Gooooooooooogle:
Some highlights from the article on the 1MZ-FE: :: 200 - 225 hp, 204 - 209 lb-ft torque, 3.0 V6 :: Found in 94 & up Camry & ES300, and later in Solara & Sienna :: 10:4:1 compression :: Similar in weight and size with 3S-GTE :: Price (Junkyard) around $1500-2000 :: Available TRD bolt on Eaton supercharger kit good for an additional 62 hp. Edit: So, you're looking at about the same HP and a bit more torque when compared to a 2nd gen 3S-GTE. Throw on the supercharger and you'll out run just about any 3S (except for people like Gary lol). This post has been edited by Cutrara: Feb 20, 2006 - 1:00 PM -------------------- |

I worry about putting another engine in my car that ends in "fe." How could you rev this thing? Would it be better for everyday use, but not as good on the track as a 3sgte? Even though it has the higher displacement, I'd still rather go with a 3sgte. Do they make parts to really build this v6 up to high hp marks? Something around 500hp.

I think 500 HP is an unrealistic goal. You said yourself, it's an "FE" engine. IMO, the heads just aren't designed to support 500 HP. Even if they were, Imagine the kind of forced induction you'd need, somewhere north of 20 psi which means forged internals. Injectors, standalone ecu, and the list goes on.
How would you go about getting all this power to the ground? Even if you used the MR2 LSD tranny (E153?), that's still 500 HP going to 2 wheels. Edit for JFrost: I'm home today, don't you guys have off for presidents day? Yeah, they are pretty reliable, NA rocks. I'd love to have this swap, but I don't have the means for it. well even then, i wouldnt really want 500 hp... maybe in the 3-4 hundred range... which i think i could obtain with either the 3s or the 1m.
Edit: and no we dont get off for Presidents day... we get other random days off, but for some reason we dont get a federal holiday off. Yeah, just as different generations of the 3S have different specs, the same should be true for the 1MZ. Although I base this on nothing, I just found those specs on the net.
Off the top of my head the 3rd gen has about what? 245 HP in the JDM form? 225 HP block+theoretical 62 HP SC adds up to 287 HP. So based on HP, the 1MZ would beat the 3rd gen 3S. QUOTE well even then, i wouldnt really want 500 hp... maybe in the 3-4 hundred range... which i think i could obtain with either the 3s or the 1m. EXACTLY what I had saying. 500 HP would make it incredibly hard to drive. This post has been edited by Cutrara: Feb 20, 2006 - 1:49 PM -------------------- |

But it would probably be expensive for the engine set. I don't know the generations for the 1MZ like I know the 3S gens, but you'd probably be better off finding the same generation 1MZ with a bit more milage in a vehicle that may be a few years older. -------------------- |

correct me if im wrong but I dont think they made a SC for the 3.3L (225HP)
the best i can find is the SC for 99-02 Solara (3.0L 200hp) ~263hp would be very good though..but expensive since the SC isnt cheap This post has been edited by HaRv3sTeR: Feb 20, 2006 - 2:13 PM |

Yeah, I know it's the "fe" head, which means it would take something serious to get it that high. But if you go by liter, Manny has about 250hp for 2.2, so from a 3.0, you could expect some like 350 reasonably. But, everyone knows it doesn't always work out that way. But the reason I ask about 500hp, is because the way I think, if you can push a motor to 500hp, then lower numbers are possable and reasonable. For example the guy with the 3sgte in the mr2 thats something like 800hp. That makes me think that 400hp could be obtained reasonably. So, 250-300hp out of the 1mzfe should be okay if they are capable of 500hp. That isn't the best reasoning either, but it's how I work. -------------------- Live Free, Be Happy

doc, what's ur oppinion on the 3mz-fe?
i know in theory it's feasble but what i'm wondering about putting that U151-E (5spd auto) or weither it's possible to trick the stock ECU in the case one would choose to put the E153 instead. -------------------- ----------------------6GC's FIRST V6----------------------

There are a few other expensives.
I would reccomend a nice stage 2 clutch, Light weight flywheel, LSD for SURE! torque steer is crazy. Unless Tweak can somehow confirm this, you will have to have a aftermarket tach, because the ECU's read different Ohm levels, so you might have a reading, but it wont be correct. Other then that I think tweak covered everything, I think he probley knows more about the swap then me, But I know a decent amount. Tweak you also take into account the time/money expensive into the 4th motor mount? DTE -------------------- I am a thief.

behindthesmile, i think if you have a GT then the motor mounts will line up...Im not sure though. Im still tryin to find a reason why i would want to swap in the 1mzfe over the 3sgte.

