I just wanted to put it out there that I really hate SUV's and the gas that they suck up. Why would a person want to buy a car that gets like 10 mpg?

over in china they have a new car thats a cross between a van and a mini cooper and it gets 60mpg. They have laws about the dimensions and about minimum gas mileage. Why are we not following their lead? And the gov't wastes all their money and our money on technology to build a hybrid SUV which really does not exist as the electricity shuts off at about 40mph. So anyone who drives major roads uses up gas anyway. Unl;ess a family have like six children you don't need a big car. God forbid that children have to share the back of a sedan. Just getting those feelings off my chest.

There is an upcoming law that deals with mileage, XX must be achieved by every vehicle made in 20XX.

i too dislike gargantuan vehicles, even more so the people that drive them. they think that just because their car is 3x bigger they think they can ride up my ass and ill move. how very wrong are they.....

i also hate people that buy trucks and dont use it for what its worth. 99% of the time i see trucks driving around and nothing is in the back. what the hell is the purpose of having a truck if your not going to haul things around. especially when the mpg is very low. total waste. but then again, american's are full of "waste".

I had a newer Grand Cherokee that got about 15-16mpg. Really nice comfortable ride with plenty of features, but then I decided the same thing. I had no real reason to have an SUV with a V8 engine in it as a daily driver, so I sold it and got a little civic for a daily driver, that gets 3 times the gas mileage. smile.gif I do have a gas guzzling wrangler for 'fun' and for safer winter driving when it snows. But I barely put any miles on it, so far about 4,000 this year including a 1,000 mile drive for vacation.

Oh yeah and to forkee- there is a dually truck I've seen around here a few times, LOWERED with some paint job. Is that not the stupidest thing imaginable?

I couldn't have said it better myself. When they ride my ass, I usually slow down to piss them off. On a 2-lane road, I sometimes I slow down and keep pace with a slow car so they can't pass.

It's called freedom..freedom of choice, something my south neighbors seems to be very proud of.

EDIT : If any of you guys frequently go on autoblog, it's disapointing how many people think that automaticaly taxing certain vehicle because of emission, gas mileage / size of vehicle screams automatically "communism or socialism", as if everything is fine as it is and "FREEDOM" should never been walked on no matter what the drive is (like environmental causes).
Selfish eh.

We're all doomed, I'm here to enjoy the ride and get in debts! woohoo!

I remember correctly an argument that made my chuckle inside...

One commenter said exactly what you said, why people rides SUVs and theres only 1 person inside most of the time?
The guy right under said "Well I NEED an SUV, I'm pretty sure your corollas and civic's can't put my yacht down the marina riiiiight?"
The guy replied, which I applaud for, "I see you certain NEED a YACHT RIGHT?"

lol @ people

if its about freedom of choice than they are making a poor decision. when your choice uses up all the gas like 20 years sooner its going to be problem. You go to europe and seeing an suv is really unusual because the people there get it. Gas is about 6 dollars a gallon so they all drive smart cars and it seems like a good use of freedom. Americans on the whole care more bout what the car looks like than the efficiency of it.

i hate it when some kid thinks they are sofa king tite n try to race up n down the streets. my 1.8 four banger versus their turbo diesel. yep. its a nice world we live in where the poor can barely afford gas n the rich just piss it away so they can be cool.

I agree. I used to drive a '90 suburban street-tank. I didn't really like it, but its what my parents gave me when i was 16 (my dad used it to haul stuff so it was just kinda there). Plus I'm about 3 times the size of my parents and my dad's 4th gen celi and my mom's 91 camry was a little less practical.
But I would much rather be in a small car despite my size. One day down the road I wouldn't mind owning like a wrangler or something, but just for weekends or taking on the beach. I'll still have a celica as my daily driver. biggrin.gif

SUVs aren't popular in Europe because the roads are a helluva lot smaller and gas is triple the price.

I think we texans can agree that the number of trucks and SUV down here are uslessly used. But i would have to say that they have a purpose. I owned a Ford F150 1990 and that i had a lot of fun with, i wish i still had it, it was the straight 6 engine, moster puller. great on the beach, not so great off roud because of the weight but still fun, and because ive been in bands since i was 13 it was handy for halling everything around. also it was the first vehical i bought myself so there was a little pride there but thats not the point. The point is that they should be used for fun, halling, and pulling, but daily drivers, not if you can help it.

