decided to paint my valve cover again, since i had it off and it was pretty dirty. i really wanted to paint it a metalic gold, but it seems like no one sell that color in a high temp paint. anyway, here is how it turned out.

How do you clean it before you paint it? My valve cover is pretty dingy (at least it matches my car!) and it seemed almost impossible to clean when I had it off the motor. Someday I'd like to paint it (or maybe just clean it) back to a nice clean aluminum color.

i used a paint stripper on it first. that removed a lot of the old paint i had on there as well as any grease there was. then i cleaned the surface with alcohol. then i did 3 coats of primer... masked off the letting with tape and painted it blue. then 3 coats of paint ..and 3 coats of clear.

for a 3SGE, would i just remove the plug cables, plugs, unscrew the valve and paint? Or do i have to prep the engine first (drain oil?)?

you don't need to drain the oil. just need a new valve cover gasket.

and yeah, I think it's by dupli-color. my friend did his car with a metallic blue. and I think they had metallic gold there too.

What do you think?

polishing it will take a lot of time and effort to get right and it might not last too long. if you can, you should have it powder coated.

polishing takes lots of time and effort, but looks incredible when done right.
clearcoating it with hi temp clear will really extend the life of the parts shine, and make it easier to keep it clean.
