Did a quick search, but couldnt find the answer I'm looking for. Sorry if I missed it.

I'm looking at replacing my alt, but dont know which one I should be looking for. Car is a 98 chassis with a jdm 93 mr2 engine.

I know the mr2 mounting brackets are different from the 5sfe's, but is the actual part different?

When I call the shop should I be asking for an alt for a 98 celica (5sfe motor) or for a 93 mr2?

it depends what was put on there.

the only differences are in the harness plugs. so you can just wire in a 5sfe harness plug and use that, if you want.

Sorry for the xpost, I wasn't sure what section it should have been in.

To change the harness plug, do I need to cut the wire, or does it just plug/unplug?

Are there any differences with the way they mount? In a celica chassis.

they should all mount the same, as long as you have the correct bracket on there (and you do). then just find a 5sfe harness plug, cut off your old one, match the colors up, and solder the new one in.

why not just buy a turbo Mr2 alternator if thats whats there now.

why would you want to hack your harness and crap up when you can just get the right one?

because we are not 100% sure if the mr2 alt fits in the 5sfe or st185 bracket, when it gets relocated to the front of the motor.

you should probably look up the part number thats written on your old alt. that will tell you where it came from, and what you need to replace it with.

Aye tha's an idea. I never thought of looking up the old P/N. I was also going to call toyota and ask parts to cross reference the P/N's for a celica and an mr2. I didn't see any physical differences between the two, from back when I had 2 celica's, and they both looked the same, and as far as I could tell, they mounted in the same spots.

Art, why would I need a 5sfe plug for? Wouldn't I need the 3sgte plug to go with the 3sgte engine harness?

How can I check to see if my alt is dying? Would it be better to use a volt/ohm meter or to start the car, and unhook the neg terminal? How would I check using the multimeter?

you can remove the alt, and take it to any car parts store. they will put it on their bench tester and test it for free.

different alts may look the same, but the harness plugs dont match up. so if you were to buy a 5sfe alt, you would need to have a 5s plug soldered on.

but like i said before, if you look up the part number, and replace it with the same thing, then it will all be just plug and play.

Got the part number, and called 2 dealerships to confirm. They both said it was for a 6gc. I tried to cross reference with mr2 part numbers, but they said 3 different part numbers came up for a 3sgte engine, so no dice with the cross referencing.

3sgte and v6 camry = circle plug, 5sfe = oval plug
