so, as some of you may know, supershannon77 (shannon & jim) recently bought RJB23's car, and have had some...shall we say.."interesting" issues with it since she's had it.
after the fiasco @ CSP several weeks ago (wheel falls off, rear wheel cylinder blows, front caliper FALLS off (no, not the same one the wheel fell off!) and JDM guy got a good look at the car, we decided that it really needed some help.
well, it turns out it needed more that even what we thought, as last weekend, at the DWG meet, the tranny basicly locked up solid on her.
so, after talking about a plan of action for a couple days, Jeff, (Defgeph, your friendly neighborhood RC King) decieded JDM guy needed to jump into action.
so, saturday morning, jenn and i headed out to NJ to hook up with jeff, and shannon and crew to do what we could to get them up and running again.

we arrived in NJ and were greeted by a barely awoke, but happy and ready to work shannon:

IPB Image

once everyone had theyre morning coffee, and i had my redbull, we were all ready to get to work!

IPB Image

once we got all the non-essensials out of the way, we got down to buisness, and started tearing things out.
heres jeff, giving jim the lowdown on whats hapenning.

IPB Image

JDM guy. we're all buisness, all the time. even when we're under your car. (notice the bluetooth equipped jeff!!)

IPB Image

once we got the tranny off, we discovered nothing terribly out of the ordinary, just a worn clutch. we noticed a couple of the springs we're pushing on the metal like they we're trying to come out, but no damage to the pressure plate, flywheel, or anything else that gave us the indication that they had been rubbing, or would have caused the tranny to lock up like it did.
so, the decision was made. time for a new tranny. so, jeff, the MAN, put in a few calls to some local 6GC members, and stevenson (culpable04) came thru BIG time, and sourced us a non-lsd E153 out of a 94 lexus es300.
we drove over to newark, met up with steve, brought back the tranny and we to installing it.
first the 2 clutch disks.

IPB Image

the inside of the new tranny, once jeff cleaned it out with a couple cans of brake cleaner.

IPB Image

the rear main seal. looks like it was never done...for shame!!! wink.gif its got a new one in there now!!

IPB Image

the offender:

IPB Image

shannon, transfering over a couple things, working hard:

IPB Image

dirty girl!!!! wink.gif

IPB Image

this is how NOT to do a rear mount bracket on a E-153 equipped 3sgte swap.
ST-205 bracket, and shifter cables will be done soon (dustin is the MAN with the UK hookups!!)

IPB Image

MMMM yummy! smile.gif

IPB Image

with the help of some brute force, (AKA, Jim. lol)

IPB Image

we got the new tranny up and into place without much of a hitch at all.

IPB Image

we got 99% of the stuff back on the car, and decieded we'd had enough for the night, so the following morning we finished up hooking up the intake, a couple intercooler pipes, and the battery, filled her with fresh fluids, and took her for a few runs up and down the street to see how we did.
happy to report that all is good, the car now shifts thru all 5 gears, and reverse without too much hassle (the 205 cables and bracket will finish that off) and up and downshifts nice and smoothy.

IPB Image

smile.gif
another mission accomplished by JDM guy, yo!!!!

btw jeff (when you read this) .... i think the original clutch looks like a spec stage 1. but its pretty clear how much better the new stage 2 center section is from the old one that people had problems with.

i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.

let me get this strait...

a guy from Massachusetts and a guy from NY went to Jersey to help change a clutch/swap a tranny for someone you met 2 times (knew them for about 4 days) ??? and had another guy back in RI sourcing shifter cables and another guy in Jersey who got you a newer tranny the same day with no notice ???

now that's teamwork thumbsup.gif

JDM Guy FTW

I'm glad that rear main seal fit, I called like 3 places and nobody even had listings for it so when the last place said 'sure no problem I can have it for you tomorrow' I wasn't sure it would be the right part.

I'm so happy we could finally get our hands on that car. This swap was a disaster, short cuts, wrong parts, missing part, bolts were loose, no signs of locktite anywhere.

If this car didn't get the attention it got this weekend, these great people could have been seriously hurt. I could not believe some of the things going on in this car.

The reasons I helped complete strangers, they are from 6GC, they are very nice people, I didn't want to see them get hurt by this car.

In the future, I'd like to tear out that motor. Who knows what gremlins are hiding in there.

When ever you see a swapped Celica for sale online, skip it. If you want a swapped Celica buy a car, buy a clip. Do it yourself.

Last piece of information. When you you future swappers put in this E153 tranny. Which IMHO is a big waste of a tranny in our cars.

Buy ST205 Shifter Cables, Buy a ST205 rear tranny bracket.

So....the car is running so much better once we get those few parts it should be much better. Manny and Jeff both will need to look over things bc we all think that the car was done in a rush and things were just slapped on. Thats why i want everyone to know even if the car looks beautiful do the swap urself.

Hey.... Steff, Tina, and Jenn wanna let u no that there is a new women in this EC6gc Crew and I am ready to take the role on!!!

Thanks again for all those who helped out...I look forward to making my car better one thing at a time!!!

I could not have done it with out 6GC!!!!

this kind of thing is why i worry about selling my car. i want to make sure the next owner is prepared to own a swapped car. which it seems like shannon is (or atleast has incredible help from EC6GC).

it makes me nervous to imagine my car going through such strife a few months down the line.

As long as your honest and properly disclose any issues, you won't have problems.

Ok I've had about as much as I can take of this.

First off manny and Jeff you guys are both making assumptions based on one side of the story. You guys need to talk to the other side before you make assumptions and post them all over the internet and run your mouths to everybody.

