I 'd like some feedback regarding a few things with the coilovers and SS system. Things such as whats your ride height (how many threads are showing below the locking nut). How long/did your coilovers settle? What damping setting on the SS are u using?
Thanks guys I'd just like to compare. On a side note, wow this suspension is great. Its unrelenting, takes the turns like a champ. Bumpier ride though. -------------------- |

My height is at the "standard setting" that they specify in the manual, it could go a good deal lower but I wouldn't be able to drive anywhere. Raising it would probably allow for less bumpiness due to having a greater travel available, however I find the standard settings to be quite nice.
For daily driving I believe my dampening is around 4-5 clicks up from the softest because otherwise it gets a little rough on ill-maintained roads that are everywhere around here. The standard setting of 10 clicks back from the most firm setting is very sporty, but gets old because of the harsh ride. I feel one of the best ways to truly find a perfect feel is to set the dampening to another 1-2 clicks softer than standard settings, and then play with your tire pressure a little. It's amazing how communicative the tires become with these coilovers, but a little towards the soft side and a little firm on tire pressure and the feel is nearly perfect. EDIT- I've begun to realize that keeping the rear somewhat softer in the rear makes understeer much less pronounced when cornering hard....forgot to include that. I've found my rear end hits alot harder than the front. I dont know if this is the nature of the car but I have the back end softer than the front.
I'm gonna take a pic of my rear end (haha) and post it to show you where my car sits and its not low enough for my liking. Too much wheel gap. Did any of your springs take time to settle? -------------------- |

Rear end should hit harder. Since the springs in front are 4 kgf/mm and the rear one's are 3 kgf/mm.
Weight balance is about 63% front/ 37% rear. So even so the springs are softer in the back, they have to carry so much less weight so on the same setting they feel harder. But I set the back harder then the front (got EDFC) so the are Level 0 (hardest) in the rear and Level 4 in the front. Thinking with thicker swaybar in the rear I can put the back out. -------------------- JDM Powerplant installed, BPU coming very soon!

for USDM SS dampers its 7 kgf/mm front and 5kgf/mm rear.
http://www.tein.com/ti/l36.html + a lil higher than tein recommended height makes the feel for a better suspension stroke. |

Kadett im surprised you can drive around with it at a level 4. I had mine on 2 clicks harder than standard setting and it was way to hard for the roads around here.
I also have the ST sway bar in the back. -------------------- |

I have driven it without EDFC for about 2,5 months on the hardest lever
![]() BTW my Dampers were delivered on the hardest setting ![]() ![]() No problems at all. Only streets that are paved (with bricks) instead of tarmac were not so nice. I we have ALOT of those in every town/village/city here. But if its true that the US spec dampers are with stronger springs then I could imagine the difference. i have a question about edfc. ive read that it is not compatible on the ss setup on our cars and i have also read that it is. ive seen it both ways so many times on a numerous amount of sites. just want to clarify if it is compatible on our cars with the Tein SS setup
also are they full threaded or partially threaded This post has been edited by 6G94celica: Jan 27, 2008 - 2:18 AM |

I was running on the lowest setting in the front and about 4 threads up in the rear. The reason is because in the rear, my tire would hit the coils when all the way lowered. I have since changed it to match in the front about 4 threads up and my dampening settings are at 6FR/6R.
I wanted to add something though. The title of this thread is called the Tein Superstrut/Coilover conversation. This confused me as I was thinking about the SuperStrut suspension that is factory on the GT-four and on other celica models. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the "SS" in Tein SS stands for SuperStreet, not SuperStrut. -------------------- |

ok thanks, but these teins dont come with upper strut mounts right? Ok so i know that coilovers are smaller/shorter than the stock set up, 1 inch shorter than oem struts? So when it says 2.4 and 1.2 in the rear, when comparing these coilovers to stock suspension setup, whats the drop difference.

k after searching around i found this
http://www.d2racing.com/content/products/air_suspension its said to be best of both worlds, a full coil system and air ride. its pretty much air bags with adjustable dampening. input??? its a nice heft $3,700 ![]() which goes onto my next question. whats a full coil that has an absolute max drop over the rest??? Tein, Ksport, Megan, D2, etc. i dont mind dropping 4k for the ones above, or even 2k to get what i need ![]() -------------------- I don't normally drive fast, but when I do its on a curvy section of this island

Well, Tein probably wont do the trick. And of all the same Taiwan manufactured coil systems Megan is probably your better bet. However, with that stated, all these companies are ones I would prefer not to buy.

