I'm looking at buying 18"s rims, but Im worried about what sort of things I should be wary of. What is the driveability of 18"s like? Is safety an issue, ie. the lack of sidewall, expense and availability of decent tyres. Also, ride quality, will I really feel every bump in the road, etc? Am i better of going 17"s?

i had 18" rims on my car. the ride quality isnt that good b/c you have to use a low profile tire. i used 215x35x18 tires on my wheels and that definitely made me aware of potholes.

This is true^^^^ but you could go with 40's instead of 35, would help a little.
I have 18s, but now I think I want to sell them for 19s, cuz the 18s are starting to look small.

Also be careful if the wheel is too heavy. My buddy put 18" rims on his civic and lost 17HP to the ground.

My 18"s are the same mass as my old stock 16"s, and ride quality is acceptable. Turn in and stability are excellent.

Just gotta be careful with potholes. I would def. not recommend the 35mm tires as I hate mine.

yea 35mm is really annoying.

if you go for 40mm your overall diameter will be bigger and your speedometer will be off.

hmm.. it looks like I'll definitely have to rethink 18"s.. and I would be getting 215/35s, to keep my speedo accurate.

Bear in mind your stock speedo almost certainly overreads by 5-10%.

My 225/40R18s made the speedo more accurate.

My 18's don't mess with the speedo. My tires are the same height as my stock 15' tires are. And my speedo is perfect. I tested it with a cops radar.

I run 225/40/18's in the summer and they look great (imo) but on the track/strip/winter months run 16" rally slags and tbh the car feels alot better, with a much more progressive loss in traction, instilling more confidence on the limit. Car looks lost with the 16's on though frown.gif

if you're driving a stockk celica... power isn't an isue for you... atleast it shouldn't be or you're screwed regardless

Í got the 18's with 225/40 tires and I wouldn't change them for 17's. Lower profile is better handling atleast in my honour opinion.

Just so you guys know, the 35 and 40 readings for the sidewall height are not in MM. Those are in terms of percentage of the overall tire width. So a 215/35 tire is 215 MM wide with the sidewall height being 35% of that 215, or 75.25 MM. It's a common misconception.

Seriously, get 17's. You'll have more tire selection, cheaper prices, more rubber between the rim and road, better handling, etc. I have 18's and they look good, but I dread imperfections in the road.

somewhat OT: Im currently looking at some 18x 7.5 Konigs +45 offset
heres a pic of what they look like: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y296/hiep.../Picture004.jpg

Would the rim be good in my car? im thinking of getting some 215/40/18 tires for em.. what do you guys recommend? The deal for the wheels will probably leave soon Thanks Guys!

i just bought 17x8 rims and i put 225/45/17 on them. Get either 215 or 225 wide. I wouldnt go into 18's if its your daily driver, to many issues with potholes and crap, but your choice. Good luck
