Let me through this out here: I've been thinking of findind an old 88-90 MR-2 with a 4agze. I want to do this to get the engine at LOW cost. I was thinking of re-building the engine with forged pistons and a JUN crankshaft. I would re-build the head, but I don't really see much of a need for major upgrades to it other than adjustable cam gears. (maybe cam shafts, but as far as porting goes, there isn't a place around here that could do it, so.... I'm rather limited.)
I plan to turbo it. I'd like to get the engine bullit proof if you get my drift. I'd heard it'd be better to build a 20v for a turbo application, but I would think a built early model 4agze would work just as well, and cost FAR less, especially if built properly. Also, I've been reading up on assorted turbos, and was wondering if you guys could go over differences in turbo size, compressor size, etc. What is ideal for our smaller toyota engines? Also, I've seen many CT-26 turbos floating around, and was wondering where I would look for a re-build kit to make them worth while. I've been wearing e-bay out looking at turbos. All I see is T-4 this, and t-3 that. Sometimes TO-4 and t-3\t-4. I'm a bit confused on that part. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Jon |

a 4agze is already supercharged I hope you know so it might be better for you to go after a 4age because it would be cheaper to get, and you could still put all the same stuff in it.

see, that's the whole trich here dude. The GZE engine is built for boost. The SC it has on it doesn't make much power, but a turbo boosting 15-20PSI with forged pistons is gonna snap some driveshafts.

the t3/t04 means it is a hybrid turbo, made with parts from a t3 and a t4 that falls between the two performance and lag wise, but i think that you would not want to go bigger than a t3 on a 1.6 liter engine. you could go bigger, but lag would get bad.

Check out Turbo Corolla for some good information on turboing the 4A-G(Z)E. The 4A-GZE is an excellent platform for a turbo, and can withstand a fair amount of boost on stock internals.

my only concern would be that the early 4agze was not built as strong as the later ones. might be more economical to buy a jdm one and tear it apart instead of trying to build it from scratch. my two cents.

The usdm just had weaker internals, the block and such were the same if I remember correctly. All I would need is the basic parts. I'd be putting in new crank and such. Did any of the 4a series come with oil squirters? Where are the turbo manifolds for a 4a? Jon |

The 4A-GZE and the 20V 4A-GE and the 16V small port(Non-TVIS) 4A-GE all had oil squirters. I did a bit more reading because I'm bored at work right now, and supposedly a stock 4A-GZE can handle up to 10-12 psi of boost reliably.

"A first major revision of the 4A-GZE was done in the 1990 model year solely for the front drive setup as MR2 gave way to the newer and larger 3S-GTE power plant. This second generation of 4A-GZE utilized the now commonly available Japanese market pump gasoline of 102 octane. Accordingly, the compression and boost was raised to produce the 165ps JIS figure. The compression was upped to 8.9:1. The newer engine also utilized the new 4A-GE block and bottom components based on the 90 and later Levin engines, comprising of stronger larger crank and rod journals as well as piston pin and used semi-forged coated pistons. The new 4A-GZE also featured the only DLI (distributor-less ignition) used on the 4A series and the AFM was replaced by the MAP system (latter probably due, more to cost of production, as MAP systems are much cheaper to manufacture)" lower compression on the earlier gen too... bonus! ![]() edit: just found this http://forums.toymods.org.au/index.php?t=m...l_view=&start=0 turbo AW11 running 20 psi on stock 4agze internals... 12.4 @ 118 mph |

I E-mailed that guy with the mean MR-2. I wonder what the Compression on that AW-11 MR-2 is....? I also wonder how much trouble it is to use that AFM set up in stead of my MAP system. This is looking better and better, and are you guys sure the AW-11 has 'piston cooling' oil squirter? I'm going to do research!
Jon Edit: I also read that the 20v head works great with turbo app's. I wonder what all I'd have to do to get that working... Other than buy a stand alone... Compression is 8:1!!! This could become a bad bad man. This post has been edited by FallenHero: Aug 15, 2003 - 12:25 AM |

Ok gang. Here is what I'm setting out to do. I want to build a SW-11 4a-GZE for less than a 3s would cost to put into a ST. So, here is what were looking at.
Old MR-2 from a junk yard or something= 5-600 dollers. I'm looking for garbage here. HOW TO build a 4agze to dominate all: 1.HKS Camshaft - 4AG(Z)E w/ Exhaust Cam - 256 Duration/8mm Valve Lift $287.16 2.HKS Cast Piston Set 81mm Bore Size $548.22 3.HKS Ring Set 81.25mm Bore Size $108.77 4.HKS Adjustable Cam Gear Aluminum $126.18 5.HKS Valve Spring Set $152.28 6.Venom Super Cool Fuel Pump - 4cyl - PFI/L-JET $182.69 7.CENTERFORCE Dual Friction Clutch Disc And Pressure Plate (90% increase in holding capacity) - - from 8/87 - No Weights $406.48 8.Turbo manifold $250 9.Turbo from e-bay $300 10. S-afc $400 =$3265ish And you would obvioulsy need: Intercooler, Pipes, gaskets, etc. Now. with this engine, you would dominate all until your drive shafts exploded. All input is welcome. I was going to do this list this morning,,,, but I woke up in time to be late for work.... : ) Jon |

my safc2 was $300 shipped.
thats a good list, but dont forget that you will need to include the cost of swapping in the engine if you are not doing it yourself, and you might want to have a new tranny to take the abuse of the power that setup would make -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

Which reminds me... those are all NOPI prices, so they can be found elsewhere for far cheaper I'm sure.