megan has been around since 2001. d2 and k sport have been around for a few years more. Megan's will give you the biggest drop.

guys Ive notice that there is a difference between the Tein Super Street Coilover's found on the ST202 Super Strut and the ST204/AT200.
-ST202 Super Strut: Front 4k, Rear 3K -ST204/AT200 McPherson: Front 7K, Rear 5K why is there such a major difference between the two, I know the super strut has slightly more camber angle which in turn would allow it not to compress as much and need a lower kilo rating per shock?? that's my guess but what is the real answer??? -------------------- Group buy to replicate Narrow E series transaxle parts

The ST202 series (superstrut & Mcpherson) share the same tein spring rate. ^ my above spec sheet. The USDM vs JDM tein adj coilovers are different.
How would camber angle have an effect on suspension travel (besides guard rubbing)? -------------------- |

this is just a guess and i can't read japanese but the diagram is plotted as the force vector (in Newtons) vs compression (in meters i think). since it's not a linear plot it wouldn't be based on the springs alone but the springs with the dampers together. one graph per model type, and two plots per graph based on the damper settings. the dotted line being the softest setting.

How would camber angle have an effect on suspension travel (besides guard rubbing)? WHAT!!! what do yo mean superstrut and mcpherson spring rates are the same for the Tein SS. are you talking about the lowering springs?? Huh what do you mean the USDM vs JDM adjustable coilovers are different. your talking about the Superstrut Coilovers vs the Mcpherson Coilovers right? yes I would like to know why that is so. When they list the 4k front and 3k rear for superstrut are they referring to the spring rate on the coilover or is that the dampening force for the shock of the coilover, did I lose you??? camper angle should have an effect on suspension travel right or not really? since i do watch a lot of best motoring videos and hot version videos of youtube and I see that many integra type r's that are setup by various tuning company's have really stiff coilovers. The coilovers for integra's are rated at 16k front and 14k rear why is this?? is this for more adjustability when it comes to changing the dampening on the coilover?? -------------------- Group buy to replicate Narrow E series transaxle parts

i did some checking and based on TEIN's japanese website, SuperStreet jdm mcpherson and jdm superstrut spring rates are the same (F: 4kg/mm, R: 3kg/mm). but on the TEIN USA website, SuperStreet usdm mcpherson spring rates are F: 7kg/mm R: 5kg/mm. i'm not sure why there's a huge difference between the jdm and usdm mcpherson spring rates but maybe it's to make up for the missing upper mounts? since the UK mcpherson spring rates are the same as the JDM ones and also come with the upper mounts.

OK So I understood you. but do not mix superstrut jdm mcpherson in the same phrase, that just confuses other members so from my undestanding let me clear things up.
Japan Tein SuperStreet Coilover specs : McPherson and SuperStrut springs rates are the same (Front : 4kg/mm, Rear : 3kg/mm) United States Tein SuperStreet Coilover specs : Mcpherson spring rates are (Front : 7kg/mm, Rear : 5kg/mm) I will ask tein usa as to why the spring rates are different and as to why they do not provide upper mounts here for USA Dealers.... now my question why the hell are spring rates for the jdm and usdm so low. I know that megan coilovers are at 10kg/mm front and 7kg/mm rear!!! -------------------- Group buy to replicate Narrow E series transaxle parts

As most of you know driving conditions here in California have very smooth roads, where testing most likely took place for the AT200/ST204 Tein Super Street Coilover specs setup. The fact that Europe and Japan come with pillow ball mounts has nothing to do with the different spring rates, but just with different road conditions. Being that USA has better road conditions generally speaking. with that said here are the specs for both mcPherson and Superstrut Susupension :
![]() Cost to Rebuild Shocks here in California are $75 per coilover for original specs listed on the sheet above. If you want a custom set up, it will be $100 per coilover This post has been edited by BonzaiCelica: Feb 25, 2013 - 4:03 AM -------------------- Group buy to replicate Narrow E series transaxle parts

Front 9kg and Rear 7kg max. Any spring rate higher than that, you'd have to go custom dampening set up. -------------------- Group buy to replicate Narrow E series transaxle parts

That's interesting about the made to order Teins.
I know mine are EDFC compatible, it talks about how to install them in my coilover book, just wondering if people have had to remove to covers to allow room for the motors in the rear. Also I think all the Japanese Super Street Teins, ST202 & ST205 are EDFC compatible, it's the AT200 that aren't -------------------- |
