Hey i just now got home from picking up my 4A-ge its the 16 valve, i wish i could have gotten the 20v but hey i just about stole this motor, i got it for $75 bucks,
it only has 25,000 miles, its a japan spec 4a-ge. What could i put on it to make it about as fast as the 20v ![]() ![]() Please dont rag on me for being the 16valve, i kinda wanted to be original This post has been edited by 94STcoupeKyle: Jan 31, 2006 - 9:00 PM -------------------- ![]() |

That motor sound be pretty simple to turbo, if you like that root. Otherwise, stay true to the NA crowd and you could have a real high rpm running machine. Either way, that thing has high potiental. Check 4aclub.com, I think that's the site. They'll have all the info you need to turn that into a real motor.

the guy gave me the receipt where he baught it like 2 months ago and he wrecked his mr2, its garanteed from the company so thats good!
Yea it was an awsome find. He payed $550 for it. Is it better to Boost this than my 7a thats in there now? The only hard part for me will be the wiring harness -------------------- ![]() |

That is a smallport 4AGE... high compression (10:3:1) with no TVIS. It's the best 16V 4AGE imo... and you got a killer deal assuming the engine is in good condition. It does have really fat rods cause it shares the same internals as the 4AGZE... except it has high comp pistons, which make it bad for boost. It is a much stronger engine than the 7AFE and with the right pistons... those rods can take some abuse (upwards of 9000 rpms and/or 15-20 psi boost)...
You are missing a lot of things though... you're gonna need another TPS, a Distributor, coil and ignitior, wiring harness, ecu, afm or MAP and IAT depending on which ecu/wiring you use... etc. I think I do have a MAP coil and MAP distributor for that motor... but talk to tweak on what you wanna do regarding wiring... -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... Wow, a smallport! You got a really good deal there. Interesting... I just noticed that the crank pulley is the same as the 20v version. Anyway, there is a ton of stuff missing as far as the engine management... you might want to give some serious consideration to either modifying the 7A ECU and harness to run it, or go with a megasquirt setup.

I vote megasquirt. This would be awsome to see it go in with some real power for a total under $2K.

QUOTE(94STcoupeKyle @ Jan 31, 2006 - 12:58 PM) Thanks Doc, How many people have smallports on this website? what is this motor worth? I don't think anyone has a smallport on this site... at least not in a celica. I've had a built one in my AE86, and an 90 AE92... so I'm the only one. http://www.hachiroku.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10451 Email this guy if you decide to go with stock parts. He has a FULL MAP set-up from a Geo Prizm GSI, which also had this engine. Expect to pay at least 300-500 dollars for the whole she-bang though... but email him and ask. After you get that harness and ecu... send it off to tweak to wire it up for you... or you can take a stab at it. Megasquirt will work also... but it's not for the average tuner or a first timer... -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

ok i just checked that stuff out and it looks pretty good, thanks for the info.
How much Boost will my Smallport 4a-ge hold stock? and with a cold air intake, catback exhaust, and the maximum boost what do you think the HP would be? -------------------- ![]() |

QUOTE(94STcoupeKyle @ Feb 1, 2006 - 2:45 AM) How much difference is between the smallport and the bigport? like the HP and internals? There were two versions of the bigport... the 7rib block version and 3rib block version. The later (87.5-89) had the 7 rib blocks with 42mm rod journals as opposed to the older bigports with 3 rib blocks and 40mm rod journals. The newer big internal versions also used different piston pins, which were full float with clips as opposed to the older ones which used 18mm press fit piston pins. The older "smaller" internal versions aren't as strong as the much more stout "big" internal versions. I wish I can find pictures of the rods side by side to show the significant differences in size and strength... however, the side effect of the "big" internal version of the bigport engine was that it made less power because of the added weight of its moving parts. The good thing about it, was it was a hell of a lot stronger than the small internal version. The reason this engine was called "BIGPORT" is because of the intake design and the head's ports. Bigports used TVIS, which were a series of butterflys built into the intake manifold designed to increase intake velocity and in turn, increase low-end torque. Smallports, which came much later (1990+) eliminated this system. Bigports made anywhere from 112-127 hp depending on which ecu and metering system is used. Mechanically speaking... there is no difference between the motors besides the big and small internals. The heads, compression, etc, were all identical. Smallports are just that... they have smaller intake ports and were designed to eliminate TVIS. Because TVIS was eliminated, they do have slightly less grunt in the low-end, but make up for it with a superior port design and higher compression. Smallports had the 7rib "big" internal block with high compression pistons (10:3:1). That's pretty much it as far as differences go. The rest is pretty much the same as the bigport. Smallports made about the same amount of torque as the bigport, however on a very different curve. They however, made more horsepower... between 130-140 depending on the ECU and metering system (MAP or AFM). Don't know which Japanese spec cars had these motors... but here in the US... 1990-1991 AE92 Corolla GTS's had them, and Geo Prizm GSI (1990-1992) had them. Probably something in the realy 90's... cause Silvertop 20V's replaced most 16V's by 1992-1993... -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

The engines are all mechanically the same. What's different was the ECU and wiring. Japan go MAP sensored just about everything while we in the States and elsewhere got AFM's. We also had other things like EGR, extra emission related sensors and whatnot. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"
