hey guys, i just wanted to piggyback off of mike's very useful thread about paintjobs. i ve been meaning to post this question, as im sure many others have.
questions to ask the shop... 1. what are good paint brands? 2. are there any specific painting techniques you should request at a paint shop? 3. what different types of painting styles are there available? it would be nice for everyone to post comments or questions they would ask before getting their car paitned along with answers if possible! it would be a great help! by the way...does anyone know what integrated gloss is? my friend says its just enamel with the gloss included in it. is that any good? or should i just look to pay extra for more clear coat? thanx! -------------------- |

HOK (House of Kolor), PPG...these are my two favorites. as for different types.....you have one step - acrylic urothane (sp), basically base no clear. and then you have the typical base coat clear coat system which takes about 3-4 step paint system.
this is the primer, base, flake or pearl (optional), and clear |

PPG makes awesome paint. You can't really request the shop to paint it with a certain "style" because everybody sprays more less the same. They can spray it on there in a few thick coats or a bunch of thin coats, but that's about the extent of it. Every painter strives for the same thing, smooth and even coats with few or no runs. That's it.
As celicagurl mentioned, there are a couple of different kinds of paint. Base with clear topcoat and the single acrylic coat. The only one that looks good is a base/clear paint. It costs more, but you get what you pay for. The integrated gloss will have no depth and will have a sheen, but won't be shiny. Metal flake and pearl are expensive to mix with paint but add another dimension to it. My car has an insane amount of pearl in the paint and changes from almost maroon to kind of a "hot" orange. Look at the pics in my profile and how almost every part of the car is a different shade because of the angle. It's not as easy to appreciate it in pics, you just have to see it in person. ah! i remember seeing you car on other posts! very nice! see my thing about paint jobs is, while im not a cheap skate, i do understand that knicks and scratches occur (mine is a daily driver) and I DESPERATELY need a paint job, but i dont want to pay 1,000$ for a paint job just to get it scratched later. being careful is a big part of preventing this but i still dont think that much money for a paint job isnt worth it. my brother knows a painter at a place called econo and they said they would paint my car (2 toned top black bottom eletric pearl green by dupont paint) for like $480 it so happens that they painted my roomies SUV and it looks pretty nice, but people say i shouldnt trust a 500 dollar paint job (not that i care) im more worried about covering up the ugly peeling clear coat i have now a.s.a.p.

Some people can actually lay down a good coat of paint, but, prep-work makes or breaks a paint job. Everything must be blocked and sanded smooth before you lay paint over it. If not, even good paint will look bad. Just make sure they do good prep work, otherwise you'll see bumps, waves, and a grainy texture to it.