"Not this one... (VROOOOM VROOOOM)" 3rd gen 3sgte is 225, you know that. And you can't include the 270 sc, unless you take into account upgrading the turbo on the 3sgte. The 4 banger, and engine sound thing, are the only advantages I see. I think the 3sgte is more of a proven power plant over the 1mzfe. More info too. And it's made for the Celica. But that makes the 1mzfe more original. You what else would be original? A b-series motor in a Celica. -------------------- Live Free, Be Happy

Wow, three pages! I'm glad this topic has generated some interest
I'm planning on moving down to SC for May, but I'll keep everyone updated. Either way I'm going fulltime in the shop soon. The 4th mount will most likely but custom, but I'll have to try it before I know. I think the other Camry V6 engines are feasible as well though they will probably present different challenges. -Doc -------------------- -Dr Tweak, 6GC's resident engine swap wiring expert extraordinaire Click here to see my swaps drtweak@phoenixtuning.com |

I personally wouldn't bother with the older VZ series motors... those things are pretty nightmarish when it comes to the heads and the power output isn't spectacular... so stick with the 1MZ. That's the best reasonably swappable V6. The 3MZ is a viable option also, considering it's the exactly same thing as the 1mz except it's bored out... but it's just a load more expensive...

I dont know about yours or others, but mine has a return line on the fuel rails Radiatior hose's thats a givin, but GT/ST rad might be easyer, I was just gonna wing it with my ST's -wiring, have fun, lol DOUBLE! The front motor mount was the one that needs to be made, as I was told by my buddy with mr6 -EVAP system needs to be rigged to avoid CELs, yep For anyone looking for a engine/harness/ECU hunt for the manual it will make things easyer in the end I dont know about modding the tach, didnt much care sense I have a Autometer C2 Tach, but im sure its something that needs to be covered. ^ Fuel Pump LSD all that other little crap It is to my understanding that 1mz/3mz dont put out over 230hp stock, but I havent done alot of reserech most people say look into it and read, I was just mainly gonna peice it together, my local shop has done many v6 swaps into mr2's and he told me that he would help me finish it up. I was gonna look down the line at boosting mine via turbo, but considering I have to find another 6gc now my whole v6 project and all of that is being pushed back, so I wont be able to give anything but my knowledge for now. I look at it, basicly anyway your gonna go with your celica your gonna be spending a good chunk of change, if you want a proven power house dont bother with this v6, go 3sgte, but the v6 will be something different a new playing feild persay, the SC add on looks rather disapointing, but a custom turbo setup, mabey some nitrous could be rather deadly setup. now the 5vz would be swap, someone's gotta try it! i could be wrong but....i believe the solara drag cars us the 1mz....and i also believe a few of those hold tack records.....i dont think that its not a reliable or even a feasable power plant...i just believe it hasnt been done enough for anyone to really know all of the possibilities of the engine....i think as far as price goes ....it might be a little out of the range of most people...but if you can do the work yourself...it might cut the price down somewhat....i know here in town i can pic one of these engines up for like $300-500...which to me is a hell of a lot cheaper...and considering we have a fairly large mr2 group here as well the lsd wont be hard to pick up either....my questions are: what all trannys will bolt up to this engine....and what do the mr2 guys think of this swap...are they satisfied with the results they've gotten from this engine..if so.. it might be worth giving it a shot.

