My OEM radio has the 92 - 99 amplified system harness. Thinking i was doing all right, i bought a 6 disc changer, but payed no attention to the pin out of it. This new readio has the 2000 - up harness. See pics below.

IPB Image

I can make the conections with the following kits of Metra:

which look like this:

My current one

The new one

However i still have questions>>>>>

If you see the picture of the new deck:

what is a shield ground. I need to connect this without problems.... Also my old deck has 1 power antenna, the new one has 3 power antennas, what do i do with the rest.

The rest i can pretty go by colors..... Thanks in advance...

well, the 3 power antenna wires i'm assuming are all the same since they're all the same color (blue) and are labelled the same.
perhaps some newer vehicles have more than 1 antenna device? anyway, the power antenna wire only switches the antenna to extend.

crimp off two of the power antennas, if you don't need them, dont use em.

cut the old toyota female harness coming from the vehicle, color match and crimp the new toyota female harness. i'm not sure if you're trying to connect a newer factory head unit to your vehicle, or just going aftermarket. if you're doing aftermarket, disregard this whole post.

i was thinking of doing a similar connection, let me know how this works out for you.

I am doing a factory 6 disc toyota OEM from a 2000 + amplified system, to my car, this new one is 20 pins. My car is the amplified system with 15 pins. I can disregard the the extra power antennas, but where to put the shield ground. The rest i can simply do by color coding. I will post pictures of the stereo once i get home and i recieve my harness in the mail...

if i were you, i'd combine the shield ground and the regular ground together into the black wire from the old harness. that or i would create a whole new ground all together

Good and bad news. The conversion of the 16 pin amp harness to a 20 pin Harness worked. I can prety much use the harness viceversa. Which is really cool. I hooked up the radio and worked like a charm.
And pretty much i can hook up my radio to a newer amp, in case mine blows out.

However the cd is dirty, the optical needs probably cleaning or replacement. I guess one more obstacle.

It can be done, thanks lovo. I hooked up the shield and normal ground together, and the harness i bought only had 1 power antenna. (bought it from BestKits.com Funny thing though, it did not have the Illum (-) wire, so i did not hook it up. I dont see anything different, except that turning on the lights does not dim my radio, which is good......

As soon i can get my cd fixed, it is enjoy time....

By the way anybody knows were to get an optical cd pickup for a fujitsu ten, just wondered...

HA!

great! i'm really, really happy for you. this makes me excited to think my next mod will include a scion head unit. =)

i generally eliminate illumination or the dimmer wire on all of my installs. it makes the process run smoother, and even when trying to do it... its a big pointless hassle. ofcourse unless you want your radio dimmed down. haha

how did you get the harness to connect to the back of the new radio? was that available on that website? or did you cut it from the vehicle?

Here is the story, i got the 16 pin plug with an amp i got from ebay. The harness was already cut in half. I looked in ebay for the original Factory oem harness. Its Made by metra or bestkits. I soldered them together based on the above diagrams and voila. Time to make this mod only 30 mins. Now a sion head unit is probably a little larger than the hole in the celica, thats why I did not go for it. Newer factory radios use a digital amp, and not our analog amp, so if the unit is not amplified it might not work with the factory celica amp.

Here are some pics if anybody is interested....

thats not too bad, i prefer the 3M little crimp heads for a better connection and it looks a lot more neat than electric tape tongue.gif

and its also reversible

i need to see if it fits or not... but if it does i'm diving into it.

that or an alpine head unit

who knows...

in order to do the illumin. wires you'll need a few things...

electrical tape, and advil or equivalent.

maybe a wire stripper... but w/e you do, it'll be a headache.

good luck =)

you can't mess it up, it'll just cause problems. wierd ass problems

Well, after a few weeks of waiting to get my cd repaired, im here, ready to show off my new radio. Thanks to everybody (especially lovo). Hope this inspires another soul. Why do this? Well of the advantages,

1. Have 6 original cd inside at a time, (saves time rather than burning into mp3.
2. Stock Look. (im Picky)
3. Im using my original amp (6th generation)
4. I can use a second amp for subs (once i boy a new battery)
5. Using a special adaptor from PIE, I can hook up an IPOD, MP3, or XM radio, and still be OEM
6. More powerful unit, than original.

Well I bought the unit from ebay, it came damaged, but it has been repaired.

One thing i found is be careful with the unit year, for a perfect fit it has to be a 2002 or older model, with no sides, meaning the metal flushes with the plastic. Otherwise some serious mods need to be done to the bezel. Also our amp is analog. Newer radios use a digital amp. And then you will have to find the space for the amp. I went for safe, rather than sorry. My next mod to this radio will be blue buttons.

Tools I used.

1. Solder Tool
2. Solder wire
3. Shrink cables.
4. Wiring guide.
5. 1 OEM harness and 1 aftermarket Factory Harness.
6. RCA outputs that are conected to the rear input speaker wires.
7. 6 hours of time to individually solder, shrink, pull my hairs and drink soda.

Tips. Solder all three power antennas, hook the shield ground with ground together. I left the Ilum(-) alone....

well I dont want to bother anyone else, here it is.
