yep, just another sign of our falling society. I remember the days of Cal Ripken Jr. when he would stay at the park after games for Hours just to sign baseballs for kids. He broke records because he loved the game, not for personal fame and fortune.
Barry bonds is an American embarrassment in my book. He’s right up there with several of the other morons in various sports throughout this country. |

Who cares...i think way too much is being made of performance enhancing drugs. How many professional athletes do u think take andro or steroids or other professional enhancements? Im sure Barry Bonds isnt the only one in baseball or in any other major sports thats taking these supplements. U guys love the so beloved Hank Aaron, but u guys probably didnt know that he went under the same scrutiny that Bonds is goin under now because of his skin color.
Congrats Bonds. -------------------- Note to new members. Discussions such as the ones below are forbidden.

My point is that there will always be haters when somebodys close to breaking major records . Roger Maris went through it. Hank Aaron went through it (because of his skin color in a racist time period). McGwire went through it and now Bonds went through it; hell some people didnt want Emmit Smith to break Payton's all time rushing record. If performance enhancing drugs made such a difference, how come McGwire and Rafael Palmeiro isnt up there with Bonds and Hank Aaron? Fact of the matter is that you still have to hit the ball which takes skill in itself. The fact that Bonds is the home run king and is also ranked up there as one of the most walked batters is a feat in itself. To have 756 home runs and to be intentionally walked as many times as he has is truely incredible. Obviously it will aid in most other sports like football but i dont see how it aids in baseball. Sports like wrestling, football and other physically demanding sports, i can see how that would be cheating, but in a sport like baseball where the bat does all the work, i just dont see it and i dont buy into that increased bat speed bit either. I'm not saying Bonds isn't good. Thats why he's up there with Aaron and not McGwire and Palmeiro, but controversy with steroids and the Balco stuff is slightly different than being hated for something you can't change, like your skin color. 'Tis all.

Everybody will have their own seperate point of views on this but thats just mine. The only problem with that logic my friend is that there were no haters around when Cal Ripkin broke Lou Gehrig's record, no one accuses Manny Ramierez of doping when he is on pace to break Hack Wilsons RBI record. The reason Palmero isn't up there with Bonds* is because he never was a power hitter, I don't think one time in his carreer did someone point him out and say "That guy is going to have a chance at catching Aaron". McGwire on the other hand is up there with them. He may not have put up the same carreer numbers they did but he played a significantly shorter carreer, partially due to the heat from the Andro ordeal. Not to take anything away from Bonds*. He is a great hitter, he grew up with two of the best hitting coaches a guy could ask for. I would say yes it is a feat that he could even come close to the record in recent years being as he is intentionally walked roughly 200 times a year. On the other hand I dont see how you cannot honestly say you dont believe that steroids have an effect on how hard you hit the ball. Its not that steroids make you a better hitter (that is an inaccurate statement), Steroids make you a stronger hitter physically. You will still miss a 95 mph fastball around your shoulders, you aren't going to hit the sinker that falls off at the plate, you will however be able to punish that hanging curve belt high middle in. All because of bat speed. You may not want to believe it but it pays a huge part in how far the ball travels. Also I would suggest researching "steroids" before you pin hole them to sports like football and wrestling. There are many of them out there that do more then just make you big and strong. I added the * to his name just so everyone can get used to seeing how it will be printed from now on in the record books. I gotta say though, I think it will look pretty good with a 2 next to it in about 5 or 6 years if A-Rod stays healthy. P.S. He just turned 32 This post has been edited by basementdweller: Aug 8, 2007 - 1:19 PM |

Steriods are not just used to make you stronger or hit a ball harder, they also repair your muscle fibers alot quicker.
Bonds used steriods to repair himself. He is old and needed them, if he did use them and doesnt get caught then more power to him. It was not much of an aid in helping him achieve this, look at him a while ago he was still one of the best ball players alive. Bonds may have been juicing but it was not aiding him that much to achieve this goal. |

^^ exactly. Everyone thinks that steroids are just for getting HUGE. They have a lot of other uses that are relatively healthy. But on the other hand there are also the people that abuse them and take them in order to get bigger and stronger. I say good for Bonds, only Bonds, his supplier, and God know if he juiced. I will be a lot happier when A-Rod breaks Bonds record though.