i'm really hoping the 3MZ (or a late 1mz (04+)) is a possibility, but i can forsee that i will have a hard time finding an engine for a worthy price. The fitment of the 5spd auto is unknown and the ECU might or might not be able to be tricked with a E153, among other things that one would discover when attempting this.
clipstuner, i believe the auto ECU can be tricked, this would make finding the required parts much easier since there are few 5spd 1mz cars. source Bedell racing QUOTE How to I trick an Auto ECU into working?
* Use (10 ohm?) 25 watt resistors pulled to ground to fool the ECU into thinking the solenoids are present. Adrian determined in his V6 Celica that the ECU seems to be the same for Manual/Auto. It is simply a matter of grounding the correct ECU pins (see below), so that resistors may not be necessary. Using the factory wiring diagrams. + You will need to modify the wiring of the Heated A/F Sensors so that they are grounded to the chassis, not Via the ECU, as the ECU uses different ground connections. Some labeled a/t some m/t on the diagrams. Exclude all A/t conections, and make all M/t connections to the ECU. + These wires also include the Clutch start switch on the manual, and neutral start switch on the automatic. Effectively, this changes the ECU's logic to that of a Manual transmission set-up. -------------------- ----------------------6GC's FIRST V6----------------------

hey,
just in case anyone is interested i will have a hybrid 1mz/3mz available soon .. (SOLD !!) i have a 1mz (vvti) and a 3mz both with less than 2200 miles on them.. 3mz is missing some parts but 98% of 1mz vvti swaps over to 3mz .. it will have 3mz block and internals (which can be bored to make a 3.5l) and 3mz heads (100% identical to 1mz except for softer valve springs ) with vvti intake and ecu .. have all these parts for it as well manifolds lower mainfold and cat (from v6 solara , help make a custom set up ) map sensor / charcoal canister from rear of lexus es300 (on non vvti it is in engine bay) tach from solara (bolts in to guage cluster ) (not the face just the tach unit ) clutchmasters clutch fidanza v6 flywheel (never used ) tons of misc parts This swap is really easy compared to a lot of other swaps but still not recommended for a first swap. use the same mounts as 3sgte once in just fab up pass side mount adapter to mate up with pass side .. use oem lower manifold to see what mods need to be done clear rear crossmemeber use same axles as 3sgte swap also will need to mod rear intermediate shaft to work with bearing carrier (see mr2oc) will need to work out radiator issue as i believe it is oppisite on v6 compared to 5sfe camry unit might work. 60% of swap will be getting wiring worked out .. just take time and do homework .. i have done more swaps than i can count but never a 1mz swap .. i have had all the parts for a mr2 swap for years just never had time to finish . i seriously thought about keeping 3mz and doing a twin turbo v6 set up in my st205 but with a lot less time and money i can make over 300hp no sweat with 3sgte .. besides i am sure i would have been asked why i jacked with st205 so i will stay with orginal motor .. anyone interested in motor i am in cincinnati area .. will ship anywhere in US ... good luck swappers ...!! There was talk of the rear ex manifolds hitting the firewall in an ST18# set up. The rear cylinder bank will not clear the rear drive shaft either. Maybe using a Highlander/rx300/Sienna v6 set up ? I'm really more interested in the 5vz motor. I have one in my 4runner and with intake and exhaust I can still smoke my 22's. Plus I know alot can be done with it. TRD SC, upgrades for that. reliable 350 HP. plus it sounds so nice, I've got Quad custom exhaust, and it's so muscular. I know alot of guys that swap out their 3vz's for 5vz in The Taco's and 4runners, so if the 3vz fits the celica I'm thinking the 5vz will too.

So Dr Tweak your saying that the V6 that I am going to swap out of my truck for a V8 will work in a celica? Wouldn't it have to be a rear wheel drive? Could I use AWD? When I do the V8 swap I am planing on changing everything so all of the parts would be there. This would be interesting because that engine is a monster like coldbluesteel said. I have 33" tires on my truck and I can light them up with little effort. My wife might not like you guys geting me on this road of thinking though.

well I wanted to hold off until I had it perfected before I made an official anouncement but I guess it's just too much to hide.
Yes, I have the first running V6 and use it everyday. I didn't quite "finish" it as I would like to, some things are still getho looking and I have a few bugs to work out. I need to rework some of the exhaust, mainly in the header piping (also working on a model for a set of custom headers), make myself a custom strut bar, get myself some ss radiator hoses. I do have a check engine light on but the car runs fine. Once I get everything straigthen out, I will make a post with all the information needed to help make this swap. I don't have picts of my setup at this moment and honestly I wouldn't want to show it to everyone because its a MESS. Here's my setup: 04 Sienna 3MZFE & ECU -150amp Alternator -Solara power steering (sienna pump doesn't fit) -Toyota Matrix K&N intake (thats right, a Matrix intake fits) -Fidanza Flywheel -3SGTE clutch 01 Solara E153 Transmission -Alltrac rear and driver side mount, GT front mount -GT-FOUR shifter cables -MR2 turbo (non LSD) inner axles -Solara axle carrier -ST185 outter axles (with abs cause I have it) -ST185 speed sensor Others: 04 Sienna Immobilizer 04 Sienna Returnless Fuel pump and regulator 03 Echo charcoal canister (aka EVAP box) 01 Camry check fill valve -------------------- ----------------------6GC's FIRST V6----------------------

