Suddenly, my coolant temp. gauge started fluctuating.
It always was rock solid at a little below midline,
regardless of 120F+ heat outside. Couple days ago,
it started fluctuatiung between normal and ~ 1/4 position.
It never went above normal - only below. My car has no modifications,
new termostat + coolant flush 3 months ago. No overheating problems ever.
It is 95 GT auto. Anyone had similar experience or ideas what it could be?

maybe you have air bubbles in your coolant lines?

That happened to me before. After checking for air bulbbles and doing a system flush I found out my radiator had a very small leak from a crack in the radiator. You might want to take a good look at the radiator itself to make sure. wink.gif

I have my coolent lines disconnected from my intake manifold. And I have a ram-air type scoop for air. When I go around 70 to 80 + mph on a cool night, my temp drops. Otherwise, I think you have a thermostat problem. They aren't expencive or hard to change, so might as well.

if your temp is normal at idle (about 1/2) and low (about 1/4) on the highway, then it is your thermostat that is stuck open. The coolant is flowing through your system continously. Replace the thermostat and then it will be fine (about 1/2) all the time.

on a side note, our engines were designed run at the normal optimal temp. Anything else isn't correct smile.gif

Thermostat replced 3 months ago - new toyota. I just purged the air - still the same -
1/4 at idle or drive, sometimes shoots up to normal, then drops. More ideas?
Anyone has a spare temp. sender?
