I just picked up a Canon Rebel XTi body with a 50mm f/1.8 lens and I'm very excited about it. I go tthe body with a 50mm fixed lens to start out with. I will look into getting a better lens later on.
Is anybody else using a DSLR? What are u using and with what lens' etc...

oh BTW: Selling my Canon Powershot S50. Its a 5.0mp P&S but its a pretty powerful P&S you can see the shots I've taken with it on last years calendar (Tina's car) and some other shots I can provide. I'm selling it for $125; comes with card and all cables etc.

Camera seems to have sold on ebay within an hour of posting it so unless I dont get paid its sold.

I'm a proud owner of Nikon D70 with a standard crappy kit lens and with a 70-210mm telescope lens. I love that stuff smile.gif

I wanted to go SLR, but I instead picked up a canon A640 10MP P&S. I do want to go SLR later on though once I learn a bit more about Aperature/shutter speed/ISO settings. How much did you pay for the camera and the lense? PM me if you dont want to post. Thanks.

I have the Canon Rebel XTi, with the kit lens, and I think its actually a pretty good "carry-around" lens. I've taken quite a few pictures with it and they're pretty good. I use a Canon 75-300mm lens for further distance shooting. I like to take night pictures too, but what I take pictures of at night is usually for the most part motionless and I use a tripod with the kit lens for now. Let me know how you like your f/1.8 lens when you take some pictures with it. That's the lens I was thinking about getting next for some better indoor shooting. amazon.com has a great price on the basic version of that lens.

BLINKYxMUNKEY, that 28-135mm IS lens is great. My uncle has it for his 20d and let me borrow it to test it out; its definitely a nice lens.

Sweet. I have been hearing that about the lense. Even tried one when I was in Jacksonville at their Ritz Camera. Just absolutely loved it.

Time for me to start looking. I should have about 7 or 800 to spend from tax return this year,
on something any suggestions. My boss swears by his d30 but thats a little out of my price range.
What are some things to look for. I am a little hesitant about throwing around more than a couple
hundred on anything on e-bay.

It is somewhat confusing looking at a 30d you can get new kits with a couple lenses
and a bunch of other stuff tripods cases ect for like 1250 or just a body for like 1100
what would be the advantage to buying just the body? What will a 30d do that a XTi
rebel won't? The XTi is higher mp but less expensive. confused.gif I really like my sony digital
but everyone seems to say canon or nikon for slr.

For 800 I would get the XTI. It's a good entry level SLR, with a lot of nice features. There are things it doesn't have that the 30D does, but it also has things that the 30D doesn't. Such as the dust remover. It vibrates the mirror on shutdown and startup to eliminate any accumulated dust.

Higher megapixel just means you can blow the pictures up more. While the XTI has higher MP, the 30D will have higher quality photos on higher ISOs (less noise).

Buying a body-only is only advantageous if you know what lenses you want and don't want the kit lens. I bought a body-only XTI because the kit lens is not of the highest quality. I bought a 50mm 1.8 instead. It's a cheap, but sharp and versatile lens. I also have a 100mm macro and a 28-105 zoom. All of which are Canon.

You can't go wrong with an XTi. I prefer the Canon lens's over the Nikons.

Those are very good cameras. My friend has an S5, and I'd say it's more of an advanced P&S. It's not an SLR though.

no, your right, its not. but the only thing it really lacks is the ability to upgrade lenses. most people just starting out with their first manual camera wont care about that. for 300bucks, the image quality, and features make it a great bang for the buck for beginners like me.

i even found a firmware hack for it that adds raw support. smile.gif

My sony has all manual controls I want something that I won't outgrow
I really like wildlife photography but the lack of interchangable lenses
makes it very difficult, sports also I need more zoom capability otherwise
my sony works fine for most situations. Huge pictures are not a big factor
my 3.2 mp is fine up to about 1200x1600. I have been reading more about
the xti and it seems to have everything I am looking for, and for under 900.00
you can get a pretty nice kit.

