this weekend, the wifey and I, and my cousin joe went out to look at a 91 MR2 N/A, T-tops, 71k, with some minor issues.
the clutch wont fully disengage, and once the car is warm the idle fluctuates rapidly from 800-12-1300, back and forth.
so we drove out, (it was about 45 min from home) and checked it out.
pretty nice little car, minor rust spots on the 2 front wheelwells, no major body damage.
starts right up, no problem, cold idle holds fine.
try to put the car in gear, no go.
shut the car off, put it in 1st. start car, no problem. car does not "lurch" forward at all.
as SOON as you start to take the clutch pedal off the floor, it starts grabbing. like less than 1/4".
once its in gear, the clutch will not fully disengage to allow you to shift.
i could "slip" it outta 1st and into 2nd ect. by speed matching..
the clutch is new, so im thinking clutch pedal adjustment, or slave cylinder..any thoughts?
for the idle thing, that was a little odd...
cold start, idle holds fine, no problems.
once it warms up to temp, the rpms start fluctuating back and forth between like idle and 1200rpm or so, on about a 2 second interval.
the kid had paid 3500 for the car, drove it 40 miles, and it died. he did the clutch, t-belt, waterpump and assosiated parts, working on it once a month for the past several months (the car is stored at his parents house, 100miles from where he is).
basicly just sick of working on it at this point, so we jumped in, and my cousin joe bought it for 2K.
here are some pics.

im pretty excited about it, should be a really fun car once we get the little issues worked out with it..

Did the clutch have the problem before he replaced it? Maybe he screwed up the install. In any event, that is a bargain and I hope you enjoy it!

my and my buddy had this same problem with a DSM. in his case, the clutch springs were bad. if this kid just installed it on his own... he might have put the clutch in backwards or messed up the install in another way.

but yeah, check the pedal adjustment 1st.... then see if the hydraulic cyl is moving or leaking when you press the clutch.

as for that idle problem ... try to swap out the idle AIC from another 5sfe. they tend to go bad, so that might be the problem.

ps... maybe swap the 5sfTe into it? smile.gif or better yet, your 3s!

nope doggmister, dude told me he had the flywheel resurfaced, with the proper .20 step in it.
the 12 second classic bettle in his garage that he built made me want to believe him..lol
the guy had like 5 cars in the driveway...his brother has a mr2T that you can see in the background of one of my pics, and his daily driver is a WRX..
im not worried about it, in a worse case, we'll drop the motor/tranny out, and get a new OEM clutch setup, and go thru things again making sure all the work he did is up to snuff, and start over.
anyone have a mr2T rear clip cheap??
HEHEHEHEHE

Nice Find.
I had simalar symtoms on my old fiero.
Which ended up being a broken spring
retainer where the spring actually came
out and wedged itself to where the pressure
plate wouldn't work right.

Edit:I forgot you said u could start it with no forward movement
Mine would not engage at all.

thats a steal for 2k even with the problems. the clutch problem the way you explained it i would agree try to adjust the clutch pedal as you said. sounds like it engages strong but its just difficult to disengage confused.gif as for idle problem, i believe cheesylobster had a similar problem with fluctuating rpms so might want to ask him if he ever figured out what that was.

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.

good find i've always wanted to get one...i seem to have the same prob with the clutch also...when the engine is off you can put it in any gear but when the engine is on you have to sorta force it into gear...when in gear it'll slowly move forward/backwards(when your holding the clutch) and when your moving let say 30mph in 2nd gear and i hit the clutch the rpm doesn't drop...i bought a clutch kit from clutch city and i'm changing my clutch and axels tomorrow so hopefully that'll solve the prob...
