bah it seems like every car is to 'blah' (for lack of better workds) for me. I looked into the STI (and its still my main choice atm) but for $32k I cant really do much mods to it. I started looking into the rx7's which sounded pretty cool for a moment until I started doing more research and found out they only last for about 50k miles then the engine blows. Supra, to expensive and now im just lookin for a newcar thats kinda rare and fun to drive. Any ideas?

I just have to comment on that RX-7 part. The rotary engine doesn't blow after 50k miles. That's not true at all. A rotary engine can last atleast 100k miles and then it should get a rebuild. If you take good care of the engine it will last long.

Don't go racing around without the engine heating up first. Make sure you have proper cooling before doing anything stupid. Don't up the boost without doing any prerequisites. Don't just race around and then suddently shut off the engine without letting it cool down 1-2 minutes first. Don't drive around hitting the rev limit (around 9000rpm) for 2 months and then blaming it on the engine.

I'm sure that a well taken care of rotary engine can last 150k miles too.. Before needed any special treatment. Of course you will have to change the oil and do regular tune ups like on any vehicle.

It'a a high rpm engine. It's a turbo engine. End of story.

Any high rpm turbo engine will need proper care and maintenance. It's nothing special about the rotary.

actually after somewhat of 30K miles, the engine needs a rebuild to replace this one part inside the engine that the motor brushes against. Its a pain and yes its not easy.

that might be valid if it was a new car but RX-7 being such old cars, and no way of knowing the proper maintenance history, I'd be on his side to be careful about them...

Btw a RB swap in a 98 240SX could be something you like...fun to drive and rare. relatively speaking.

Mine was N/A, I drove it like a bat out of hell, the guy before me drove it like a bat out of hell, and I almost got 140k out of it before the seals went. I imagine, had it been turbo, that it would've gone a lot sooner.

Sorry, but "like a bat out of hell". Does that mean nice and decent driving? Or really hard driving? I can't really relate to that sentence..

I had an rx-7 na as well. I drove it hard, but I didn't drive it much. It was a piece of junk. It wasn't because of the brand, it was just beat almost to death before I got it. I wouldn't mind having one in good shape to play with. A nice 1st gen with the 13b. The 84-85 GLX's, I think. Mine was a 2nd gen with the 13B.

So driving an RX-7 hard for 140k miles is what takes to break them.. I wouldn't worry too much then. I have another 110k miles left (and I'm not gonna drive it hard). So probably even more. Or about the same, as mine is twin turbo and will wear and tear a bit faster.

But rotary engines isn't all that bad that people think they are. I wouldn't say breaking down after 140k miles of 'spirited driving' is bad. Rebuild with new seals and some other stuff.. And you have another 140k miles.

That's not a good enough reason to not get the car IMO.

I don't think I think the same way as you. You say just rebuilt the engine ever X miles, well an engine that needs a rebuilt in my book means dead engine. And an engine that needs rebuilt at 120 000 miles is a short lived engine compared to piston engine standards that can go for 180 000 miles and more without getting open! Fact is alot of FD3s for sale sports a new engine, they are more fragile than pistons and previous generation RX7s.

i dont know what your budget is exactly, but instead of an sti for 32k id MUCH rather get a new is250. or save a little more and get the is350 biggrin.gif. just saw one driving for the first time the other day. drrroooooll. one of the best looking new cars in a long time in my opinion. these arent as quick as sti (the 250 at least), but look so much better. here is base msrp for each.

30580 is250 rwd manual
31750 is250 rwd
34875 is250 awd
36030 is350 rwd

and some pics to help convince you smile.gif

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.
