Ok so here is the story.

I have a HP Pavillion ZE4900 Laptop. I've had it for ehhh 3 years.

Reciently it was overheating alot, thanks to my geek buddy i realized my fan wasn't working. After calling a few places and getting quoted too much money i decided to take matters into my own hands.
Sooooo i took my laptop apart (BIG pain in the ass) The fan was so full of dust, and thanks to my beautiful Bella... cat hair. So i clean it out, compressed air and all, put it all back together ( with the exception of one screw i can't figure out where it goes. ) I turn the computer on, and it seems fine.
15 min later, it dies, the fan wasn't spinning.
So i go to Circut City... i got a targus notebook chill pad. Works great. All of a sudden my fan starts to work again.
So now, with the fan and chill pad my computer is doing fabulous.

OR SO I THOUGHT!

Yesterday i was online and i got a blue screen that said something to this effect:
( BLUE SCREEN )
It says something about if this is the first time restart the computer, which is stupid because it doesnt let you restart, and it restarts on its own.
Beginning dump of physical memory.
Physical memory dump complete........

It happened last night for the first time. Then i was watching a movie and it did it again. At this point i just shut it off.
This morning i put the computer back on and other then my active desktop needed to be restored it looked fine.

anyone?

Are you using wireless internet? What driver are you using? Right-click My Computer and select Manage. Once that window opens up select Device Manager. Go down to Network Adapters and expand it. Tell me what is there. If you are using a Compaq wireless driver then that might be your problem. Let me know if this is true and I can see if I can get you a patch for that. We are having the same issue in the school district I work for, except with Compaq (HP)n600 laptops.

have you performed any system updates recently? Have you made any changes to hardware settings?

I'd have to look at all that when i get home because i'm at work and on my PC here.

I havent changed anything, My computer does update, but it does it automatically. I'm not sure when was the last time it did it.
No hardware changes.

reformat your harddrive, back up all your work before you do it. Basically whats happening is your harddrive has corrupted sectors on it, which intern will be read and stored on your ram chip. Then your CPU goes to read your RAM to pull up the information for (insert application here) and says "WTF IS GOING ON???" trys to read the sector again from the harddrive and says "OMFG WE GOTS A Hax0rs" so then your computer is forced to dump its physical memory (on the ram chips) and restart to clean them out. You might want to scan your harddrive for erros before you do do a reformat tho, might fix the problem. Start -> Programs -> Accesories -> System tools -> Disk Defragmenter. This will scan for errors and also move files to the front of your harddrive so they can be located quicker and easier. Anywho, hope this helps.

tina, everyone is giving you bad advice so far.

your blue screens are happening because of your fan. over time they can go bad, and need to be replaced. all that dust and cat hair get into the bearings and wear them down to the point that the fans will no longer work, or start to make funny noises. the chill pad, can help a little bit, but its not a replacement for a proper working internal fan. take a look on ebay for a new replacement fan for your laptop (they are model specific). youll basically have to take apart the laptop again, unplug and unscrew the old fans and replace them with new ones. it should fix your problem.

Actually there are many things that can cause a memory dump. Seeing as nothing has been ruled out so far no one has given bad advice.

-You can check the driver, some do have issues- I know because I deal with them.
- You can go into your BIOS (I believe F10 or F8 on startup) and perform a memory test. If that is bad (which I doubt) then you found your problem.

Is your fan coming on and off sparatically and is it making strange noises? If so then it is probably your fan

None of this is bad advice, thank you Lagos.

Art thank you smile.gif

I was ready to call it quits on this. Sometimes the fan goes on... sometimes it doesnt. I hear it TRYING to go on. It makes a clicking noise, but it's not catching i guess. So, i'm going to leave my computer OFF untilll i can get a new fan, i dont need to damage the poor thing any more.

Are there any other places i can look for a fan? E-bay doesnt seem to have my computer...

usually physical memory dumps are overheating of your cpu, ram or something else. rarely are they driver related.

Tell that to the school district i work for. It might be a rare thing, but it occurs, and because HP and compaq are the same company I assume they still use the same technology. Also when you update drivers incorrectly it can really screw things up.

In regards to ur fans, if it's a normal centrino cpu (i might be wrong, our technology like 2 yrs behind u guys) and taken into consideration that the fan loooks clean, basically it kicks in when ur computer detects that the cpu is reaching a high temperature state, therefore powering up. Once it detects that the cpu is at a safe operating temp, it shuts off, with a normal computer when a cpu is overheating, it either restarts and or freeze up, usually there is an alarm to warn u that something is at a critical point. I myself ran across this feature with my Pentium M 1.7Ghz (yes it's old i know tongue.gif ), however this generally standard across the laptop range, as because constantly supplying power to the fan reduces power and that the laptop cpu are generally less hot compared to normal computers. As for the suspecting memory error, what u can do is download yourself a copy of Hiren Boot CD and run a memroy diagnostic, this will determine whether ur memory is faulty. Also it doesn't hurt to clear up ur hard drive and do a fresh installation of windows. Well i hope thismight help you with your problem wink.gif

well, some people said to stop visiting porn sites, and thats definetly not the problem..lol

drivers used to cause these types of issues back in the windows 98 days. now, XP has a hardware abstraction layer that prevents these things from happening.

memory timings COULD be the problem, but most laptops built and tested at the factory (unlike a diy pc), and normally dont offer you any memory or cpu clocking options in the bios... just so that people dont mess them up by accident.

she said she was having problems with the fans not working correctly. over time, PC fans wear out and start making funny noises, or refuse to come on at all. you can get away with taking them off, and trying to oil them, but after a while the problem always comes back, untill they are replaced.
heat is the number one cause of computers crashing. i always had to deal with these types of issues for customers, when i used to do computer consulting for recording studios.

Either you could buy a new one online (about $50 ~ $100?), or... just go to Walmart during Black Friday and get a new laptop for like $299...
