i have a few questions about the psp.

what emulators can you run on it? snes, sega,etc?

if you buy one brand new, how do you know what firmware version is in the one you buy?

i hear that 1.5 is the one you want for all the emus. can u downgrade to 1.5 if you happen to get a higher version out of the box?

how long does the battery last on a single charge? im guessing its more then 2hrs since the sell movies for it.

if i have one with version 1.5 on it, will all the legit games run on it, or will some games require me to update to a newer version?

does the psp still come with a copy of spiderman2 umd?

can it play divx movies, or do you have to convert everything on your computer to a psp format before it can play it?

is there a web browser in version 1.5, or do u need to update the firmware for that?

are there any other cool things you can use it for , that i might not know about?

just get it man. its a fun game system. personally i wouldnt go with the homebrew games. even if u want to stick with the older firmware, games now and future games will require you to update it anyways.

battery lasts 4 hours for me. spiderman2 sucks ass so who cares if it comes with it.

the only cool thing would probably be location free tv. but ull need a $300 web transmitter at home and ur psp connected to a wifi.

well for me the whole idea behind getting it would be for emulators. i havent seen any games for it that i like so far.

i asked about spiderman2 because i want to know if it will come with some type of movie so that i can see the quality of umd movies. oh, and i thought spiderman2 was great. tongue.gif

if all u want to do is played emulated games, check out the zodiac2 from tapwave. its a media type pda (with touchscreen of course, but u cant use it on the emu games). i had that last year with over 300 snes, nes, genesis, and gameboy games. it should go for around 200 bucks on ebay.

the psp comes with a sampler umd that has music videos and movie trailers. personally i think the quality is great. for such a small size, it has really good detail and i didnt strain my eyes watching "team america" on it.

here i go:

QUOTE

snes, sega, gba, atari, gameboy, etc. there's also some for N64, playstation 1 & 2, and XBox but you'll have to look deep for those..

QUOTE

check the label on the box:

No Letter = 1.50 (North-American release) Confirmed
A = 1.50 Confirmed
B = 1.51 Confirmed
C = 1.52 Confirmed
D = 2.00 Unconfirmed
E = 2.00 Unconfirmed (Most likely 1.52)
F = 2.00 Confirmed
G = 2.01 Confirmed

most new ones will likely come with 1.52 or greater. but even so, you can downgrade from 2.00 using Fanjita's eBoot loader. info on this here.

QUOTE

this is all based on my personal experience:

for a game that requires constant "disc reading" about 4 hours. a game like NFS Underground plays upto 10 hours since it only reads when loading but doesn't when you're actually racing. This is probably the PSP's best power-saving feature.

i haven't actually tested playing a UMD movie from a full charge to empty but my guess is around 4 hours.

watching videos off a MemoryStick DUO would last about 10 hours approximately.

with wifi (wireless) on for RSS feeds (v2.60) or browsing the net (v2.00 and up), the battery would last approx. 6 hours.

QUOTE

most (if not all) games now will work with 1.50 on it. Sony wants people to update for the reason being that their newer games will only work AFTER an update to v2.0 and greater. this would allow better sales for PSP games since the Homebrew feature would no longer be available. although this hasn't been confirmed yet so you shouldn't worry about it.. it's probably nothing more than a scare..

QUOTE

most still come with the spiderman 2 movie and sampler disc, unless you get the giga pack version which includes a 1gb MS Duo instead of the standard 32MB stick.

you cannot play divx movies directly, it would have to be converted to MP4 first.
there's a program called PSP Video 9 that easily converts any .avi or .mpg video to .mp4.
video conversion is fully customizeable and easy to use.
you can select your resolution, bitrate (audio and video), recording audio volume, thumbnails (useful when giong through a list of movies on your PSP), etc. etc.
it also manages and transfers the videos on your PC and PSP.

you can also manage with Sony's PSP Media Manager. i don't have this yet, but will DEFINITELY be a must on my 'want-to-buy' list:

get it here. they retail for $24.95.

no, unless you get the Homebrew version of it. but Sony's browser is way easier and better to use but appears only in v2.00 and up. (but of course, you lose out on the homebrew features)

v2.60 now has RSS playing capability. which means you can download online playlists (www.webjay.com) and play 'em on your PSP wirelessly. this beats having to save MP3s on your DUO and take up valuable space. only bad thing about it is you have to be near a wireless router or wifi hotspot.

there is although a homebrew version but instead of customizeable playlists, they're online streaming radio stations.

v. 2.50 released LocationFREE TV capability. it's basically a wireless router that streams out audio/video signals to it's capable devices (like your PSP for one). so you can watch TV or anything you input to the base station and watch anywhere on your PSP. but of course, you're gonna need the base station itself which retails for about $349.99. more info here.

check out pspupdates.com for more info on the coolest homebrew applications out there. there are things like Sony TV and PS2 remote control (via InfraRed), GPS systems, FTP and IRC client, Portable VNC (wireless view and control your PC), FileManagers, schedulers, PSP-PDA and even a PSP-Windows and much more.

as newer versions come out, more cool features are continuously being released.... just remember, Sony did not make the PSP only to play games on the go... but they are directing the use of PSPs as an all-in-one portable entertainment device. now with the many cool features that the PSP already has, who knows what new updates Sony will bring....

after saying all this, hope this answers most questions to those who are still kind of leering about buying a PSP..
i've posted about this before, but it's probably the best $400 i've ever spent! just remember to get a large memory stick for storing MP3s, homebrew apps, movies, game saves, etc. because the 32mb stick just won't cut it.

...ok there, i'm done.
