It all began with the Coupe!

biggrin.gif I hate to start this but I'm bored and I like to divided today biggrin.gif

PS: I love both hatches and coupes equally. I was just thinking

1) The first Celica was a Coupe... so are the Coupes today "truer" to the original Celica concept?

2) 20 years from now, which will be more rare a 94 Coupe or a 94 Hatchback (not a GT4 rolleyes.gif )- both in great condition, and assume both are GTs? or STs? whatever

Discuss... ( and please be respectful of eachothers cars smile.gif )

The coupe is nice, if fixed up correctly.

lol this is simply all tastes. Slick has the priveledge of having one of the nicest couples ive seen. (another one is that maroon one with the kit, i dont know whos it is i can never remember). That being said i will always like the hatch body design over the coupes. It wont be as rare, but i like the way it looks =).

the easiest way to make a coupe look good is the TRD wing, i liked coomers coupe too..

however when i see an entirely stock coupe i cant believe its the same car as my hatchback.. i think stock coupes are just not good looking (no offense to anyone)

convertibles look better than coupes IMO, but i still prefer hatchback (id take a convertible though for the sheer top down factor)

Even though mine is no longer on the road i loved the coupe, sure more trunk space in a hatch but i love my coupe because its not another 6gc every other celica i see for sale is a hatch. And dont get me wrong i love the way the hatches look but i believe the stock tailights on the coupe/vert look way better than the hatch and its diffrent i liked being diffrent driving down the road its cool to see another 6gc but its even better to see a coupe which till this day ive only seen 3 including my own.

for the 6th gen, i have one thing to say.
94-99 GT-4 = the greatest stock celica ever made. only available in hatch.
end of disscusion.

true, i think they only came manual right? another common downside to celicas OUT THE WINDOW! And since its not a base model its guarunteed power windows/locks.. your exactly right

I personally like the hatchback over the coupe stock but i think that all look good (including vert). But again, it really depends on whats been done to them. I've seen some trashed up coupes, hatches, and verts. So looks all depend on whats been done. But kinda back to slick's question:

1) I don't think that the 94 coupe is very true to original because original was a little bit of a diferent design. It was not quite as powerful obviously but it started off as a rear-wheel drive (which was soon changed afterwords). The coupe has changed quite a bit since its debut in many ways, but its still a celica and its a sweet car.

2) As far as which will be more rare in 20 years, I would imagine that there will be less coupes than hatches becuase I believe that there were more hatches sold in 94 than coupes (correct me if im wrong) But Toyota soon found out that the hatchbacks were more well sought after and is why they began to only sell the hatch and vert and totally ditched the coupe in 99'.

Either way, no matter hatch, coupe, or vert, its still a celica and all of them are way cool.

But thats just my 2 cents...

I had a 91 Celica Coupe.. that was nice.. then my 97 Celica HB.. Im not really a fan of the coupe 6gc in the beggining.. especially the wingless ones.. they just looked naked! (goes for the 4,5,6gc) Then when I saw some with a wing they started looking alright.. HB ftw!

Yes I do believe tha coupe is lighter but the hatch sits a little lower which helps a little. In my oppinion though, I think that the hatch handles a bit better than the coupe. I drove a coupe with the same basic suspension setup as mine and the hatch had quite a bit of a handling advantage. But again it does depend on many factors like tires, suspension, options (leather, sunroof, things that add weight), and things like that. With all of these factors in mind it is pretty dificult to compare the coupe versus the hatch in handling unless you had the exact same setup and weight.

i prefer the hatchback because i think it looks a little sportier...they both are good cars though..
according to msn the 1996 celica hatchback is 2580lb, the vert is 2782lb, and the coupe is 2560lb...
i don't think there's much difference in 20lbs but then again that's $0.02...