I heard on NPR a few days ago that a study was done on the pollution in Texas, and if Texas was its own country, it would be the 4th largest polluter in the world because of all the big giant cars and the amount of industry down there.

A lot of people who drive SUVs I think drive them because of the comfort factor - I was one of those people. I originally got my 4Runner because I was in a relationship for 7 years with someone who had 3 kids, so for a family of 5 it made sense compared to cramming the kids in the Civic. After that relationship ended, I kept the 4Runner another two years roughly, and came to realize that I just couldn't justify having it any more even though I LOVED that car! So I sold it to buy my Celica. I love my Celica, but I really miss my 4Runner. I'd've kept it if it got better mileage, and once hybrid SUVs get the mileage a hybrid SHOULD get, I would strongly consider getting one (as long as it's a Toyota!)

I have a lifted tahoe with 35" tires. It gets 6 miles to the gallon. I don't drive it a lot, mostly when I take the dogs somewhere - or on really ****ty days (I'm in Buffalo NY). But, yeah, they are so comfortable, and you can see everything.

So, curse words are automatically censored? That's stupid.

Why do people get SUV's? Why not? Its personal preference.

Why do people buy 30-40 dollar steak and lobster dinners at a restaurant when they're just gonna crap it out the following morning? Why dont they just get a 5 dollar steak from Shop Rite and cook it at home?

becuase it affects not just the person doing it but everyone around them. its a personal preference that the person fails to recognize is a preference of everyone else. just like smoking. if you're gonna smoke, fine. just do it away from me. if you're gonna put yourself in harms way, fine. just do it far from me.

this is the problem that exists because people are selfish and only think of themselves. they don't realize the effects of their actions.

the only reasonable rationale for someone to buy an SUV is if they were going to lug around lots of stuff or more than 4 people. or if they go through a lot of uneven terrain frequently.if interior comfort is the only thing, buy a lexus or a mercedes. if its height, go take a bus.

if you're gonna buy filet mignon only to shat it out later fine, just don't do it in the stall next to me.

if you're gonna buy an SUV, you better know how to drive it AND PARK IT the right way. i hate seeing an SUV in a parking space marked for "compacts"

you really can't compare steak to an SUV. yes they are both luxury items but the byproducts are hardly comparable. plus, would you rather be hit by an SUV or a steak? laugh.gif

why buy an audi rs4 with 12mpg or a s4 with 16mpg, or a lambo ferrari ford gt with 8-12 mpg. Or an evo that gets 16-18 mpg, or a 350z with 16-19 mpg

Because we like certain things in life....get over it.

yes yes!! thats exactly what i mean. blame the chef, not the steak. its not what you have but what you do with it. its not the suvs that are crap, but its the people that use them for purposes other than what they are designed for, or do not have the expertise to maneuver them the correct way.

there are beautiful suvs that are designed to look pretty. and then there are the ones that are designed to be very useful for offroading. a lot of people overestimate their pretty SUVs and end up driving them off the road into other people or their cars. thats my only gripe.

it aint the car's fault

it aint the steak's fault

Yes, but believe it or not, there are many retarded Celica drivers as well...To generalize and say..."All domestics are stupid...all imports are stupid...all SUV's are stupid;" is ignorant. Hate SUVs...i could care less, but dont say people who drive SUVs are stupid. Theres a difference. Know the story before you go off calling people retarded, cuz my godparents work with the disabled and have to drive SUVs and Suburbans so they can fit extra people. I know blue collar workers that need an SUV to carry large items for work, and im sure everybody knows somebody that has a legit reason for owning an SUV.

yes but im sure people know people that have no legit reason at all for driving one,i have no problem at all with people driving SUVs if they use them all the time for work, kids or other activities ,but i personally hate people that drive an SUV as a daily driver and have no kids or a job that requires it...

Knowing SUVs brakes slower, like to roll over, can't steer as fast as car to get out of the way of an obstacle and all at the time same be a death sentence when their 4000 lbs vehicle hit a civic, maybe egoistic? or Ironic?

