear a helmet! i dont anymore to be honest but i sure was glad i had one on when i had that crash. stick on beginners slopes for now. moguls are hell, avoid them like the plague on a snowboard, i still hate those lol. dangerous, so just be careful and have fun! cant wait till finals are over!

forgot, number 5 is a big tip. you will have the urge to lean back, and you will for awhile until you learn the hard way to keep weight more forward. just keep your nerves in check (harder than it sounds at first) and just flow, and youll be fine.

ahhhhh fresh pow biggrin.gif i dont know if id go that far though wink.gif

you read freeze don't you?

Nat
I am a skiier but have tried snowboarding, don't go on small beginer slopes
snowboards seem to edge more if there isn't a harder slope.
Always remember real virgins bleed. laugh.gif
It's a lot of fun. Just swing ur back leg and pitch it to the inside you'll be fine.
Also liquid courage never hurts.

Indeed i do, well did. I thought the magazine went under a lil while back. Ive got one of thier magazines in my hand that says "The death of freeze" on it and it says its the last issue.

Two words: wrist braces.

You're going to either be landing on your backside or your hands (sometimes both at the same time) -- and it's no fun to break a wrist.

You will need a leash for your board or they will not let you on the lift. Attempt to stretch before you start, but it doesn't matter, the next day you will be so sore you won't want to move. How I taught myself was going up on a steep run, sitting down, and then when you stand up just try and stay almost parallel with the mountain. This will make going on the Heel (or toe, depending on which is most comforable) a whole lot easier and come naturally. If you want to move around from that point just put more force on the foot that you want to lead. Hope you have fun. Are you going to Snoqualmie or Crystal?

Hey Natalie, do you know if you're stance is Regular or Goofy?! If not here's a way to determine. If you were to by slightly pushed from behind which foot is the first to brace yourself? If it's the left then your a Regular (left foot forward on board and right legt is your trail leg), if it's your right then you're Goofy (right foot fwd and left foot is the trail leg).

The reason why I ask is because sometimes it helps determine where you should sit on the lift when your friend might have an opposite stance as you. That way you both won't be running into each other when getting off.

*Make sure your trail leg is unstrapped and out of the binding before getting onto the lift*

Tips for getting off the lift.

1. Be prepared. Usually at the last pole prior to the exit ramp scooch yourself slightly up towards the end of the chair and tip the front of your board up a little. You don't want that front tip to get caught and heavin forbid you fall off the lift. kindasad.gif

2. Use the pole, the edge of seat or the corner of the arm rest as a guide to push you off the lift as you exit. This will help stabilize you as you push yourself off the lift.

3. Use the track that usually paved for you to guide you off. Usually there's nothing you can do to avoid this because it's already usually carved in there from the previous boarders/skiiers.

4. Try to just HEAD STRAIGHT the first time. Within time you'll learn to manuever yourself to turn straight out of the exit ramp.

5. Don't be embarrassed. Everyone was a noob at one point. Falling is ok. Just make sure to get out of the way for the oncomimg people getting off the lifts.

GOOD LUCK NATALIE!! You'll be ok! smile.gif

i would strongly strongly strongly suggest you take a lesson. Ive been teaching snowboarding for 4 years and your first time will be a whole lot better if you shell out for a group lesson.

^ Tis true. You will learn a whole lot faster when you have someone telling you how to do it, rather than you falling and trying to learn. Just take an hour or two lesson.. I mean.. you have all day to snowboard.

Have fun. I've skated for 5 1/2 years and am sponsored by a skate company in Omaha NE. And i've snowboarded for 2 1/2 years if you can skate you can pretty much snowboard. But its very fun. You'll have a blast. Specially when you get better you'll be going off jumps that are 45 feet tall. smile.gif thats the best doing 360's and flips and s***. But you'll get to that point a while from now. hope you like it and have fun tho smile.gif

lmao can you do that? she'll get there after a looong while. hell it took me forever just to land a 360 for the first time, looks sooo much easier than it is. 45 feet, thats a good way to kill yourself if your not an expert. by the way i think skateboarding and snowboarding are worlds apart, i mean i can snowboard pretty good now after 4 years, but i cant skateboard for my life tongue.gif

Well if you skateboard its easier to snowboard if you snowboard its still gonna be hard to skateboard. its mostly about balance. Cause you have to have balance for both sports. And yes you can do it after a while and you get tought by the right person to get onto that big of a jump. But its all good.

I consider myself a pretty good skateboarder, and I figured that would really help me out when I learned how to snowboard.. but its completely different. In skateboarding you lean to move, but in snowboarding its more like your back foot is steering, so in all actuality snowboarding is most like surfing.

lmao, good luck, i been snowboarding for 8 years, so much fun, always the best teaching girls to haha u will fall a lot and u sometimes ull end up sliding down the mountain backwards, start at the top no begginner shyt cause the t bar lifts are almost impossible for the first 2 years hahaha, stay away from the pipe and dont wander to far into the glades, first times probly gonna hurt the day after but ull have a hell of a lot of fun,

im going snowboarding next weeekend, ANY EC6GCers wanna go???

either mt. snow, or okemo, or gore, maybe bellaire *new park*

also, skateboarding is the same as snowboarding, steer on back foot, its opposite of surfing haha

You don't steer with the back foot in skateboarding. Its all leaning and moving the ankles. Now if you're talking about kick-turning then that might be true, but take something like longboarding for example, since that is more like carving on a snowboard. It isn't the same, however it is still fun.

haha ok so we got there and hes like "lets go on the chairlift" and i was like uhh ok then of course i fall getting off..totally planted my face! then it took me till about half way thru the run to figure out how to get up and board about 30 ft till i fell. so i didnt wanna hold Jason back so I told him id go find out about lessons. Well turned out lessons werent available for 2 more hours so i sat in the lodge checking out the scenery (aka boys) then went to the car with jason for a bit to listen to some Fort Minor but we were having so much fun talking I wasnt going to take my lesson but i was like ahh i better go to it..so i go then they tell me my board wasnt waxed and id need to go get it waxed so i was like ahh screw this ill try again another time. So then i went and waited an hour for Jason then we left! Id like to go back up but i think next time ill go first thing in the morning nad take a private lesson till 12 then meet up with friend(s) and board with them in the afternoon! Im hoping to get my own board by mid january though! i think ill be more excited if i have my own board!

Did you go to Crystal or Snoqualmie? I have been looking for people to go boarding with up at Crystal, maybe us Washington gangstas should do a ski/snowboard meet.

ahh lessons, i remember those days, ur better off teaching urself, heres the run down of lessons..

1. show how to get off the chairlift *easy*
2. u ride down the mountain side to side *stopping on each side* to practice balancing
3. after learning to go side to side its time to learn how to stop, travel down about 20 ft. then practice stopping (toe side and heel side)
4. when thats done u should practice side to side to practice turning
5. when u can turn but its not soon (as in takes a while) practice untill you can carve (turning short distances)

thats pretty much it, its all about balance and practice, now go hit the park
