Regarding the installation of the 3rd gen 3SGTE, does anybody know if the body harness is compatable at all with the ST204 chassis without rewiring the harness much? I've given this some thought lately after not finding any search results on the matter....so maybe?? Maybe not?
I think I'm holding off on a swap until I have enough money to buy all the components at once for times sake...but I'd like to have a 3SGTE with a W2A intercooler when I get my clip, be it the 3rd gen or 2nd gen RC. 3rd gen appeals to me because its something different, but this also means that I'd probably have to face alot more unknowns along the way. However, the wiring aspect may be an easier task because of the chassis it came from. Any knowledge or insight on the wiring is appreciated. ![]() -------------------- 3rd gen ST205 3SGTE - Alive and boosting. |

I think the 3rd gen harness would be easier to use with the 6th Gen car, but either one will work with enough modification. I just installed a 3rd gen 3S into a 6th gen ST, here are my experiences:
The fuse box portion of the engine harness matched up nearly perfectly with my cars fuse box. Only needed to pull one wire/sensor (radiator fan temp sensor switch) from the ST's wiring to add to the 3S wiring - The ST's temp sensor switch is on the coolant elbow, the 3S's temp sensor switch in the radiator. I had to move/remove a couple of wires from dash harness connectors to match the JDM harness. 90% of the wires were the same - removed the 2nd O2 sensor wiring (not needed) and a couple other things (I would have to look at my notes). Overall, it was really easy. -------------------- Scott

Very cool, thanks Scothaniel. I appreciate the input.
Do you have any pictures of your setup? I'd love to see it. -------------------- 3rd gen ST205 3SGTE - Alive and boosting. |

In the engine bay, which plug in the fuse box was it that needed to be rewired; at the ECU, did you have to rewire 3rd ECU plug.

i wish i could see a 3rd gen harness in person to compare it to a 2nd gen one. it shares the same fusebox, unlike the 2nd gen, so thats a major headache you dont need to deal with . 3 the interrior plugs might be a little different tho, because your gauge cluster donst have stuff like the oem boost gauge.
i think if you got a whole clip, then worst comes to worst, you can swap out all the wiring inside the car as well as the engine if you have some issues. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

right it wouldn't have the boost gauge cuz i did that exact same swap , kinda was a pin but it worked out ok

QUOTE In the engine bay, which plug in the fuse box was it that needed to be rewired The engine harness has only one plug at the fuse box (for the 6th gen Celica's) - EA1. And I just had to add one wire from the old 7A harness to this pug for radiator temp switch. Both 3rd gen 3S engine harnesses (turbo and non-tubo) will be missing the radiator fan temp switch wire, since its in the body harness for those cars. If the 5SFE has the temp switch in the radiator, then you wont have to worry about this wire. QUOTE at the ECU, did you have to rewire 3rd ECU plug 3rd plug being the one with the injectors, or the one with battery and power? I used a 3SGTE ECU with a 3SGT harness, so I had a bit more re-pinning then usual. For the GTE, there will be a couple of changes for the fuel pump, since the US cars didnt have an relay for high/low pressure. QUOTE the interrior plugs might be a little different tho, because your gauge cluster donst have stuff like the oem boost gauge. I think I removed 4 wires from the interior plugs (II1, II2, IJ1) to mate up to the 3SGE harness. A couple of the wires were due to the options on my car (no ABS, Cali-emissions, etc). I've used the ST185 engine harness on the ST205 motor in my all-trac and it only required moving a few pins on the ECU and a couple of connectors around on the harness. Should be the exact same for installing an ST185 motor into a 6th gen using the ST205 harness. This post has been edited by scothaniel: Jan 19, 2006 - 10:33 AM -------------------- Scott