^ I don't know a lot of people who drive suvs and dream of racing laguna seca......

meaning I'm sure people who drive these cars are fully aware of the limits of these cars. Given there are a few who are completly dumb and cannot drive for crap.

Ill be honest, I drive a small bmw coupe and whenever a suv comes up next to me my butt puckers up real good cuz I'm scared they will not see me and hit me but I'm not going to sit here and say I hate them. My mother drives a 4 runner but we do have a large family. My dad owns a dodge truck, which I like to drive in fact. But then again we do alot of outdoor activities so its use is justifiable.

Just because SUVs have a bad rap for rolling, or demolishing a small car in an accident doesnt make them bad....in fact if you used that logic for all cars, no one would drive anything.

No I dont want to buy that sports car because they go fast and they will cause accidents. No I don't want that toyota yaris becuase one hit and Im a sardine.

As a matter of fact when I have kids I already told my gf that she will not be driving anything smaller than a merc ml of gl suv. I know she can drive, better than any female I know so I feel safe giving her an suv.

All I'm saying is don't blame the car blame the driver

SUVs rolling over is SO late 80s, left over from the crappy wheel base that the first Ford Explorers got when SUVs first gained popularity. The truth of the fact is that SUVs, in terms of safety, have the same variance of safety ratings that sedans have, and are probably (without actually looking it up right now) a hell of a lot safer than our little sport coupes. They're comfortable and convenient, and we Americans love our comfort and convenience.

The truth of the matter is that it really isn't SUVs any more that are the culprit of where we are today with our dependency on foreign oil. SUVs are getting better and better mileage with each generation, I believe the average MPG for an SUV is about 21; what's the average MPG for a car? Probably about 25. There's some disparity there, but not enough to really site SUVs as the culprit of the evil OPEC and our relentless need for more more more foreign oil and supreme rule over the universe (as long as it's got something we want though, right?).

The culprit is us - we as a nation "elect" officials who are bought by big oil and corporate lobbyists looking out for their own selfish needs. The Good Ole' U.S. of A. has got the best damn government money can buy. And this is where it's gotten us.

I personally believe one part of the solution lies in alleviating our dependency on foreign oil by research and development of alternative energy sources, including for our automobiles. Why hasn't there been more done for the hydrogen fuel cell? Why is it even a QUESTION that Congress should enact legislation to require the average MPG for cars be 35? Why aren't ALL new cars hybrids? If Congress can enact a bill to switch our damn televisions over from analog to digital AND subsidize households with two $40 off vouchers for the converter boxes for the 10% left who DON'T have cable or Sattelite TV, why can't Congress require ALL motor vehicles (maybe not motorcycles) use hybrid technology? I don't give a **** about Halliburton or the likes and what they stand to lose if this were to happen!

Sorry so long winded... I just really think this particular issue is indicative of a much greater problem out there.

Because it's about how SUVs suck in part because they use so much gas.

Huh? confused.gif

Is that intended for me for what I said about SUVs sucking because of the gas mileage? I started out defending SUVs earlier in this thread, and if you read the above novel I wrote kindasad.gif you'd see that I wrote about how SUVs get just barely less mileage than the average car does.

No it wasn't directly at you but there are people who hate a type of car because of gas mileage alone...which is pretty narrow minded given some CARS dont get any better than 12-18 mpg

I'm kinda with Shogunkid. If someone wants to spend a lot of money on gas, why not let them? You want to spend less on gas, go for it.

If its morally wrong to use more gas, then all of us on this forum would be guilty- there are cars that get a lot better gas mileage than celicas do, and I think we would certainly have to shut down any talk about modifying them to get more power. Also- meets are out of the question, thats a useless waste of oil.

So all you whiners complaining about other people using up your precious gas- as soon at you buy a geo-metro, never go for fun drives, and always use a bicycle around town, maybe I'll listen to what you have to say. Otherwise, you're imposing a double standard based on some illogical left-field ideas.

