Hey guys i was just wondering if we have some sort of pollen filter that we need to replace from time to time, because im getting an awful wet flower/dead leaves smell when the a/c is on. In my moms 2000 jetta she had a pollen filter and she had to change it when this happend to her?

Thanks

You don't have one.
The system could still have pollen and/or dust in it.
Or a mouse nest. biggrin.gif

Pick up some AC freshner and spray it in the system.
You can also spray in the cowl on the pass side with the blower on outside air.
This will suck it through the system.

It's really hard to get the smell out sometimes though.

yeah... if/when i get motivated enough id like to pull majority of the plumbing out, or at least clean it very well when the dash is apart to have it smell fresh again... mine doesnt smell bad enough for all that, just maybe the first 10-15 seconds when i first turn it on after a while then it goes normal

i asked a master toyota tech at work and he said that the smell is from condensation pooled up somewhere and changing the cabin air filter probably wouldn't change it as well as you'd think. i get that smell really bad so i run my ac on the outside air thing instead of recirculate. BG products also sells some stuff that helps.

I get that nasty smell when using recirculate, and the A/C doesn't really work in that mode, very warm and humid. A/C Works fine taking air from outside.

Based on this, do you think there is a problem with part of the A/C system, or are my recirculate ducts just clogged or something?

Um, I had this issue a few years ago. Turns out its not the AC at all. (For me at least)

Check your spare tire tub. I apparently had a improper seal (toyota did not put the seal around some rear wiring. It was there but not placed in the hole.) So when it rained it would drain down into my spare tire well. This caused water to pool up and not drain properly. Stagnant water smells pretty bad and recirculated air made it smell horrible.

After I drilled holes through the plastic drain plugs in the spare tire well and cleaned it out I have not had an issue. I also properly install the wire seal as well.

Did you leave the drilled out holes or did you fill back in? If it's not too much trouble, could you take a couple pics of where and what you did? You are talking about the spare tire well in the back right?

Yes in the back. When you take out the tire you will see rubber plugs that are about 2 inch diameter. You can take them out by prying them up.

I took a drill and put 5 holes in it. Made the shape you see on a Dice. That way if water were to get in, it will drain properly. So yes, I left the holes afterward.

Where were the wires that didn't have the seal inserted at?

If you take out the rear interior panel. There is a thick blue wire that connects to a black one. They are for the tails 1 set on each side. The blue wire passes through the body and did not have the seal ring properly placed.

and yes the blower motor is behind the glove box. I think there are 4 screws that hold it in. Very easy to get in and out. The glove box is also 4 screws.

My seals seemed to be properly installed, and no water in the spare tire well. I will try taking the glove box out and removing the blower motor or spraying a/c system cleaner directly into the blower.
