I got the button to work but only when the key is in the ignition and turned to the ON position. Is there a way to wire it so that I don't the key at all? Also, how do I shut the engine off without using the key?

With out a key anyone could just take your car. Push a button and go, not a great idea. I know I'd take you car if I didnt need a key.
Keep the key -------------------- ![]() I will return one day. |

How about a starter kill with an alarm with a toggle switch for Off/ACC/ON?
Still not very secure, but it could work. -------------------- |

my alarm needs to be disarmed in order to start the car. so even if the window gets smashed and someone pushes the button, nothing will happen. The alarm needs to be disarmed. And if they can figure out how to disarm the alarm, they would probably know how to hot wire the thing anyways.

QUOTE(Cutrara @ Dec 15, 2005 - 7:18 PM) How about a starter kill with an alarm with a toggle switch for Off/ACC/ON? Still not very secure, but it could work. Toggles aren't good ideas because when you use a toggle a lot they wear out. If it's wears out, it it might flip on and of or short out. If it does this, that's really bad on the motor to have the ignition cut on and off wile driving. A buddy of mine had that set up in his truck and blew it up because of that. Well, his was carborated and when the ignition cut out the fuel was dumped into the motor and built up in the cylinder and when the car switched back on there was too much fuel in there and when it ignited it blew the motor. I'm not sure if this will be the same on fuel injection. But I wouldn't do it to my car. -------------------- Live Free, Be Happy

If you get a good-quality switch and use a couple relays you'll be fine. You'll need to wire a switch so that it opens the relay circuits which give power to the two ignition wires. Then it'll be like the car is on and it'll start without the key. You'll also need to give power to the accessory wire.
You'll also need to figure out how to disable the mechanism that locks the steering wheel when the key isn't in it. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

this is gonna take alot of rewiring because the alarm is tapped into the ignition and starter wires and there is a relay in the mix as well. Not to mention the relay that the push button uses itself. I'm confused

putting switches to the acc wires and such would be relativly easy. Also I would suggest removing the ignition cylinder completely for killing the wheel lock. When I was tearing apart my parts car I briefly looked how it all worked. I still haven't taken it out but I will once it gets warmer.
Feasible, yes. Do-able, I would say yes. Worth it, that's up to you. If you are good at taking things apart and wiring secure safe switches, then go for it. It would work just as it does now, but without any key to turn, just a switch or 2 to flip. -------------------- |

I've already taken apart 90% of the steering column. I disconnected the ignition switch to give myself better access to the wires. I just don't know which wires need to go where. Especially if there are relays involved.

im getting my push button wired up so that when u wanna start the car, u still gotta turn the key fully over like if it wasnt even there. U gotta turn it over, and push the button at the same time. You can even wire it up to do that and have to hit a toggel switch. My friend truck has it wired up so that you have to turn the battery on(battery kill switch), then a switch, then turn the key and hit the button.

my push start button is turn the key (click it twice) than push the button, i cut the wire so you can't start it with the key anymore just like the s2000.

ok, now im having trouble understanding why you would want to have a push button engine start if you have to have your key in... you can only look so cool in a celica...

I'm guessing a security feature. Most people wouldn't think to press the button and turn the key at the same time. It wouldn't be very secure though...our cars should be equipped with fuel-pump/starter/clutch-switch/ecu-power/whatever-else kills in order to make them hard to steal. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

QUOTE(kenjamatic @ Dec 16, 2005 - 10:15 PM) ![]() ![]() With the push button hooked up the way I did it, it's still hard to steal the car. You have to flip a switch to turn the ignition on, then depress the clutch and push the button. If the alarm is armed, and the switch is flipped, it trips the alarm and the siren goes off and the starter is disabled. Even after the siren stops (automatically after a few minutes) The alarm is still in the ARMED state thereby disabling the starter. The only way to steal it would be to get into the car (almost impossible without triggering the alarm) and FIND the actual alarm brain and the wire that disables the starter, and remove it from the equation. Then they could flip the switch and start it up. But if they are able to get that far, having the key instead of the button wouldnt matter much anyways. So there you go. I just told you how to steal my car. GOOD LUCK!! And if you're skilled enough to break in and steal it, just hope you're skilled enough to dodge a few .45 caliber bullets in the process ![]() BTW If someone wants your car bad enough, they will take it. No matter what kind of security you have. They can always just car jack you, LOL.
