So I have been trying for the past ooooh 4 months at this point to find the shimless buckets I need for my 3rd GEN 3SGTE. I ordered a bucket from a 1ZZ to insure a good fit and that the range of shims would work for my machined head.

the bucket didn't fit... far to small - its completely different size then my existing buckets. I poked around today - visited my Toy dealer, and this board, and the 1ZZ motor has buckets and the 2ZZ has shims so I didn't order the wrong bucket.

so I have two conclusions - they ordered the wrong Bucket (possible) OR the bucket size from the 2nd gen 3SGTE is different then the 3rd GEN 3SGTE. I don't know why it hadn't come to me before... I do have a old 2nd gen 3SGTE kicking around so I will unpack it and have a peek.

Film at 11.

Cheers

And the answer is.... my Toy Dealer "Eff'd Up" The bucket I received from them the first time was wrong. The 2nd gen Bucket is the same size as the 3rd gen Bucket

Cheers-

I had to double check what buckets to use for the 3sgte after reading your first post. it didnt make sense that the 1zz didnt fit. good thing you got it squared away.

So I am questionining the ability of using 1ZZ Buckets on my 3rd gen 3SGTE.

After measuring up all the values it shows that my range of new shims required is 2.94 - 3.20, all of which fall under spec of acceptable values.. However, according to the 1ZZ book

"Lifter are available in 35 sizes in increments of 0.020 mm
(0.0008 in.), from 5.060 mm (0.1992 in.) to 5.740 mm
(0.2260 in.)."

the thickness of the bucket - sans shim - is approx 3 mm. so taking that into account, the 1ZZ motor does not offer any shim sizes that will work for my motor....

crap

solution- buy new valves. toyota valves are ~$16 a piece, or you can find nice aftermarket valves like FERREA bowdown.gif if i remember correctly, new valves can be ordered long. i could be wrong about that but my machine shop had to shave mine down slightly...

really trying to avoid that solution as the head was assembled by people far better at this game than me as well as it is installed on the block - looks like its shims for me..

mike, just FYI, chrisK grinds the valve stems to get the clearance he wants when he does the shimless conversion.

Hello!
The 2zz shims work great, both for the 3s-gte engines and the Supra engines as well. You have to messure the thicknes of the bucket incl shim to know what thicknes the new shimless buckets need to be... Me myself are going for the convension this winter. and it never is any problem.

nice build pics on your site!
i'd love to see a thread with the details of the build.

i think the problem mike is having right now is that he cant get thick enough shims.

1ZZ, not 2ZZ. the 2ZZ uses a tiny cap that goes over the top of the valve. the 1ZZ uses a bucket that coveres the spring. and yes you can use the 1ZZ buckets in 3S-GTE, 2JZ-GTE, 5S-FE, 1MZ-FE.

The problem i hade this spring was that after the engineshop hade made new valveseals the valves came to
high up. The problem for me was then that the shims that you can buy from toyota wasnt thin enough. This problem was solved by removing the valves and them have the top of the valve machined down 0,2mm than there were no problem using the right shims from toyota.
Maby this will help...!

Word - I have the opposite - the gaps are all too big for 1ZZ buckets but not too big for 3rd Gen 3SGTE Shims.. so Im going to order from Fensport or Giltrap in NZ ... not a big deal... I'll go new valves when upgrade the valve train some time in the future...