Im sorry but you are not going to notice any difference what so ever in 20 pounds. Toyota dropped the coupe version in the later years of the 6GC for a reason. Coupes= eh i guess your car is nice. Hatchbacks= holy crap, is that a supra!? And i also back what Manny said.

i <3 my hatch wink.gif

i just really like that nice flowing line the hatch makes as opposed to the abrupt stop and flat trunk on a coupe...but thats just what i like in a car in general, nothing against 6gc coupe/verts
but all 6gc's have a place in my heart lol biggrin.gif

Mmmm, the convertible IS a coupe, with the top chopped off. The coupe's better handling, stiffer body and lighter. The tall rear end of the hatch gives it a sportier look, but I like the simplicity of the coupe, more like a true sports car. Easier to see out the back I bet too.

Overall Length is the same between HB and Coupe? and Vert is less? That seems counter intuitive. I thought for sure a cuope/vert is longer than a hatch. And the 360 lbs LESS than a hatchback!!! Damn homie. Diffantly will make a diff on the track.

Yeah I agree with most that a Hatch looks better than a "stock" coupe. But I still love my car.

I like my hacthback. trunk space galore, and if you flip down the back seats you have soooo much storage space it's not even funny. I bag groceries at a grocery store, and we offer to help customers take their groceries to their cars. well, one night I helped out this lady and she had a white coupe. she didn't have very much stuff, but I still had trouble fitting it all in. anyway, that brings me to my next point, how come everyone that I ever see driving a 6th gen around my town (there are at least 7 or 8 in my city besides mine) is some middle-aged lady? *sigh* our cars deserve better.

other than that, I just like the way the hatch looks a little more. but I still respect the coupe and have seen some sweet ones. I just wouldn't want to own one since I wouldn't be able to fit my guitar and amp in the back! biggrin.gif

i must say, as a coupe owner, that IMO hatches are sexier stock. when modded correctly both hatch and coupe are equal, but in my budget range, the sexier car would have been the hatch. but i was naive when i got the car and didnt know about the hatches, and the coupe is still sexy, just not as much as the hatch.

Far as I know, the Caldina is the first vehicle to pair an auto tranny and the magnificent monster known as the 3SGTE... Every single All-Trac is a manual... hatchback too... cough liftback cough....

My "two cent", the 5th gen coupe w/three piece spoiler looks the best... My All-Trac was heavy as F-word, and yeah thats the motor, options, drivetrain, etc, but that friggin hatch didnt help. The 5th gen GT hatches are a blast. Sadly, I don't know what its like to drive a 6th gen... kindasad.gif ... But I think the hatch looks the best... Personally, I don't like the sideways lights, but thats me... if they were done up like the 99-00 Civic Si with the red and white, itd look a lot better...

What will I be getting in the near future? A hatch... I bought the TRD quick shifter for it when I had my Trac, and planned on getting the car to match the shifter...

And yes I am dead serious about that

No matter what you own, be it a 1st gen or a 6th gen, coupe vet or hatch, beater or show winner, stick or auto... You are part of a family... Long live the dragon

a couple days late, but here goes.

technically, the coupes are *better* handling cars, because the plenum under the rear window acts as a brace between the shock towers on the rear. hatches, which lack any rigidity between the upper mounts, should technically suffer from less body rigidity.

the cargo capacity of coupes is laughable, i should know. i loved the way mine looked, but due to the high trunk sill (and consquent shallow trunk opening), cargo volume was insufficient. there was a lot of space back there, but if you couldn't fit it through the narrow trunk opening, game over. the hole in the panel behind the seats further limits cargo input.

the hatch has fewer interior obstructions, as well as a much larger opening. while i realise that this is a sporty car and was never intended to substitute for a pickup truck, moving back and forth to college a couple times a year would be much easier in a hatch. not to mention having space for a bmx bike, guitar amps, and anything else remotely cool one might want to carry along.

i'll have to do some research on the weight distributions, but i should think that they're about the same. the 6gen is an uncommonly well-balanced car at nearly 50/50.

on looks, i say they're totally tied. on practicality and functionality, hatches hands down.

verts = the fat asses of the celi family biggrin.gif

well n/m about the fat part, but they are overweight lol

lol if i get locked in the trunk im dead cause i dont have that thing where you could get out. lol but with so little space, especially since i got the subwoofer box that isint even big, it takes up like 3/4th of the space.

i hate going to cosco in my vert cause i gotta play tetris in the trunk to get everything to fit.
