I'm finishing my 3sgte swap this week and we haven't got to the issue of the downpipe yet. Do I HAVE to buy a new one, or can I just use my stock one? I have a 96 celica st.

You can probably still use your stock one if you want to keep the factory o2 sensor bung location where it's at. All you need to do is cut off about 1 1/2" from the bung and use a short pipe with the same diameter or larger and weld it on the 3sgte's downpipe (if its cut). Here's a picture of what I mean by mating the two pipes together, and this was made by a local exhaust shop:

See in the 1st picture, that's the pipe that's welded to join the two downpipes together. The other alternative is to weld the exhaust piping to the 3sgte's downpipe from front to rear, so it's just one big long pipe from the downpipe. I also suggest installing a flex pipe between the exhaust piping and the engine's downpipe. An o2 sensor bung will need to be installed on this setup though. So drill a hole in the piping closest to the downpipe (flexpipe) and weld a o2 sensor bung on there.

3SGTE swap with ST exhaust parts = tooooo much restriction for your engine, you should be looking at increasing the exhaust diameter ( 2.75 -3.00 inches ) the increase of back pressure is a no no for your new engine, even if compare stock for stock, the st exhaust stock is 1.75 ~? and the 3sgte is 2.25 ~?

it can be done, is just not good idea; but totally possible

So you suggest a new exhaust? That sucks. I just spent 3300 on everything else and I still have to pay for labor. I'll check the forums for something cheap

Just by what you need off summitracing like a high flow cat . converter, resonator, flex pipe, and rear muffler. Then get an exhaust shop to install all of them for you on a straight through 3" exhaust. If I paid $135 to put my exhaust on I can imagine it being alot cheaper up there in the states.