Are there people who drive SUV's who are jerks? Yes. Should some of them learn to not use compact spaces? Of course! Do we all wish those who ride our bumpers would back off at night before our eyes are totally ruined? Totally. But is that because they drive an SUV or is it just because some people are jerks?

Any argument along those lines is based on a per accidens property, nothing per se wrong.

Give me an argument that morally disqualifies SUV's and maybe I'll listen.

Until then, I'll keep going on the occasional pleasure drive, driving my less than fuel efficient celica, and driving, perhaps a couple miles an hour too fast- because I like to, and I'm willing to pay the extra fuel costs.

Then sell your celi, donate the money to some environmental agency, and buy a geo metro. Those things get like twice the gas mileage that celi's do.

If you don't do that, then you too are one of those people concerned only with yourself, right?

I really don't see how we can be pointing fingers at SUV owners on this site. This is a car enthusiast site- we're all about using fuel for fun.

Our degree or "guilt" might vary from person to person on this site, but if it is morally wrong to waste gas, then we are all guilty.

If we're not guilty, then it must be the case that it is not morally wrong to waste gas.

And thus, the horns of dilemma. We're guilty, or, its not wrong to waste gas.

Pick your poison, but you can't have your cake and eat it too on this issue.

In SUV's defense....

1) the new 2008 ford escape hybrid gets up to 34 MPG on city driving

http://www.fordvehicles.com/suvs/2008escapehybrid/

2) i too am guilty of gas guzzling. my sky redline gets 18 mpg on average, pretty bad for a 4 banger. but it does go to 60 in less than 5 seconds. wink.gif

i dont think this thread was aimed at the gasoline issue. rather the small percentage of drivers out there who use their vehicle as an excuse to think that they own the road. sometimes its uncanny the similarities between a vehicle's size and the driver's ego but one needs to remember its only a fraction of the total amount of suv drivers, which are decent drivers.

this forum was not about attacking each other. It was just about the fact that I did not like the big cars. If you need to have one and seriously justify it, then you deserve to. BUt if you are all about I want the big car then that is pathetic. I celica might not get the best gas mileage but it certainly gets more than any suv. Many people on this country are all about the bigger the better and to be honest, it annoys me. My family has all toyotas because ther're good cars. Number one in the world.

Well then I suppose since I don't need a benz or a bmw then I guess I don't deserve it. And many here dont deserve the 3sgte swap.

why is that pathetic? if u want a big car...get one...i see little, tiny cars that drive just as aggressively as some SUVs. It is everybodys god given right to drive whatever they please.

So are you saying that everybody in the world should just buy a Toyota? If you can afford to spend 60-70 dollars on gas, then who cares? U have no right to bash people just because he/she WANTS to drive an SUV. If this is the case, then bash people with muscle cars, and Vettes. 350Zs, GTO's, G35 Coupes cuz i know they get as much gas mileage as most SUVs. The same people complaining about gas guzzling SUVs are the same people that dream of owning Zs, Supras, and G35s so ur full of it !!!
But of course now we all know that you guys would never jump on a chance of owning any of these cars cuz it eats up gas. If your argument is about gas u have no case.

Lets say you make 100,000 a year, doing whatever u do. Ur to tell me that u wouldnt buy a luxury vehicle of any sort? U wouldnt spend the money on a Lex, Bimmer or Benz cuz it guzzles gas? If you say u wouldnt, ur full of sht. If u can afford it, u would in a heartbeat.

Actually if I made 100k a year I'd still drive my celi but I'd put the 4A in it. I'd probably also own the TRD FJ Cruiser. Cuz well, I've got a beach 20 minutes away. Mmm dune drifting.

this forum was not about attacking each other.

I'm with you on that one, I feel like everybody is brainswashed, I see people buying LCD TV they can't afford and it's the large ones too cause they hate on the smaller ones. People get supra and automatically people ask if they are turbo, if not they get that feelling that's its a POS. I got the same treatment with my WRX, people ask if it's an STI and I say no and it seems I got the turd model...WHAT ONLY 227 HP?

Probably anyone who looked through youtube, autoblog and streetfire comments section probably noticed that is completely filled with freaking "My car is better than that, faster, this is ****, my uncle's niece's defunct brother had a '70 camaro 16 years ago that would destroy the new skyline ,etc.", I sincerely hope most of those comment are made by teenagers, because damn, this is a sad world. We live in a world that people do what they want because they can not because they need.