Just like in golf. So when i hear "steroids helps increase their bat speed to hit the ball further" thats a load of crap. Thats why when you see golf distance competitions, all the competitors are overweight men much like John Daly. I also dont believe that a corked bat will make a ball travel further. I just dont buy into that either. People look at Bonds body his rookie year and what his body looks like now...the dudes been playing baseball for 2 decades. Do i think that he used enhancers? most likely but that shouldnt take away from what he's accomplished. Performance enhancers in my opinon just doesnt make that much of an impact in a sport like golf and baseball. Thats just what i believe. I personally hate him. it's called CHEATING people. i really think he shouldn't get credit for this. It's so stupid. If you compare stats, Aaron had 12,364 at bats in his career while Bonds had 9,774 at bats (Bonds 22 seasons, Aaron 23). Aaron played 3,298 games whereas Bonds played 2,958 games. Meaning Aaron has played more games per season than Bonds has. That just makes the feat more incredible. Enhancers may have helped a little but i doubt that it couldve helped that much. In hindsight Aaron may have hit a lot of home runs but he also had so many more at bats than the players that play today. If every basebally player had about 12,000 at bats in their career, that record wouldve been broken by A LOT of guys. Guaranteed. Also no other baseball player has been walked more within a 5 year span. Through 2000-04, Bonds has been WALKED 872 times. The next closest? Babe Ruth with 691 walks in 1920-24. He's been walked 2,426 times in his career which is most in history. Put that into consideration when you count the homeruns also. Heres the shocker...Between the ages of 21-29 (8 year span) he hit 253 homeruns. Between the ages of 35-43 (8 year span), he hit 334. Thats not that much of a difference in homeruns really. So ask urself again. Did his enhancers really help him THAT much? NOPE. And if u doubt the credibility of my stats, then ur doubting ESPN. * Bonds Career By Age Age Games AB BA HR AB per HR 21-29 1,264 4,456 .284 253 17.61 30-34 678 2,311 .298 169 13.67 35-39 712 2,175 .331 261 8.33 40-43 304 832 .290 73 11.40 So before u go on buying into the medias bull, get to know the facts. You make a good argument up until this paragraph. Thats a shocker, but not in the right sense. In the time where most players do their best, when they are young, are able to heal quickly and develop the most muscle easier, he does worse than 14 years later? This statistic by itself has to make people wonder. In addition, those stats you posted on the bottom: QUOTE * Bonds Career By Age Age Games AB BA HR AB per HR 21-29 1,264 4,456 .284 253 17.61 35-39 712 2,175 .331 261 8.33 Take a look at the AB per HR. When he's younger, he's hitting a home run ever 17.61 at bats. When he's 14 years older, he's hitting a home run ever 8.33 ABs? He's effectively doubling his efficiency as he gets older? I don't doubt experience helps but thats a big jump. Hank Aaron hit 299hr between 21-29yrs (5,472 ABs) & 203hr between 35-39 (2,399 Abs). Babe Ruth hit 280hr between 21-29yrs (3,462 ABs) & 192hr between 35-39 (2,333 ABs). Barry Bonds hit 253 between 21-29yrs (4,456 ABs) & 261hr between 35-39 (2,175 ABs). I'm not saying he did or did not, but those stats, the fact that he increases his HRs as he gets older, I find a little suspicious. Hes a great athlete none the less...70% of baseball players in the year of the strike bulked up using a form of performance drug. sosa, palmiero, brady anderson, giambi, mcgwire, etc...baseball fans lost interest, so they got the players to get bigger and hit more homers in hopes to bring fans back. so in 95, the ball was changed, players changed and fans came back. also, if you notice bonds' bat, its maple which the ball flys off if hit right, so put strength, agility, techonology and you get a natural hitter. is the record tainted? no...i havent seen bonds hit a weak homerun that barely cleared the wall. he got himself in shape with help, so what...many substances werent banned in that time so its not all bonds' fault. accept the fact theres a new home run king and move on...arod will pass hime and he will be scruntinized as well.
