i went to see a 95 sc400 today, possibly thinking about trading. has 98k, dark green. exterior is in great condition, interior showed some wear. cracked leather and what not. engine bay (1uzfe!) looked new. took it for a test drive. drove quiet and refined but it wasnt very fast even compared to mine. i still like the way mine drives more. the dealer is ok with a straight trade, but i just couldnt get myself to do it right now. kind of has a grandma-car feel to it. opinions?

edit- my car has 62k by the way

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.

ya im not a huge fan of the color, and on top of the cracks, there is what looks to be a cigarette burn in the back seats. has sunroof and spoiler. headlights are starting to yellow.

didnt take pics while i was there. here is the only one from the online ad

I was under the impression that most people would rather have a sc300 for the 2jz(even though it's n/a)

besides, have you checked on the blue book value of this thing?

I just cannot stand cracks in leather, it just ruins it for me

also, that v8 SHOULD be able to do a low 7 sec 0-60 where as yours does it in more like 8 and a half

ya most opt for the sc300 for 2jzgte swap and because it came standard with manual. however, the 1uz is a very well engineered, overbuilt engine with lots of potential 1uz. ive heard some say the 1uz is even better than the 2jz, just isnt as well known as a performance engine. the worn interior and the color are what is keeping me from saying yes right now. not to mention it wasnt overly impressive driving and its not near as sexy. but its a lexus with a 4.0 v8 and rwd... 250hp and 260ftlb. im torn right now.

yes the mileage is also a drawback as it would be my daily driver, and i drive a decent amount.

and jay, it was quicker, just nothing exciting. in one review i read it has a 0-60 time of 6.9s. i prefer the celicas steering and pedal feel much more. hard to describe, but my car just felt more solid.

if the v8 came in a standard, I'd be all over it... also, if you find an 97+ you get some vvti and and extra 40 hp in the 1uz, plus the sweet front bumper and tails

1UZFE weighs 2lb heavier than the 2JZGTE. Only bad thing that I can really see is that it came only in Automatic.

the other bad thing is the obvious fact that it has little aftermarket support

i dont mind automatic. there is an adapter made to use a manual tranny. not that i would any time soon, but its there as a possibility.

If your looking to get rid of your car, why not trade? The Lexus is worth more than your car is; if you dont want it, re-sell it and make a couple thousand.

I would like to know this too. And how the auto's hold up. If it's a good auto, there would be no question in trading. I would probably trade anyway. How can you say there isn't any aftermarket support for these things? There are a good bit of people building 1uzfe's, and the sc300-400 share the same platform as the Supra.

I've always wanted (and will have) a nice SC. For us coupe owners, it's a logical evolution upward biggrin.gif Realistically though, they are bulletproof cars built like luxury tanks, and they hold value really well, even when old, which is another nice plus. If refinement is what you want, look no further

I say they have little support because the other engine available is the 2jz, and I don't think anyone can argue against the fact that the 2jz has alot more aftermarket potential

no sc300's available locally frown.gif and i had to talk the dealer over for a straight trade with my celica

1uzfe only came available with an auto tranny. rodshop sells an adapter for the w58 or r154 5-spd tranny (adapter part number ap 15).

edit- decided against the lexus. sure with enought money i could make it fast and good looking, but as it is, i like my car better. like i said, it just felt like a grandma-car. i found another car im looking at trading with, got my fingers crossed smile.gif

very true. but thats not a little money. with the money spent buying wheels, a body kit, new paint (i hate the green), tints, exhaust i could swap a 3s in my car and finish my gt4 front end.

The Celica coupes look athletic next to the SC, but when it's all said and done, the excecution of craftsmanship and quality in the SC puts it on a different playing field. Those folded creases and sweeping hoodline don't age, and iv'e never felt that elegance is trendy... Let's not forget that this car's original sillouete dates back to late 1987 with Toyota's FXV-II at the Tokyo Auto Show wink.gif

Thanks Chanh55, I really enjoyed that piece. I do admit I’m a sucker for the SC's... That video just reinforces my opinion that the car has a very organic, and in turn, timeless shape. I really feel that a lot of people underestimate the first true Lexus models (LS, SC, and the 92-96 ES) because they were initial attempts in a new market for Toyota, and one that many people expected them to fail at ( and with Toyota refusing to do so). In my opinion (and also supported from comments by Toyota in the past), these 3 cars were built to a standard so high above their price points of the time, they directly forced other car companies (read the Germans) to evaluate how they needed to compete in this market. You still see a large majority of these three cars still on the road today, and they are still in fairly high demand considering their age. Not a bad accomplishment for the underdogs of the time smile.gif