People can buy what they want, only when you drive like **** your 80 000$ SUV, you look more retarded than the guy that parks his blazer against the lightpole.

You mistake me for a materialist. And I understand where you would get that, seeing as how I'm in America and all. But believe me when I say this, I love my celica. I've driven a lot of cars and some of them are very sexy. But nothing compares. I would want him a little faster, sure. Thus the swap. But no, I'd have my weekend toy and my DD would be Tom.

If I made 100k a year I'd still have my Celi, it'd just be a lot nicer. For example, it'd have that damn brake job and suspension I'm in dire need of. I'd replace the timing belt, and upgrade the exhaust so it'd not only drive a little nicer, it'd get better gas mileage too. And I'd probably have another car to drive just for winter, like a nice little AWD sedan number. I don't think I'd get an SUV again though, not until the Hybrids get better gas mileage.

Well it's not coming from here... just because I made 100k a year doesn't mean I'd go out and buy the first BMW or benz I could. (in fact, I'd never drive a Mercedes anyway, I really don't like them). I can think of other stuff I'd MUCH rather spend my hard earned money on, like having a kid finally and buying a house and building a killer retirement. It's about being able to afford the life you want to build for yourself, not about being all showy and flashy and ****. I genuinely like my car, even though it's slow as hell! I'd just be grateful that I was fortunate enough to make my car the way I really want it to be!

Now if, of course, the life you want to build for yourself includes a benz or whatever and flashy stuff to let everyone know that you make 100k a year, more power to ya. (not that 100k a year even goes all that far these days anyway) That's just not my style is all I'm saying.

They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but I still wouldn't trade my celi for any of them.

Good for you, I think that's awesome. You're an exception for your age. And there's nothing wrong with driving a benz and/or a BMW, I'm just saying I personally wouldn't drive a benz because I think they're flashy and austentatious and all about being status symbols. I just generally don't really think they're all that nice looking, either. Just an opinion. Now gimme a 3 series beemer, that I could get on board with. But it still wouldn't be my first choice car if I could afford any car I wanted.

You kinda seem to be riding my ass, do I just hit you wrong or something?

dang people... i make more than the said 100k a year and i still roll the celica everyday, and it doesnt have a 3s in it yet, and i am still concerned about gas, but geez... stereo types are horrible, i dont know why im even typing here but you guys need to calm down. one person's opinion is theirs, if you agree fine, if not oh well. if/when you can afford nice things it is nice and more power to you to pursue your dreams.

as for people who get stuff they cant afford for bragging rights, the country is full of them... credit cards anyone?????? im not concerned with the "national statistics" but from what i see, only about 30% of people in the US are on top of their finances as they should be, not late, paying as they should, the rest just bit off more than they can chew, some alot more than others.

as far as the argument that suv's and this car sucks and this car is better, i agree to a point. my tastes suit me differently than they suit another person.

---imagine the dumbest person you know, im talking the absolute dumbasses, no common sense, no book smart... and consider that they are just a little above the "average" american... so figure that all the smart and "normal" people out there above average as is the "dumb" person, theres just as many people who are below average and well well well below average out there that most people are oblivious to. these are the people that you only see in passing and have no clue about them, unless of course you work in customer service and then you only get to see about 20% of these individuals.

however streetfire and myspace and all the others seem to be crawling with them and their comments

unfortunatly i see 6gc succuming to them more and more over the years since i used to lurk on here like 4 years ago.

please stop these threads before it gets totally out of hand

and forkee is awesome with that gif hahaha laugh.gif

i hate to break it to u guys but a Celica is not as great of a car as u make it out to be. It's a great car but u guys make it out to be the best car in the world which is furthest from the truth.

Dude then what the hell are you doing on here. I don't know if you looked before you posted but this is a Celica Forum. Its called 6GCCelica Forum. So that would lead a reader to believe that their are people that love this car on here and, furthering that logic, that these people would love these cars and think of them very highly. So let me alleviate any further confusion. To many of us, these cars are Wonderful cars. Maybe not the best sure, but that's not the point. If you don't like the hype that some people give these cars, then heres food for thought. Think about your Favorite car, make sure though that you think real hard about it because we don't want to make this mistake again, go find a Forum that is all about that car and post on it.

