EDIT: I started this thread X-mas break 06-07 while attending the Naval Academy Preparatory School. Now I am about to leave for the Coast Guard Academy and will be going through an officer indoctrination. therefore no 6gc until September and no driving the celi until 2010ish..... anywho i'm going to keep updating this thread when possibly i am home for a holiday and work on the car etc.!! wish me luck.

(original)

So i'm home for Christmas break and its time to work on my car. The swap is sooo close to being complete and i'm hoping to transfer my plates over soon so she is on the road. Right now she is sitting on the lift at my friends garage and i have been working on her everyday.

[b]December 21st:

-Replaced an axle seal
-welded the stock exhaust to match up with the 3sgte
-fixed some issues with the door lock
-got the power steering running
-removed the rear wiper and antenna
-installed the kirkasaurus polyurethane inserts

December 22nd:
-welded the holes where the wiper and antenna were
-bondo'ed the holes as well as some other body work areas
-painted the hub on a front rotor
-and painted the caliper red
-painted my gt-four riser blocks
-debadged (still glue on there though...

For the rest of the break i plan on:
-finishing the body work
-installing riser blocks and spoiler DONE!
-installing 6.5 front components DONE!
-making custom clear turns
-installing all of the interior panels that are currently out... DONE!
-installing three DCW gauge pods (triple, single and shift boot) DONE!
-installing 6 prosport gagues (oil pres, fuel pres, boost/vacuum,water temp, exhaust temp, volt)DONE
-Moving battery to boot DONE!
-installing alpine head unit DONE!
-put my rims on there DONE!
-Install custom intake pipe DONE!
-MAKE HOOD CLOSE DONE!
-and soooooo much more i can't remember off the top of my head!

here are some progress pics:

^ On my friends lift

^ The daily driver waiting patiently outside smile.gif smile.gif (those are the rims that will be on the black car soon)

^ Some stuff waiting to go in!

Nice work,

But what about the TMIC, dont really think its gonna do any good with no hood vents to give a bit of cooling aid?! Or is that what you are talking about with custom intake pipe?

My Spearco is on its way smile.gif and the piping is already sitting on the floor in my room

The custom intake pipe is something Art made for me (Lagos) It replaces the stock rubber intake piping

Here is today's update.. It's so late because i just got home smile.gif I had a late night battle with some MDF and my front speakers..

ok here goes

December 26th

-DIY Knock detection mod (from the FI stickies) (thanks Art smile.gif)
-Finished installing the A.R.T Intake
-Moved Battery to the boot wired it up the RIGHT way smile.gif
-Finished wiring in the gauges on the triple pod (oil pres and water temp senders are still uninstalled)
^had to chop the dash some for that one.. my prosport gauges are pretty deep and were hitting
-Installed 6.5 component on the driver side door.
-Got the hood to close !! (latch was messed up)
This took me the better part of the day.. had some wiring issues and then the MDF battle raged on for a while.

IPB Image

Sauldering the battery stuff

IPB Image

The Intake Art made for me^

IPB Image

Knock Detection Lights^

IPB Image

Triple Pod^

IPB Image

Pro-Sport gauges up close, the fuel pressure is the only one hooked up under the hood, and the plasticglass protection peices are still on these

I actually own both smile.gif i have the 3s hatch and a 5s coupe. I like the hatch better as well just due to the flow of the car, but i like the coupe tail lights more.

in the end i love them both smile.gif

but the biggest difference is the hatch being a full hatch where the glass lifts up etc and the coupe having a trunk instead. the coupe is a LOT stiffer in the back suspension wise since it is solid across the strut towers. the hatch has way more space though and now that my back seats are out its like having an SUV lol. The tailights and rear bumpers are also different

Good luck! hope to see you on the road with a 6gen soon!

December 27th

So today i spent the better part of the day getting the car registered etc. So she is officially on the road now biggrin.gif

I also got these things done..
-installed the other 6.5 component in the passenger side door.
-got the fans to actually work
-finished the body work, and primed it.
-hooked up my ipod adapter to my cd head unit...

i think thats about it for today, no pics since i left the memory stick in my comp..
i basically spent most of the day going to the regristry, and then driving around town a bit to see how she runs smile.gif

damn she pulls pretty good when you hit the right rpm, but im taking it easy since its a new clutch and all new brakes so the car needs to break in a bit more.. I'm also not sure if she is knoking or not, when i drove it home tonight i didn't get the green light at all even under boost. ill see how it is in the morning smile.gif

Mods i cannot wait for:
-3 in exhaust
-boost controller
-FMIC

^ after those mods i have a feeling the beast will be unleashed biggrin.gif tongue.gif

-painted the other calipers red
-painted the other hubs black
-installed new e-brakes (cables and all)
-finished some painting on the body work (not completly done with it, but i primed and painted since i can't finish it for a few weeks)

IPB Image
IPB Image

But right now its running and im not getting the green light at all (knock detection lights) I don't know if im knocking or not. I am boosting around 6 psi maybe 7. what does the stock ecu turn the boost to when its in safe mode??

you aren't keeping that sweatband on your resevoir all the time are you?

i do that on my sportbike so that the sunlight doesnt break down the brake fluid, which i guess is a serious problem if it's left exposed through the cap for days at a time.

could be a hazard in your situation though, i wouldn't leave it on there.

i was trying to be trendy lol, could that potentially be a hazard?