The car when it left my possession was in great shape! The wheel falling off was not my fault, the wheels that are on the car (rims) are not the same ones that were on the car when the car was sold, if that gives you an idea of how well the car has been taken care of for the past 4 or 5 months. I had the car for over 2 years I had zero problems with the brakes at all and the calipers were never removed by me. The rear brakes were perfectly fine when it was sold I never had a problem out of them. The tranny shifted absolutely fine, with the exception of it being a little difficult to shift into reverse because of the short shifter (it was the same way with the stock st tranny). The rear mount that you guys are complaining about was fabbed by a shop that specializes in swaps, and imports the same shop that did the exhaust called auto lab here in ky. I drove the car on the swap for almost 2 years and not one time did I have a single mechanical problem with it, with the exception of the alternator dieing from normal wear and tear.

Neither you or Jeff can say what has been done to the car since it has left my possession. To assume that all these problems existed before the car was sold is not only ignorant but pure bias on Jeff and Manny's part. Yea its nice that you guys helped them out, but there is no telling what has been done to the car in the last 4 or 5 months while it has been in their possession.

Being mods you would think that you would be a little more careful about the things you say on here, but I guess being a mod just means that you can say whatever you want and get away with it, whether it is the truth or not.

Well when buying any used car you can't expect it to be perfect. So you should always go over the car really well, or a pro if you don't know a lot about cars. Even then things break. Blaming the guy who owned the car before may not be totally fair. I don't know anyone involved so I won't pass judgment, but it is possible the car could be a lemon, or the new owner just drove the wheels off... literally.

this has nothing to do with them being mods or anything like that. they (as well as other people) where there in person when these things happened and they are giving their side of the story.

I have the same problem but I have the e153. 1st to second shifts fine under normal acceleration but hard acceleration grinds. Do you have a short shifter?

Proving u knew there was a problem when u sold the car.

edit: after going back through and reading your post again.

randy's find negates those 2 key aspects of your defense.

It's funny how stories change....

I've seen this car in person too, and I've help fix it, as well as spending a good bit of time on the phone with Shannon about it.

The wheels aren't your fault. Chalk that up to someone else.
The rest of the car, directly or indirectly, is.

I was the one driving it when the R front caliper fell off.
Nobody had messed with it.
The upper caliper bracket bolt had fallen off some time prior, leaving the lower bolt to hold the caliper on.
It worked for a while, but finally loosened up.

I helped replace the rear brakes that were totally shot.
Rear drum brakes don't wear out in 4 months.
Or 4 years.
And these weren't just worn, they were cracked and old. Probably the original shoes. Or maybe just the second set. Either way, they [and the wheel cylinders] hadn't been looked at in a LONG time.
The engine bay was thrown together, the wiring was a mess.

What ever happened with that boost problem you had?
Did you ever fix it?
Or did you just say screw it?

This car was thrown together.
Money and time was definitely saved at it's expense.

I'm not claiming you deliberately sold them a half assed car, though it's entirely possible, judging from some prior posts of yours.

But you are the shining example of why NOT to buy a car someone else has heavily modded.
Unless you have either the personal ability to go over the car and fix what is wrong, or you have a thick enough wallet to pay someone else to.

X2.
i know the wheels wernt your doing.
but can you explain the totally MISSING tranny shield?
or the fact the rear mount bracket had 1 bolt holding it in?
and if a "shop that specilizes in swaps" made that bracket, i hope they NEVER do another 3s swap in a celica.
the bracket was totally engineered wrong, it wasnt even able help keep the motor stable and stop it from rocking back and forth, the way that mount is designed to do.
this has nothing to do with jeff, or i being "mods"
it had to do with buying a car, thats been modded, and quite shoddily at that.
end of story.

Rob, please dont put the mods down. They have done nothing but help. I had only talk to them over the internet and when the tire fell off(doesn't mean its ur fault) without knowing me they rush to get the car on the road. Once all the brakes gave out they help us get to Manny house where many people supplied parts and help get the car running. People didnt get home until 2 or 3 am and had work the next morning but they still stayed to help. Than a few weeks later at another meet they look over they car finding many problems that 1. I never would think to check and 2. I would never touch. After driving a lil the tranny just locks up and not only did once again Jeff and Erik come to help Erik also let me use his AAA. After that they gave me rides home and Manny and Jeff came a week later to get the car moving again. They have been there and witness all these problems. Why put them down? What people do you know that would help you like that? If you would ask me the mods on here couldnt be better.

Here I am Rob leave the mods out of this all they did was help. If you have a problem please just take it up with me I am the one who bought the car.

Just a few things I would like to add. I still have the emails I can post up. I paid you extra to replace the power steering pump and we started driving 5 mins and it was completly drained. You could have just told me you were not able to fix it. I should have realized just the power steering pump was a tough job for you and than I should have thought about how the rest of the car was put together.
The car looks beautiful and I can't say anything bad about that but I almost wish it didn't look so nice because than I would have taking the time to look over your post and get more info before I rushed to get the car because it "look" like it was put together well.

~Shannon

ok guys... i think a lot of these posts are PM material... There's no need for pointless bickering and finger pointing over an internet forum... I think this is a great fixing thread, but the bs stuff could be left out i think because it takes away from the actual fixing of the car

Sorry, but I don't agree.

This is a PERFECT example for folks thinking about buying a modded car to look at and hopefully make them look thier prospective car over better before they buy it.

Bad things need to be aired at times as well as a lesson to others, not kept hidden so no one learns from it.

I agree with that ^ but the little things aren't necessary, 'he said she said' doesn't accomplish anything and is taken from each persons perspective so it's biased each way. Lay out the facts, the problems, but not the bickering