QUOTE(behindthesmile @ Aug 27, 2006 - 7:00 PM) sweet let me know how everything turns out after you cleaned out the bugs and how much everything cost in the end One thing I can say for sure, the V6 swap is much easier (not easy, just easier) than anyone would have expected. Wiring isn't as bad as we all thought, mechanicaly the motor almost bolts on. The only custom fab needed is the passenger side motor mount, and creative exhaust work. Annother thing I should mention is that the stock strut bar had to go (in my case). It fits but it's cleary in the way of the engine when it rocks back and forth. ![]() The V6 swap has MANY options for configuration you have, the 1MZFE, 3MZFE, 3VZFE, 5VZFE, possibly the 2GRFE all of which bolts on to either the GT tranny or the E153 Complications begin when swaping out the tranny for a E153, that was hard. The parts list grew The GT tranny works and would work ok but it has too short gearing for the V6, also sticking with GT tranny (for the GT people) will also slash cost in almost half. It's all about what you want and how much you're willing to spend. What was the hardest part of this entire swap? Gathering parts ! This swap needed alot of parts, much less if you're keeping the GT tranny. When I think about it, alot of it was not nessesary but was a good thing to have. I can see many more V6 swaps being done now that the ice is broken. I can provide crutial information for next swaps to come and so will snapshot when *sensored* does his. It will become a mainstream swap because it is the ideal swap for a daily driven Celica. edit: I promised snap not to say who was going to do his swap This post has been edited by K-ESD: Aug 28, 2006 - 5:50 AM -------------------- ----------------------6GC's FIRST V6----------------------

Wow, first V6 Celica is finally done. I've been pushing and pushing this swap for so long now, I can't beleive that it's finally done. I'm very happy about that, but I'm very sad that I wasn't the one to finally present it, after all the time I've put into this project. Such is life I guess. So K-ESD, what are your impressions on the driving aspect?

QUOTE(Dr_Tweak @ Aug 28, 2006 - 9:52 AM) So K-ESD, what are your impressions on the driving aspect? two words... ----> wheel spin I need bigger tires !!! (running 195/55/15's right now, good tires that came with rims for cheap) It's very easy to break traction. I have to be very careful on the throttle. but on a daily driving aspect, it's the best thing i've ever driven. The acceleration is so smooth, it feels like your getting pulled by a turbine. The Solara transmission shifts very very smoothly, like cutting through butter. It drives just like a brand new car, well after all I do have a motor with 16k kms and a trans with 60k kms. (try to get a 3SGTE localy with that many kms for $750 cnd Handling is not affected at all, not that I can notice. From carrying the two motors around, it feels like the 5SFE and the 3MZFE are about the same weight. When I do gun it, after I get that wheel spin under control, it pulls like crazy (if I don't break loose again). I find myself shifting through gears very fast. The torque is just always there, in 5th gear I stomp on it and it MOVES up fast, no bogging like the 5SFE. It's an amazing engine, as good as in my dreams....maybe even better also, i get better gas mileage than my 5SFE when babied. -------------------- ----------------------6GC's FIRST V6----------------------

I realize this is an old thread I felt compelled to comment
Now days those 1mz's are everywhere, from my perspective it is the perfect swap. its lighter than a 3sgte, produces as much in all catagories and the biggest positive is that it should be easy to get BAR'd in cali because they are all newer than my car (1992 st184) I located an E52, I'll be working toward swapping that soon. I'm still piecing together info on what this swap requires in a 5th gen body and the main issue: what needs to change with the wiring. oh and this is proof that the MZ v6 is stout and capable http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNWbZ53_CZo |
