I just realized today the the previous owner snapped off my latch release for the hatch, the one next to the fuel cap release. Now only the fuel door release remains and if I stick my finger in the assymbly I can feel where it was snapped off. I went to the dealer and they gave me the part number 6460620171, a "lever sub assy." They told me I could have it for the small cost of $75.79! frown.gif Anybod know where to get one for just a tad cheaper? (Or how to fabricate something?) Thanks!

Keep your eye open for someone parting out a celica in the buy/sell forum. They pop up there occasionally. Also you could take a trip to your local import junkyard and see what you can dig up. In the mean time, dont put anything in hatch! And dont pay that price for the release lever, thats ridiculous!

Yea I thought that was waaay too much! I work at a harley dealership and I know things can be overpriced, but that even blew me away. I can open the hatch with the key for now, no big deal. Thanks for the reply, I'll check the junk yard when I get a chance.

is it the plastic outer handle that broke? because that alone should be $9. but the metal cable release assembly all together is $75.

Just the plastic handle. The cable is still functional, I just have to reach insider the box to hit it.

Would you happen to know the part number of just the outer handle?

Haha, it's funny. You're looking to get your fixed. Sometimes people with stereo's break these tabs/cut the cable on purpose, so theives need a key to open hatch.

Back on topic...GL finding the part

Guys, you can make that lever not work by turning the key in your hatch the opposite way in the lock and removing it.

Just got back from the dealer. I gave them the part# and they said they could have it for me in a couple weeks. I asked the lady what the description was for kicks and she told me just the grommet... are you sure this is the handle and everything? The price is $8. When she realized I was the person from yesterday she got all huffy with me "well somebody on the internet must have misinformed you. So azian_advanced, if you can verify that is the lever and grommet and not just the grommet, let me know so I can get this fixed. Thanks!

Oh btw I was reading the owners manual, jess_i_74 is right, you can just turn the key counterclockwise and remove it and it will only open again with the key.

Hey, I had the same problem on mine. To get that lever assembly out first remove the trim piece along the bottom of the door frame (on the floor), then unbold the two bolts on the left hand side that hold the seat railing onto the carpet so that you can lift the seat up a couple of inches. You then have to unbold I believe one maybe two bolts from the front of that whole assembly. After that you can push the assembly back under the seat and pull it out the back side, you have to pull it out from under the carpet and unbolting the seat is the only way to do that. You then just switch out the handle and replace it with the new one. BTW, it takes a little twisting and turning to get the assembly out from where it is bolted in...this might sound kind of complicated but it's really not, if you have any questions or want pictures let me know and I can help ya out.

Sorry for grave digging, but I figured I'd just resurrect this thread rather than make a new identical one.
I ordered that part 64648-20010 from Toyota. It came from Japan and finally came in. It ended up just being the plastic that surrounds the gas and hatch popper. The Toyota dealership swears they will only sell me the plastic thing with the cable and everything for $75. Anybody know if there is a part number for just the plastic piece? Thanks

from the online dealers 1sttoyotaparts and toyotaworld the assy sells for about $58 then add another $8 for shipping. The handle itself isn't listed by alone just the assy. As said before wait for someone parting out and jump on it.

Wish I had better news.

I wish it were easier to yank off, it looks like a trip to the local junk yard is in order. Thanks for verifying what I already suspected AudioFreak wink.gif