On a different note, i drove the celi and every time i start her up and drive away i am in safe mode, only boosting 6 psi. and then after about ten minutes of driving the car leaves safe mode and is fine and doesn't go back into it.. im really curious of why it is doing this.. any ideas?

also my speedo stopped working.. ill attack that later..... fun fun kindasad.gif

ok so after a bit of research i think that either the knock light is coming on because:

-faulty sensor
-terrible cooling due to TMIC not receiving cool air from anywhere
-issues with coolant temp sensors etc.

i have a new fuel filter and new plugs (bosch platinums, <came with motor.. im going to replace them with NGK's soon)

I am not throwing any codes though..

I think number 2 can be a very good issue.
Also run the GTE (with W2A intercooler thou) with the GT/ST hood. But I can feel the differences with the GT4 hood+bumper installed. Everything is a lot cooler then previously. And that is with a better TMIC then your A-A IC.

Cant you took of the hood for a few test runs, or is the weather really bad @ your place?

if your still on the top mount, then chances are you boosted, then you knocked, then you got put into safe mode. the car normally stays in safe mode after a knock for a few minutes well after the knock happened.

if i were you, i wouldnt boost at all until you get a fmic installed. the top mount is VERY HORRIBLE. try to put your hand on it after a drive...it gets so hot that you'll burn yourself. it provides almost no cooling to the turbo, and is even a bad design for the stock st185.

The exact symptomes are as follows:

Start the car and she will run under safe mode for about 5-10 minutes. Usually until the engine temp (stock gauge, aftermarket one not hooked up yet) reaches a certain point.

Then she will leave safe mode and run completly fine without going back into safe mode.

The car hasn't entered safe mode while driving at all.. only at first when i start her up.. (she also hasnt started outside of safe mode)

So its either due to a time thing, or a temp thing im thinking?

maybe tomorrow i will run it until its out of safe mode then shut it off and start it again and see if its back in safe, and if its not then i can possibly assume its a temp thing?

Or.... maybe it knocks right at start-up everytime?

any ideas Art?

this is totally normal. the ecu is programed to keep the boost low, because you could damage a motor by boosting it when its still cold. it happens more often in cold weather. so thats nothing to worry about.

the one thing i think i should have pointed out in the tvsv how to, is that there are other conditions besides just knock that can make the red led stay on. really cold outside temps, or cel codes, or not having the car up to temp, can cause the light to stay on.

Ok well i made the two hour drive to school with no issues at all!!!!
It made me pretty excited to have the car run safely and reliably without any incidents. I picked up one of my friends at TF Green airport outside of providence RI, and while i waited for him i managed to put some of the interior back together smile.gif so i guess thats the current progress.

I also managed to swing by and see Dustin (Batman722) and show him the swap biggrin.gif

This car is going to be fun tongue.gif

Its a DCW custom product, and it fits two 52mm gauges which i believe are the same as 2" inch gauges. I'm not sure how easy the availability would be on this, I had to make a special request to get one. biggrin.gif

UPDATE

I finished installing all three DCW gauge pods as well as all 6 pro-sport gauges (only one not connected to a sender is the oil pressure)

I also spent the better part of the day putting the head unit in and all the interior panels below the dash.
Dustin (batman722) can tell you how empty it was wink.gif

here are the pics!!!!!! woot.gif

It actually feels like a car now with the interior back in.. oh god it was depressing with no CC, head unit, glove box, etc etc.. but now its all back together biggrin.gif

the interior looks awesome!

looks like the intake was a perfect fit too.

if you want to clean up the engine bay, paint the exhaust heat shield and the valve cover, with some high temp paint. if you can, look into powder coating them.

Yea the intake is great! Nice work on the welds biggrin.gif

Can i polish the valve cover? I'd love for it to be all bling and shiny.

I think once i get rid of the top mount inter heater I think it will clean the look up a bit. that and if i can organize the wiring and lines etc.. just too much clutter right now.. I'm gonna remove the AC once i get the correct belt and parts.

Well I love them, but really they can be tough to see during the day if the sun is in the wrong spot. I would still buy them though if i were to do it again, but i do a lot more driving at night due to my current situation. Also im going to get my windows tinted soon and im hoping that might help a bit. And if need be im going to attempt to toss a brighter led into one of them.

for the price you can't beat them and i love the look.

maybe just buy one for now and see how it is and if its not going to work out, you only spent 40$

Just drove the car, its kinda overcast with no bright sun and i could read the guages fine, its really only bad when the sun is at the wrong angle and real bright. like i said im going to tint soon and see how that works out. I'm going to put that 6 inch tint strip on the top of the windshield to see if that will help

Ok so I drive back to base, and I stop at the ATM real quick.. on the way there though i notice the battery warning light pops up.. I smell a small hint of something burnt.. rubber maybe? so when i get to the ATM i pop the hood and to my amazement my alternator is on fire...