Not trying to be a dick. But some of use love the hell out of these cars, and YES! Would continue to own it, and drive it, even if we had all the money in the world. Believe it or not, i don't care. but its true.

And as far as the argument goes. SUVs and Trucks,to use them as a daily drivers is stupid and here is why.

1. They use a lot of gas no matter how you slice it, therefore making the need for gas higher, therefore making gas prices rise ,thus effecting everyone in the US because big cars are more so in America then anywhere else, grant you that's not the only reason they rise and you can also include cars like Mustangs but mostly SUVs and Trucks, but it helps. the bigger the demand the higher the price, and before you argue that, think about how many people drive big Vehicles, then realize thats just a fraction of the actual number. when you look at it that way it becomes a factor in gas prices. Thus effecting everyone.

2. They are big. Big cars are harder to drive. and i don't care what kinda of things are done to make it stable, you get it going and it will go. My Ex girlfriend roller her 2001 Ford Expedition because she was going the speed limit around a turn and had to turn sharply to avoid hitting a stalled car. at the time it was a new car. I'm sure that they have made some advances since then but not that much. Also,Personal choice should end if you are 5'5 and drive a HUMMER. Your to small. and even if you can see over the wheel, there should be a Driving class like 18Wheeler drivers have to take to learn on how to drive them. Because most people don't know how.

If you need it. Fine. drive it. its worth the issues they come with. But otherwise i don't believe they should be a daily driver, because of these reasons. but that's just me.

Actually I take it back. When I'm rich my daily driver is going to be a Hummer towing a 30' yacht.

I have not read all or the post nor do i care to but i figured there are a lot of replies so i might as well. I have a lifted 95 jeep grand Cherokee, my celica, and an 01 Tahoe. drive the tahoe in the winter, celica in the summer and the jeep whenever i feel like. What bothers me the most is when somebody voices their opinion, then fails to leave it at that, we all have opinions, don't try to tell me im wrong or that you are better, or this or that,we are who we are life is to short to bicker. enjoy yourself

It's called freedom..freedom of choice, something my south neighbors seems to be very proud of.

if its about freedom of choice than they are making a poor decision. when your choice uses up all the gas like 20 years sooner its going to be problem. You go to europe and seeing an suv is really unusual because the people there get it. Gas is about 6 dollars a gallon so they all drive smart cars and it seems like a good use of freedom. Americans on the whole care more bout what the car looks like than the efficiency of it.

Run out of gas??? Gas is one of the most abundant resources in the world. It'll take a lot to run out of gas and oil. Will we ever run out of gas? Eventually but not anytime within the century most likely and not anytime soon. Gas prices are not going up because we're running out of gas.

Dam right. You live once...people can get whatever they want. If the DRIVER is a douche, then thats a different story. But there are bad drivers that own sports cars, minivans, SUVS, luxury cars and yes people...even Toyotas kindasad.gif

I don't know about running out of oil, but the ways they're mining it in the Canada right now..which is by the way the biggest source of oil of the United States, theres a HUGE amount of energy wasted to extract the oil, almost to the point you'd wonder why they'd go through the whole process. Put it however you want, theres going to be a problem sometime !

Actually I take it back. When I'm rich my daily driver is going to be a Hummer towing a 30' yacht.

In the interest of solidarity and my newfound marriage to Panda, I take it back too. When I'm rich, I'm gonna drive a Freightliner so I can haul our Hummer that's towing our 30' yacht. The Hummer should just drive back and forth in fwd and reverse inside the trailer.

The Freightliner will be named Marge (of course), the Hummer will be named Dan and the yacht will be called Ch. Gold Mine Ruby's Most Glorious and Fabulous Snap in a Z Formation Royal Sparkle* but will be called Pat for short.

(*The asterisk does not stand for anything; it is simply an arbitrary part of the registered name.)

I'll take it under advisement.

Some people should consider cultivating a sense of humor and sarcasm.