XTI is very nice, and a great camera. The downside is that if you want to do sports photography and wildlife photography, your probably going to want a longer lens. The kit lens I think is an 18-55, so you wan't get much magnification. Your probably going to be looking at a 200mm lens at the least, and then you would have to decide if you want an L(uxury) lens, Image Stabilization, all of which adds hefty change to an already hefty price.

So while the XTI has a lot, like any SLR; you will probably want to expand your lens inventory, and those can very easily double the cost of the camera.

I got my XTi body for about 700 and I've already spent about that on lenses, and 2 of them were used.

I have the XTi as well and love it. I also bought a Canon S2 back whenever they came out, I'd really recommend the S-series like the S3 and S5 as mentioned. VERY good camera's for the price. They're pretty good for deciding if you want to get into more advanced photography or not. But if you do you do want to just get a true SLR, the XTi is a very nice camera. Lately the prices have dropped a good bit on them too.

Newegg has a great deal on it right now, with the kit lens to get started out on.

If you sign up for newegg's email newsletter you can apply coupon code EMC1106CAME01 and get another $20 off, making it $649.99 plus shipping.

Here's the link to the newegg page- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16830120070

Get a large, high-speed memory card too. I have a 4gb Transcend card that is 133x and they're ridiculously cheap now, $33. I haven't had a single problem with it in almost a year of use.

Found this on Slickdeals.net tonight..

Canon 40D with 28-135 IS lens, for $1135.
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/con...amp;oc=CEOS40DL

Use your Dell Preferred card and save $39. Go to ebay and get the 10% off coupon and it brings it down to $1135. Supposedly there is a 15% off coupon too if you're lucky...making it $1072.

Googling I found this site..

http://www.bestpricecameras.com/

I started searching around, and found this Nikon D80
Ive read about this camera in DPReview, and it looks like its not as powerful as the current DSLR now. Not really worried about that since this will be my first DSLR.

Im still thinking at why it is so cheap. I know that its BODY only, and I will need to buy battery, charger, lense, carrying case, etc..

Can you guys help me with this? I was looking at this and the Digital Rebel XTi

They still come with a battery. wink.gif Just need to buy a lens and memory card to use it. The D80 is nice, but they just sound cheap to me whenever I have played with them. My XTi sounds much sturdier but the body is smaller. A grip can fix that. Just go to a Best Buy or a camera shop and play with their cameras. It's really all personal preference.

Canon will be releasing the XSi in April? I think. It's an improvement on the XTi with 12.2mp and a live viewing screen.

Yea, but what disappoints me is that it still shoots 3.5 fps and only takes SD cards. The rubberized grip also adds a really nice touch though.

I was going to get a 17-85 and a 70-300 but what I have seen on the 70 to 300
isn't that impressive so I am going to save up for a good tele and a wide angle.
The shooting speed is incredible on this thing. The live view is very cool you can take shots remote
with a laptop and usb cable while viewing it on the screen. I just need a grand for the wifi usb adaptor
to take shots without the cable. haha maybe next year.

Don't go with the 70-300mm. The 70-200mm f/(4 or 2.8)L blows it out of the water.

Here's a link to examples of most lenses.

it is totaly sick, I guess for $1600 it should be. After I learn to use my camera a little better
I am going to borrow it from him. tongue.gif If he lets me.lol

If your going that long of a focal length I'd seriously recommend image stabilization. The kit lens will be a good walk around lens with plenty of working room.

i just bought me a Cannon Rebel XT yesterday for $430..it was an open item at best buy...but im takin it back because theres this weird black spot in every picture i take and theres some weird rattel coming from the flash....hopefully i can get it fixed or replaced.

edit: so bestbuy is screwin me over and i cant even send it out for 2 weeks, then its gonna take 2 or 3 weeks to fix it..on average...but the good news is, if they cant get it fixed, or it takes more then 5 weeks to get fixed, they will upgrade it to an XTi for free.

very nice shots, the really nice thing about l lenses is they really
hold the value. Here is a sample of the shooting speed of this thing
not the greatest pics but look at the white suv in the upper right.
Its moving a about 60mph with a 4 mb jpeg. I may actually be able to
get some good action shots of my kids next year in football.