Just a small 4 inch flame... the rubber cap that covers the power lead was on fire... and after i blew it out i touched the power lead and the wire (as thick as a pen) broke in half without me touching it very forcefully at all......

So my hypothesis is.. i need a new alternator! biggrin.gif

Thankfully Dustin and Steff are around and are coming with another alternator woot.gif

EDIT: I ALSO NEED TO BUY A FIRE EXTINGUISHER! (not going to risk anything again)

-Blue LED interior to match the prosports

Somewhat near future:
-EBC

-FMIC/GReddy BOV
-EBC Pads

the same thing happened to me twice! the wire that connects to the alt power stud rotted off from the heat from some sort of current draw i guess. i had to cut my wiring harness back a good 8 inches and solder on some fat 4guage wire and put a larger stud on the alt with all brass claps. seems to be fine since then. it sucked i was far from home and the system wouldn't charge so i drove home at midnight with no headlights just running lights and had to stop every couple miles to hold a screw driver on the battery and the wire on the screwdriver to make a connection to charge it. sparks and heat it wasn't a fun drive home.

Ouch, its good that you are handy enough to find a way to get home biggrin.gif

I just took the wiring from my parts car and spliced it in. I have no clue why it did that the first time. I replaced the alt and it seems fine now, not heating up like it did before tongue.gif

-Installed KYB's and Tien S-techs
-Finally put the underbody plastics and wheel well liners in
-Dynamat on Driverside quarter panel (ran out..)

About it..
here is a before and after of the drop

She handles sooooo much better now, especially in the turns. I can use a lot more of the power i have now since the suspension isn't shot and its lower... I am really in shock at how much this single thing helped the feel of the car. this with the 8in wide tires and i have a good amount of traction (of course it can always be better)

This weekend looks like i am going to seafoam the beast and possibly try to flush the coolant to see what is going on with the oil in the system...

oh yes, and of course i get to do 2 axle seals AGAIN.....

HUGE MODS!! OH SNAP!!

-Changed the clock to blue
-Snipped the green so the clock won't dim smile.gif

on a more serious note..
-replaced both axle seals again..... anddd they still leak... really annoyed right now.

^Spent all day doing that^ and I have no clue why they still leak. Its getting real old. Ive done 5 axle seals total in the past 6 months. On the bright side I'm getting damn good at it... but apparently not if they still leak........

I think the CV's are fine, its the small 5$ seals at the differential gear that are leaking.. I'm not sure if i'm missing a dust cover or something? but when i put new ones in, and then drove around the block, sure enough the new ones leaked too.. I think the speedo gear part is dead, but im not sure if this would effect the seals in at the differential.

thanks for reminding me to pick up a couple new seals from the dealer.
not sure on why they are leaking really. if you used new seals that should have solved it unless they arent seated right or moved when you put the axels in.

The seals i replaced, (brand new two months ago) one had a small tear and the other a crack... They are leaking right where the axle slides through them.. i was very gentle this time... but oh well.

PS: i just got in the car and had it idling while i removed the gauge cluster to do some blue led's and the tranny is making noises.. like metal touching metal noises. faint, but definatly there.. on and off etc. nothing terrible but its still an issue.. so the speedo gear is shot ( i think) the seals blow and the tranny makes noises and doesn't like to shift smooth.... new tranny time?

You might not be up to that point... for now. Use the beater car and find out what's going on with it before actually leaving a trail of oil on the highway and on the tow truck. A moaning tranny is a sick, possibly dying, tranny. Believe me, I know... frown.gif

-Sunpro metric adapters arrived so i could finally hook up the oil pressure gauge.
-put the leather seats back in the car and removed the cloth ones.
-installed a new thermostat, now the car sits right around 180-190 while driving.. before it wouldn't get over 145.....
-added a quart to the leaking tranny...

thats about it.. i have some nice pics ill toss up in a bit

So all of these pics are my drive home from school in the morning and then one on the drive back to school at night.

Anyone from around boston will recognize some of this area.

I love them at night. During the day......... Its tough to see them. I'm not gonna lie they can be difficult to read. If the sun is bright they aren't the easiest things to see. If i had to do it all over again i would still buy them though. If you wear sunglasses they are inpossible to read. In those pics above^ they are on in all of the pics... in one pic i am about to go into the tunnel and then the next pic im in a tunnel and the third pic i just left the tunnel, you will notice how they look like they are not turned on while im outside... for the price though... it might be worth buying one to check out if its worth buying more. heck i got 6 gauges for 300 including the 90$ ext temp gauge.

I'll try to get you a vid if i get a chance this weekend

Wait till i get the HID's biggrin.gif butttt those pics ^do the car too much justice lol, in person its still in ok.. shape. as you have seen. but anywho new tranny soon! and HID's hopefully will help out driveability and looks.

I have to roll the rear fenders a bit more, i still rub a little bit, i didn't foll them where the mudgaurds start, and i hit right there in tight corners or with passengers in the back.

There are a couple of really good spots on base where we should all get our cars together and take pics, like yours mine dustins and manny if he wants to drive lol. There is a crazy looking peir near the air craft carriers that would make a good shot with all four cars at sunset or something biggrin.gif
