I was out in the shop today and I had this idea. I thought it might be cool....

I was thinking of having some people come up, someone with a good video camera and editing skills, and doing a monster garage-style engine swap race. Basically a 24 hour straight out engine swap, like start at 7 am and it has to be done by 7 am the next day. I'm thinking something like a 3SGTE swap into an ST, including all the wiring, front mount intercooler, EVERYTHING, in 24 hours straight. Maybe have a bunch of people up to hang out and goof off, whatever.

Then have someone edit the video, speed up parts of it, do some voice-over, and then put it out there on the internet.

Thoughts?

PS: This won't happen until late next year at the earliest.

ill donate my car. its a GT so it would also be a little easier. and i have some time to find parts and coordinate things. just let me know

heres what we do:

we use 2 celicas and have 2 teams (we split the teams up as evenly as possible). we have a full day to do the swap and add all of the extra goodies. The 2 teams can use whatever modifications that they want. then we race them the next day to see which one is faster (or to see which one will start for that matter, tongue.gif )

in all seriousness, there would have to be a lot of preperation to make this happen.

For example, all of the routine maintenance would have to done on the motor (rear main seal, timing belt, tensioners, good vac hoses, ect...), you would have to have ordered the hybrid clutch and have it ready for install, and have all of the IC piping, clamps, IC itself, ect.

with the correct preperation and tools it is very feasible to get the job done rather quickly.

Well I'm happy to see a good response. The competition idea is pretty cool, I would host that if my shop was bigger.

As far as all you guys who are talking about donating your car, who's really serious? You would still have to pay for the swap, but the labor would only be $500.

I would like to do an ST, but we could always do a GT now and an ST down the road....

i have not seen this mentioned yet . . .

who would pay for the engines?

also...it should be more than a 24hr competition . . . you want to do it right and not screw up . . . so i'd make it longer than 24hrs . . .

. . . i was thinking, someone like the speed channel might like doing a documentary on this? . . . they do like this kinda stuff . . . (building competitions) . . .

i'm seriously up for this if it goes down....but it defenitly could be done in under 24hours if you had a decently sized team (say 6 people) that each had knowledge

aka 1-2 people to do wiring

4 people to install, drop, swap

Hmmmm.....Doc, I've talked to you already in planning a swap for this up comming year, so maybe for times sake we could make it a GT vs. GT swapathon. smile.gif I'm totally in for something like this, I think its a great idea. So consider me a swap candidate in this battle. wink.gif

We should lay out some ground rules here and make sure we know what is involved in such an undertaking. But totally possible if we get enough hands to show up.

It should read something like....."6GC Presents....The First Annual Swapathon 2006". I think the idea kicks ass. Lets do it. laugh.gif

i would assume the motor drop would count as thats 1/4 of the work needed to be done...

but charging 500$ for free labor is just retarded.....i say the owner of the car must buy all the parts...and labor is free since well if your not paying the contestants then your just pocketing money for doing nothing and thats wrong....

umm whats the point in doing it in 24hrs? id rather take my time and do it right, instead of having something just thrown in there.

and like dustin said, you would really have to make sure you have a full check list of parts and **** ready cause normally its something small that creates the big hold ups.

No kidding, eh?

Well I think it's cool that there's so much interest. I ran it by my wife today (who's the realist among us), and she actually thought it would be a good idea.

Anyway, I think a lot of you missed the original point. The idea is for Phoenix Tuning to do a swap in 24 hours. I would need someone to bring their car up for the swap, to pay for the parts and labor (yes, $500 of MY LABOR), someone to run a good video camera, and several people to fool around and make it more fun. At least, that was the ORIGINAL idea.

This whole idea of having a competition is pretty cool too though. I would be interested in doing it, but it would take a lot more planning, and we would need a larger shop than mine, I think.

Let's take this one step at a time though. Who has a video camera and knows how to run it?

You're not very smart, are you? I suggest you go back and read my posts and try to think about what I'm saying.

THE ONLY PERSON WORKING ON THE CAR WOULD BE ME.

At least, that was the ORIGINAL idea. MY labor. So yes, I would not be working for free. Of course, now it's taken a different twist so we'll have to see how things develop... I'm working on a couple things here to make this possible.

I understand the Dr Tweak is doing everything, but even if it was him getting others to help him, and it being free labor. I think we should appreciate the oppertunity to learn something. That's how you learn things, from doing them. That's how colleges work.

Well the idea was more along the lines of having a big party at the shop with people keeping me pumped up all night as I bang out a swap in 24 hours straight... that sorta thing.
